I think I caught the crochet bug this week because I have been working on a lot of new patterns as well as using yarn for some other crafty projects (soon to be posted!). And don’t forget about my crocheted Valenine’s Hat GIVEAWAY!
I’ve been dying to to make a brimmed hat for awhile now, and finally came across a great pattern from Vallieskids blog. She actually has two different patterns for brimmed hats. One for babies and one for children and luckily both fit my boys! Although I prefer the one for babies because it uses a Half Double Crochet (HDC) rather than a Double Crochet (DC), making it a tighter, thicker hat. Here is the link to the Brimmed Hat for Baby and for the Brimmed Hat for Kids.
I used Organic Elements 1″ wood buttons and Vanna’s Choice Gray Marble yarn on both hats.
My friend and photographer Shannon of Shannon Erickson Photography took these cute photos of my boys wearing their brimmed hats.

How do you keep the brim from flopping?
Kristin Williams says
You can double the brim or add the few outer rows of a round piece of plastic canvas to the edge by stitching over it.

I made the little newsboy hat for my boy, from the vallieskids child pattern. I had a similar problem with a very floppy, almost ruffly, brim. I solved the problem by removing every other increase on the two rounds the brim. Also, after the first round I fastened off and started at the beginning so I'd have the rs facing. After I did the sc all the way around it pulled together very nicely.

You could also use a pipe cleaner around the last round to make the edge sturdy!

I've tried. Asking this a number of times and it's coming up about 2-3 inches too short. I would need to add about 6+ rows to make it work for my 6 month old. I've tried changing hooks to loosen my tension and it still didn't work. Thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?? Help!!

I tried this pattern for the kids and it is WAY to big…wondering what I did wrong.
