Thinking of putting together a handmade Halloween costume this year? How about Waldo from the “Where’s Waldo” books?! If you know how to crochet, this would make a great DIY costume!
First search through your kids closets for a red and white striped shirt and blue jeans. Think about their Christmas clothes and pajamas. You will most likey find a lot of red and white in there.
You will also need Waldo’s glasses. Right now Wendy’s has a 2-pack of Where’s Waldo frames in their kids meals. We currently have 4 pairs! They are in our dress up bin and will be great for play throughout the year. They would also make perfect Harry Potter glasses. So grab them while they are still available in stores!
Now for the hat pattern.
You will need to know how to make a Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC) and a Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC). I have finally made my first video tutorial and will show you how to make the Front and Back Post Half Double Crochet! (next time I promise I won’t use my camera phone and will take the video in better lighting)
Waldo Crochet Hat Pattern
Size: approx. 2 – 4 years… it fits both my 1.5 and 3.5 year old.
Materials:
White and Red yarn (I used Vanna’s Choice brand for both colors)
Size H Hook
Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
Sl St = Slip Stitch
HDC = Half Double Crochet
FPHDC = Front Post Half Double Crochet
BPHDC = Back Post Half Double Crochet
With white yarn…
Magic Ring, 8 HDC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 HDC in each around, join, chain 1 (16 HDC)
Round 3: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1(24 HDC)
Round 4: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (32 HDC)
Round 5: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 HDC)
Round 6: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1 (48 HDC)
Round 7: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 5, repeat around, join, chain 1 (56 HDC)
Round 8: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 13, repeat around, join, chain 1 (60 HDC)
Round 9 – 16: HDC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (60 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
To make an extra large pom pom:
Note: Use red yarn, not blue. This tutorial was taken from my Thing 1 and Thing 2 hats which use the same size pom pom.
1. Cut out two cardboard circles that are approx. 4.5″ wide (I traced the lid to a sour cream container). Then cut a smaller circle in the middle of each one that are approx. 1.5″ wide.
2. Lay the two cardboard donuts on top of each other and start wrapping your yarn through the small hole and around your donuts. You will have to use multiple small balls of yarn. Don’t worry about connecting your yarn ends. Just make sure when you start and stop a new strand, the loose end is sticking out the edge of the donut and not in the middle.
3. Cut the edge of the yarn between cardboard donuts.
4. This is what your yarn should look like.
5. Slightly separate the cardboard pieces and tie a piece of yarn TIGHTLY around the middle.
6. Remove the cardboard completely and trim pom pom until all the strands look nice and neat and attach to the top of your hat!
There you have it! Your costume is ready to be worn! And this is one Waldo that won’t be hard to find 🙂

when I saw this I just giggled! I did this costume a few years ago for my old sisters. Although they are adults; they are twins so I made one real waldo and then we had a fake. When they walked around people had to try and remember which hat was the real waldo! lol.

I made this in Blue and yellow, our local hurling teams colours. I made them large for adults just by increasing the hook size and using chunky yarn.

I use the same cardboard technique to make my pom poms. But I did notice that you have solid circles. I made a small cut to the center and a small v in it. This way you can wrap the yarn around without having to go through the center everytime. I love all your patterns and thought that maybe I could give you some help instead of you helping me all the time with what am I going to do now.
