I had the pleasure of receiving some fun yarn in the mail recently. Red Heart graciously sent me one of their new lines called Boutique Sassy Fabric Yarn. I received a hank of the red dot pattern and immediately thought of one thing: Minnie Mouse! You may have already seen my Mickey and Minnie Mouse inspired crocheted hats (and diaper covers), but I thought a tutu skirt would be a cute twist on the Minnie outfit. I will show you how to make a removable bow as well!
Here is what you need:
– Red Heart Super Save Yarn in red and black
– Size H Crochet hook
– Large tapestry needle
– 3-5 small buttons (about a half inch)
– Hot glue gun and alligator clip if you want to make the bow
Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
You probably want to start by measuring the waist of your child to see how long you need to make your chain. My daughter was sleeping when I started this project so I guesstimated. I think you could pretty easily increase the pattern below in multiples of 10 to start with.
Here is how to make a 3-6 month size tutu:
Chain 60 +2, HDC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down. (60 HDC)
Rows 2-6: HDC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (60 HDC)
Row 7: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 9, repeat across, chain 1, turn
Row 8: HDC in each stitch across, chain 1 , turn
Row 9: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 10, repeat across, chain 1, turn
Row 10: HDC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Feel free to stop or keep increasing to make tutu skirt flare out.
Row 11: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 11, repeat across, chain 1, turn
Row 12: HDC in each stitch across
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Now you need to attach your sassy fabric. Lay it down so the holes in the fabric are facing up.
Insert your hook into the first hole of the fabric and under one of the stitch loops on the left hand side of your skirt, about halfway down.
Now insert your hook under another hole in the sassy fabric and draw through the crochet loop and your first sassy fabric hole.
Continue across the whole skirt.
You are going to want to make 3 or more rows of this (depending on how long your tutu is)
To weave in ends, you want to use your tapestry needle and knot it around the last stitch and trim end. Basically just do what you can to make it secure.
Sew on a couple of buttons on one of the edges of your tutu skirt. Make sure your buttons are small enough for the HDC’s on the other side to loop over them.
Now you can make a matching bow!
Overlap your fabric a couple of times… it should be a bout 4-5 inches long. Cut another strip of fabric (this will be the middle of your bow).
Pinch bow in the middle and secure with a pipe cleaner or a small rubber band.
Fold the edges of your second strip over and hot glue it around the middle of your bow. Trim.
Add an alligator clip to the back and clip it onto the top of your Minnie hat between the ears!

Very cute 🙂 I did this with sashay yarn. I'm not sure how easy it was to crochet that between the stitches but you might try making the skirt in the back loops and adding your fabric to the front loops. 🙂 just an idea. Love all your projects!

Jajaja! How funny! I have to tell you that I've followed the patterns you published sometime ago for the hat and the diaper cover. I'm going to publish the results in a few weeks. I'm pregnant now of my first child, I don't know anything about sizes of babies, so I hope it fits him…
Thank you for teaching us.
