When your daughter has a watermelon bathing suit, the only sensible thing to do is to crochet a matching watermelon sun hat! This hat is really easy to make and works up quickly using double crochet stitches. And I will show you how to make simple “seeds” using large pony beads!
Materials:
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Worsted weight yarn in red, white and green. Of course you could also make this hat with any color combinations!
– Large black pony beads from craftprojectideas.com.
– Tapestry needle

I stitched on my pony beads before starting my brim but you can do this at any point.
With an long strand of red yarn and your tapestry needle, you are going to space the black pony beads 3 double crochets apart and weave your strand of yarn through the middle of the bead AND the double crochets that are flanking the bead. Do one at a time. You can randomly scatter them around the red part of the hat or just do one row as I did.
The watermelon bikini pictured is a hand-me-down (Old Navy brand) but you can get your own watermelon swimsuit on Amazon (If she didn’t have the bikini already I would totally buy the first one!)

Im confused a little in the smaller patterns it says to switch to white and sc then switch to green and dc again but in the bigger patterns it says sc but in parenthesis it says dc at the end of each sentence????

Wow, I really botched this when I typed it up 😐 I think I have it corrected now. You will want to SC the white round and DC the green brim. So sorry for the confusion!

Omg so cute so making this for my little girl tomorrow.
Love your patterns I find they are perfect size every time. know your basic pattern off the top of my head now made so many. the brim on this hat is fantastic.
Have noticed it says switch to green and 2 SC in each stich but your stich count at the end of the round is the same as the round before am I being really dippy by thinking it should be doubled
[email protected] says
Ack! Yes you are correct! That is what I get for copy and pasting stitch counts 🙁 All is fixed now. Thanks for catching that!
Joni Bridgman says

Would it be ok to use cotton yarn? It is so hot in thhe summer that it may be better if I used cotton. If so what brand would be good and would pattern remain the same. Tyvm for sharing so much with us. I love your patterns and have made many for my grandchildren. I hope it is ok that I sk youabout the yarn.
Lauren Blanchette Rankin says
I'm planning on using cotton yarn too. I really like Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton yarn. It's really soft and easy to work with. I'm going out to buy the red today. It's worsted weight so I'd think it should be fine. I'll let you know how it comes out!

Too cute. What about weaving in a black ribbon instead of the beads then you have a cute bow in the back. Just a thought

Love this hat! Is the first dc in the ch 2 stitch? I keep not getting the right stitch count for the 0-3 hat.
Jessica Edwards says
All your patterns are so cute! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing!!
The only issue I have is I'm not sure of your gauge.
One hat I pulled too tight making it too small and another too loose making it too big!!

Is there a good alternative for the beads? I have a picky 2yo granddaughter who will say it hurts lol. Also, the toddler/preschool size… Since she’s just 2, should I only do 4 or 5 rounds of DC instead of 6? I’m fairly new to crochet. Thanks
Yvonne says
I love your patterns & creativity! Please keep posting & I’ll keep following! I made this for my granddaughter!
Thank you!

I am going to make the melon hat in crochet thread in the 9-12 mos. but no gauge is given. Could you please inform me what the gauge should be. Thank You

I just crocheted 0-3 instructions using worsted 100% cotton yarn and an “H” hook. It came out big enough for a 1 year old. I thought “H” hook sounded really big. A swatch test would be really helpful or a circumference after round 2 even. Did I use the wrong hook size. Thanks
Judy
Laura M Paintner says
I made the child size twice and both came out big enough for a large adult. I used worsted weight acrylic and an H hook. Is there a missing hook change? Chart for hook sizes would be wonderful.
