This Crochet Monkey Hat was made almost 3.5 years ago!! You see the little baby in the photo below? Yep, that is my sweet Zoe! Just for reference, she is going to be 4 years old this summer 🙂 I’ve been so incredibly anxious to share this pattern with you. The delay was because this project was originally supposed to be part of a crochet kit but unfortunately the kit never was published (you can read more about that HERE). But the good news is that I can now share it right here for free on my blog!
Materials:
- Size H Crochet Hook
- Worsted Weight Yarn in Beige and Dark Brown (about one skein of each). I recommend Bernat Super Value in Taupe or Chocolate for the dark brown and Natural for the beige color. You will also need a small amount of black for the nose and smile. Shop all colors at Yarnspirations.com
- 2 black buttons 1/2 – 1” wide
- Tapestry Needle
Stitches Used:
Ch = Chain
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
Gauge:
4″ across = 14 double crochet stitches
4″ height = 8 rows of double crochets
Hat Pattern:
Note: You will notice I don’t use the magic ring or my usual hat stitch counts because this project was made uniquely for a book that was to be published. Don’t worry, it still turns out the same as my other hats! But if you are familiar with my usual basic hat patterns feel free to follow THIS PATTERN for the hat portion instead.

TIP: Go up a hook size (or two) to make a bigger face appliqué. Using a thicker yarn or doubling the yarn would make it much larger too.
Using black yarn and your tapestry needle, stitch a on a smile and small circle for the nose. Attach button eyes at this point as well.
Sew face onto hat by weaving tapestry needle in and out under the top of the last crochet stitch made.
Monkey Ears (Make 2):
Starting with beige colored yarn
Chain 2, make 6 HDC in second chain from hook, join to first HDC, ch 1 (6 HDC)
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around, join (12 HDC)
Change to dark brown yarn
Round 3: ch 1, make *2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next, repeat from * around (18 HDC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, (18 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew ear onto side of hat.
Attach ears 4-5 rows from the bottom of the hat. Lay hat flat and use tapestry needle to sew the ear along the stitches where hat creases.
Weave in any loose ends and you have now completed your Silly Smiling Monkey Hat! He reminds me a bit of Curious George don’t you think?!

I’m working on one of these now. It is SO cute!! Thank you for sharing it. <3
I just want to point out that the hat pattern for newborn (row 3-9) and 0-3 months (row 4-10) might be a little confusing for newbies.
{ DC in each stitch around, join, ch 2 } should be added to each pattern.

Thank you for pointing this out. I’m not new to crocheting, but new to reading patterns, and this really helped! I kept messing up by repeating the whole pattern line. Now with some clarification I was able to fix my mistakes.

For the 0-3 month size, we are supposed to increase every row for 4-10 as it says??? Or is this a mistake and just 4 is an increase and the rest 1 D.C. In each through row 10? That’s what I’m guessing it should be.
Thanks for the adorable pattern!
