I’m starting to feel those Fall vibes and decided to play around with the Red Heart All-in-One Granny Square Yarn again! I had a skein of Warm Wheat and it is the perfect colorway for autumn.
I discovered that two granny squares stitched together can become a pumpkin! Unfortunately I don’t like how you can see the polyfil through the stitches. I was trying to keep the basic pattern that comes with this All-in-One Granny Square yarn and thanks to my Facebook and Instagram community, I think we have some polyfil stuffing solutions!
But first lets go over the pattern and talk about this yarn! Red Heart All-in-One Granny Square yarn lets you keep stitchin’ with no color switchin’ because it’s made with pre-set color changes that allows you to make a perfect granny square! And you can make 14 squares with just one ball! That means you can make 7 pumpkins from a single skein of this yarn.
Materials:
– Red Heart All in One Granny Square Yarn in color Warm Wheat

– Size H Crochet Hook
– Polyfil Fiber Stuffing
– Small bit of brown yarn for the stem (scrap yarn works great!)
– Tapestry Needle
The basic granny square pattern is on the back of the label on each ball and Yarnspirations also has a helpful video tutorial RIGHT HERE for you to follow.
Now for this particular project, I made two slight changes to the last round of the granny square.
In the middle stitch of each side of the last round, I made a slip stitch instead of 3 double crochets. This gives a little dip in each of the 4 sides that help the two squares fit together. It also gives you extra length to the tail of the last color when you fasten off, which you need to stitch the two squares together.
Next, I made 6 DC in each corner. I did not include the chain 2 in the corners of the last round.
Place the two squares on top of each other so the corners of one square fit into the dips of the other.
Start stitching together with the remaining tails of yarn and your tapestry needle.
I stuffed mine with polyfil but I don’t like how you can see the polyfil through the granny square. Many of you have made some great suggestions!
– Use a nylon stocking around the polyfil so it stays intact.
– Use a felt lining or fabric on the backside of the granny squares so there are no spaces or holes.
– Create a solid granny square (which may not work well with the pre-set color changes of this yarn).
– Stitch the granny squares over a craft pumpkin from Michaels or any store selling Halloween/Fall decor.
– Create a solid crochet piece for the backside of each square before you stitch them together.
I haven’t tried any of these BUT I did order THESE clear inflatable 6 inch balls (affiliate link) and my idea is to make Fall Baubles!
Now if you are still making the pumpkin pictured and using polyfil, you will want to create a stem.
Pumpkin Stem:
Using a bit of brown scrap yarn,
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 5 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2-6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Fasten off after round 6 leaving long tail.
Stitch stem onto middle top of pumpkin, as you are stitch it on, weave your tail through the middle of the pumpkin, straight down through the bottom and pull to squish it inward so it creates a pumpkin shape instead of a round circle.
I will update you with how the baubles turn out once I receive the clear plastic balls!
