Pizza Cookies

February 6, 2014

It’s that time of year again when I start to plan my boys birthday party! Big brother is turning 5 and little brother is turning 3 at the end of March and since their birthdays are only 3 days apart I’ve been throwing them joint birthday parties. Although I have a feeling I will only be able to get away with this for one more year… I think big brother may insist on his own birthday party next year 🙂

This year we are going to have a Pizza Party themed birthday at one of their favorite local pizza restaurants (which has a huge kids play area!). So even though the restaurant is going to take care of a lot of the details, I still want to add my crafty touches to the party to make it extra special. I was working on some pizza-themed decor when I suddenly had an ah-ha moment! The Nilla Wafers that little brother was snacking on would make perfect little pizza cookies! PERFECT for cupcake toppers! And they are so incredibly simple to make. This was my “test run” before the big day.
All you need are a box of Nilla Wafers, a red food color pen,
white cake icing (Betty Crocker Decorating Cake Icing), and mini red M&M’s.
First cut your Nilla Wafers into a triangle slice.
A bread knife will easily cut through them (you want to saw it instead of pressing straight down).
Now take your red food color pen (unfortunately mine was just about to run out) and color the “sauce” onto the back and edges of the cookie slice. No need to fill in the middle. As you can see I also attempted to make a whole pizza pie cookie but I didn’t like the way it turned out so just ignore that one.
Now squeeze your icing (using the small round tip) onto the cookie for the “cheese.” Add a couple of red mini M&M’s for the “pepperoni” and you are done! You could also use round red sprinkles or any other small round red candy you can think of that would work.
That’s it! I think these would make cute little finger food treats but they really make the most perfect cupcake toppers! I got the cupcake “pizza party” picks from Oriental Trading – .89 cents for 25 of them! And the cups are also from Oriental Trading – .89 cents for a dozen.
These would also be fun for a Ninja Turtles party or make them just because they are so cute and easy 🙂
