Crochet Cupcake

March 25, 2015

It’s a big birthday week here in our house! Big brother turns 6 and little brother turns 4. It’s also my brothers birthday as well! My mom and I both gave birth to baby boys on March 24th, 28 years apart 🙂 How cool is that?! Is it silly to hope that someday Zoe also has a March 24th baby?! We’ve been celebrating with a lot of cake and donuts and I suddenly felt like I need a no-calorie version. This crochet cupcake is going to be perfect for play tea parties and will make a nice addition to the kids little play kitchen. I plan on making a dozen! And if you like this little cupcake you might also like my little crochet cupcake keychains and my crochet cupcake hat!

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn in white, brown, red, and little multi-colored yarn scraps for the sprinkles. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice the for the whole cupcake.
– Size G Crochet hook (although you could use a larger hook!)
– Tapestry needle
– Poly-fil stuffing (optional)

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
French Knot Tutorial

Finished cupcake is about 3.5 x 3.5 inches

Cupcake Pattern:
Starting with white yarn..
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, pull tight and join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 5-6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Work in front loops only for Round 7
Round 7: In front loops: in next stitch make 3 HDC, slip stitch in next, *3 HDC, slip stitch, repeat from * around, join, fasten off and weave in ends. You have now made 12 scallops.
Now working in the back loops from Round 7, attach brown yarn and chain 1
Round 8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
NOTE: At this point you will want to attach your sprinkles and cherry
Round 9-12: working in both loops, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 13: working in back loops only, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 14: working in both loops again, SC Decrease, SC, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 15: SC decrease until closed!

Be sure to stuff with poly-fil before completely closing cupcake. I actually used all of my long yarn ends to stuff it. After weaving in your ends, there is not need to trim them. They make great stuffing!

Cherry pattern:
With red yarn
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 4 SC in ring, pull tight and join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 4: SC decrease until closed
Use loose ends to stuff and sew onto top of cupcake

Sprinkles:
Make sprinkles using a french knot. I think THIS TUTORIAL explains it well.

This is brilliant and such a sweet little item to pop in with a gift. I can see this as a pincushion or filled with lavender too. Thanks for the tutorial

Thank you for sharing the pattern – it is adorable! I am not great reading patterns (I usually select projects that have youtube videos, it is just easier for me since I am a new crocheter) but I really want to give this one a try. It's so cute!!

That's so sweet, and looks just good enough to eat! Happy Birthday to all your birthday peeps, and enjoy the celebrations. My mama and grandmama also gave birth on the same day, with 39 years between my uncle & me – we always shared a special bond 🙂
