It feels like summer! I found these yummy colors that remind me of sherbet ice cream in the Red Heart with Love line of yarn and couldn’t wait to make something summer-y with them. With the popularity of the granny shorts I (somewhat jokingly) make my Husband a few years ago, I thought I would use the same stitch to make something for the ladies. I am going to work on multiple sizes but for now I just have this child size version and will add some notes about increasing stitches until I have the adult version posted.
Zoe wears a girls size 8 and this top fits her perfectly. She actually has some room to grow. It’s made to be a crop top (although you could definitely make it longer). The yarn has stretch so I’m sure this could fit a variety of kids.
Materials:
Red Heart with Love Yarn in colors: Bubblegum, Blushing Peach, Minty, and Blush (this is the name of the purple color). You will only need one skein of each.

– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
Size: The dimensions when laid flat are 13 inches wide x 9 inches tall (not including straps)
Crochet Granny Stitch Tank Top Pattern:
starting with bubblegum pink
Chain 75 and join to first chain to make a circle, chain 3 + 2 DC all in first chain (this makes you first granny stitch cluster), skip two stitches, 3 DC in next, skip two stitches, 3 DC in next, repeat around and join to your first stitch (the top of the chain 3). You should have 25 granny stitch clusters
Row 2: join in peach yarn to the first space between the granny clusters and make a chain 3 + 2 DC, make 3 DC in the next space, and repeat around making 3 DC in all the spaces, join to the first chain 3 stitch.
Row 3: join in minty green yarn and repeat row 2
Row 4: join in purple yarn and repeat row 2
Row 5-8: repeat row 2 alternating the colors (pink, peach, minty, purple)
Feel free to continue alternating rows of color to make tank top longer.
Row 9: Lay your piece flat. You will want to make 10 granny stitch clusters along the front with pink yarn (still working in those spaces between the granny clusters from previous row), fasten off.
Row 10: now with peach, join in the first space between the stitches from previous row (working right to left works best). Make 9 granny stitch clusters, fasten off.
Row 11: with minty minty yarn, join in the first space and make 8 granny stitch clusters, fasten off.
Row 12: with purple, join the first space and make 7 granny stitch clusters, fasten off.
Row 13: with pink join in the first space and make 6 granny stitch clusters, fasten off.
Now turn the top over and do the same on the backside, repeating rows 9-13 but you will start with 11 granny stitch clusters and go down from there. You should have 3 granny stitch clusters on either side of the top that will be the armpits.
Weave in ends!
Now lets make the straps:
Starting at the top corner of the front of the top, join in pink and SC along armpit of top, when you get around the armpit and to the top corner of the back of the top, chain 30 and join to the top corner where you started. fasten off.
Do this on the other top corners/armpit area of the tank.
It should now look like the picture below:
Now for the ribbing! I am using a really easy technique by Daisy Farm Crafts called the Back Loop Single Crochet Ribbed Border. I LOVE the way she does this ribbing on her blankets because it works right along the edge and you don’t need to sew any pieces together. Below is a very easy video tutorial for the DFC YouTube Page. Although she is showing you how to do it on a blanket, you apply the same technique to the edges of this tank top! For the bottom of the tank top I attached my pink yarn and did the exact same stitch count as Tiffany from Daisy Farm Crafts. So the ribbing along the bottom is a total of 7 SC long. For the top of the tank top, I joined in my pink yarn at the top and made a chain 4 which means my ribbing is 3 SC in length. You will work along the top edges of the tank top and continue along the chain straps. It will be one big circle of ribbing. Do not work ribbing along the armpit spaces.
NOTE: I added on my ribbing after I had finished a few rows of the tank top because I wanted to see if it was going to work before I got too far. So you can go ahead and add yours at the end or whenever you prefer!
I do recommend wearing a sports bra or fitted tank under this top because you can see through the stitches. It is supposed to be light and airy!
So how can we adjust sizing to make this bigger? Well…. you can always go up or down a few hook sizes to adjust size. I believe you can also increase the starting chain count by 25 (multiples of 25)… but then you will have to adjust the number of granny stitch clusters you make when you get to Row 9. I will play around with it and figure out some sizing options for you! Stay tuned!
