N is for Nightingale: Crochet Nightingale Bird Applique

N is for Nightingale
A lot of you had a hard to time figuring this one out. Let me start by saying that there aren’t a lot of options for the letter N. I think my other two choices were Newt or Narwhal… Narwhal would have been fine expect I already have a Unicorn and Whale appliqué so that just seemed to similar. I liked the idea of including a bird in my list of animals so Nightingale was the easy pick. A Nightingale is a small bird best known for its powerful and beautiful song. When I sew this appliqué onto the blanket I plan on stitching some musical notes around it as well. You can read more about the Nightingale HERE.

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used a dark brown and a light brown/cream color for the belly. Not sure what the exact color and yarn brand it was… sorry 🙁 I tried to keep the colors somewhat true to a real nightingale.
– Size G Crochet Hook (the bigger the hook the bigger the appliqué and vice versa)
– Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
Sl St = Slip Stitch
SC =  Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
TC = Triple Crochet

Nightingale Applique Pattern:
Starting with cream color for belly
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 HDC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 3: 2 HDC in first 6, change to brown yarn, HDC +DC in next stitch, chain 5, slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook, SC in next 3, 2 SC over the DC and SC in next 3, HDC in next, Hdc + DC + 6 TC + DC and join to same stitch. Fasten off

Beak: join yellow, chain 3, slip stitch in 2nd ch from hook, SC in next, join to same stitch, chain 2, slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch to join in same stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Wing:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring,do not join, chain 1, turn
Round 2: SC in next 6, SC + HDC in next, DC in last, chain 2. Slip stitch in 2nd ch from hook and continue to SC across top. Fasten off leaving tail to sew onto bird body.

Make a french knot for the eye.
