Deer and Reindeer Crochet Square

Oh DEER, it’s already December! The year flew by and I hope you have enjoyed all this Animal Square Crochet-Along. For our last square in the series we have a Deer or a Reindeer or if you are feeling festive, Rudolph with his red nose! Lots of ways to customize each and every one of these squares.

Over the next week I will show you how to join the squares to make them into a blanket. I plan on using white or a neutral color for the edges and joins. I’m not sure what colors I will use for the border yet. I made two of every animal square and will first crochet each of them together back-to-back. Then I will join them and create a border.

Each month (January through December of 2023) I posted a new Crochet Animal Square.  These are simple crochet squares that are embellished with adorable animal faces! These squares work up quickly and won’t take you more than an hour or two. This project is extremely beginner friendly and you can add more or less embellishments. Customize to your liking!

As I mentioned above, I will be stitching these all together to make a blanket but they could also be turned into a pillow(s), a scarf, or any other creative way you’d like to use them. 

Now let’s make an adorable deer!

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Cafe Latte, Coffee, Buff Beige for the Reindeer (and Cherry Red for Rudolf if you are making his red nose)
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Buff Beige, Aran, and Cafe Latte for the Deer

– Size H Crochet Hook
– Two black safety eyes (oval or round will work) HERE are the oval eyes I used
– Tapestry needle

Deer/Reindeer Square

First let’s make the Square:
With caffe late yarn (reindeer) or buff beige (deer)
Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-23: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
now continue making a SC in the 3 sides (2 Chains in each corner)
join in coffee yarn (reindeer) or cafe latte yarn (deer), fasten off cafe latte or buff beige, SC in each stitch all the way around 4 sides making 2 SC in each corner.

Snout: 
with buff beige (reindeer) or aran (deer) yarn
Chain 12, DC in 3rd chain from hook and in next 8, 3 DC in last chain. Now working on other side of chain, DC in each stitch and make 3 DC in last stitch. Join to first DC, chain 2. (24 DC)
Round 2: (2 DC in first stitch, DC in next stitch), repeat around. (36 DC) 
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail. 

Optional: Stitch on smile using tapestry needle and long strand of yarn.

Antlers (make 2):
with coffee brown (reindeer) or café latte (deer) yarn
Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 3,  turn
Row 2: TC in first stitch, TC + chain 3 and slip stitch to join to second stitch, slip stitch in next 2, chain 2 + DC in next, DC + chain 2 and slip stitch to join to next stitch, slip stitch in remaining stitches.

Ears (make 2):
With Café latte brown (reindeer) or buff beige (deer) yarn
chain 5, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in last two, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first 3, 2 SC in next, SC in last 4, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in first 3, 2 SC in next 3, SC in last 3, fasten off

Stitch ears onto square below antlers

Nose:
with cherry red (Rudolph) or coffee brown (reindeer) or café latte (deer) yarn
magic ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, (16 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Stitch onto middle of square so it overlaps top of snout.
