I is for Iguana: Crochet Iguana Applique

October 10, 2014

Here is Day 9 of my 26 Days of Crochet Animal Alphabet Appliques!
I is for Iguana

This little guy was inspired by my sons Stuffie named Igby the Iguana. Unfortunately there is a little hiccup in the pattern… I didn’t write it down 🙁 Actually I did write it down somewhere on a scratch piece of paper that is now long gone. So I had to re-do the pattern and unfortunately wasn’t able to get it exactly as I had it the first time but it is close!!

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in fern, scarlett red and terracotta orange. and little bit of black for the eye.
– Size G Crochet Hook (the bigger the hook the bigger the appliquĂ© and vice versa)
– Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
French Knot Tutorial
Sl St = Slip Stitch
SC =  Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Iguana Crochet Pattern:
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 10 DC in ring, join, chain 1
Row 2: Make 2 SC in next 3 stitches, chain 1 turn (do not continue around the head)
Row 3: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease
Row 4-5: SC in each stitch across (4 SC)
Row 6: make 2 SC Decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 7-10: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (2 SC)
continue to SC along top of body, when you get to the round head, make 2 SC in each stitch. Now continue along the bottom of iguana body: SC, slip stitch + chain 2 + DC in same stitch, chain 2 and join to next stitch (you have now made one foot), SC in next 3, make another foot (sl st + ch 2 + DC + ch 2 in next), SC in remaining body stitches.
Before fastening off, chain 4, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in next (this makes the tail), join to top of body. fasten off.

Attach red yarn along the top. chain 2, SC in second chain, skip a stitch and slip stitch to join (you have now made one hump), continue to make as many humps as you’d like along top.

With tapestry needle stitch orange yarn along body of iguana to make stripes. I found it easiest to make little “V” shapes right under where the spiked humps are.

Make a french knot for the eye.

    Sarah, I so love these appliques of the day! I'm actually kinda curious what the back of some of yours look like? I try to hid my tails, but since these are two dimensional vs. a toy (which I normally make), I'm struggling with getting things to not be obvious from the back side. I know you are gonna put yours on a blanket, but I'm thinking of making pins to wear and wondering if I should back with felt before I glue on the pin?
