Love the Earth Crochet C2C Blanket for Earth Day

Yesterday I shared my corner-to-corner Love Earth square—and today it’s officially a blanket!
I added a sweet little border featuring hearts in a row, which was the perfect finishing touch.

This Earth Day blanket is just the right size for babies or toddlers, but you can easily keep repeating the border rounds to make it larger.

And tomorrow… I’ll be sharing something extra special that pairs perfectly with this Love Earth blanket. I can’t wait to show you!

Once you have made the square, follow the directions below to add the border.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver in Turqua, Spring Green, and Cherry Red (you only need one skein of each)
– Red Heart with Love in color Eggshell (only one skein)

– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Corner-to-Corner (C2C) Crochet Love Earth Square

Finished size = Approximately 27 x 27 inches but feel free to make larger by continuing the rounds of the border.

Border Round 1:
with eggshell white yarn
SC in the spaces between each “pixel square”, chain 2 in between each SC. When you get to the corners make a SC + chain 2 + SC in each.

Border Round 2:
with eggshell white yarn
Make 2 SC in each chain 2 space all the way around. Make a SC + chain 2 + SC in each corner.

Border Round 3:
with spring green yarn
DC in each stitch around. Make DC + chain 2 + DC in each corner.

Border Round 4 and 5:
with turqua blue yarn
DC in each stitch around. Make DC + chain 2 + DC in each corner.

Border Round 6:
with cherry red yarn
Heart cluster over first two stitches, chain 2, skip a stitch, heart cluster over next two stitches, chain 2, skip a stitch, repeat around, making a heart cluster + chain 2 + heart cluster in each of the corners, join to first stitch.

NOTE: When you finish the row of heart clusters and you have an extra stitch at the end (before the corner) without enough room to make one more heart, go ahead and skip an extra stitch and start working in the corner.

Special Stitch = Heart Cluster
Yarn over pull through first stitch, pull through 2 loops (making the first half of your DC), yarn over and pull up through same stitch, pull through 2 loops, you should now have 3 loops on your hook, working in the next stitch repeat the same 2 stitches so you have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 stitches.

Border Round 7:
with turqua blue yarn
Reach over to the first chain space, DC + Long DC + DC in chain space, reach over the next chain space and make a DC + Long DC + DC, repeat around making 2 DC + chain 2 + 2 DC in each corner, join to first DC, chain 2

Special Stitch = Elongated Double Crochet (Long DC)
When you are working your DC stitches between the heart clusters, one of your double crochets will reach down to the previous round. Yarn over pull through bringing up that loop up to the height of the double crochet before it. Yarn over pull through two loops. Yarn over pull through last two loops.

Border Round 8:
with turqua blue yarn
DC in each stitch around. Make 2 DC + chain 2 + 2DC in each corner.

Border Round 9:
with spring green yarn
DC in each stitch around. Make DC + chain 2 + DC in each corner, join, fasten off and weave in ends.

Love the Earth any day with a blanket stitched from the heart.
