Who says granny square yarn is only for granny squares?
Sometimes lining up those color changes just right can feel tricky. So instead of fighting it, I decided to flip the script… and WOW did it work!
The best projects often come from those little ah-ha! moments — when you look at a yarn and think, “What if I use it for something totally different?”
That’s exactly what happened when I started playing with the brand-new Red Heart All In One Granny Square Grande yarn. While it’s designed to create big, bold granny squares with built-in color changes, I put it to work in another way… and the result was a striped crochet pumpkin that’s perfect for fall.
The Yarn
I used the Humdinger colorway of Red Heart All In One Granny Square Grande. This yarn automatically shifts colors as you stitch, which is what normally makes the granny square effect possible. But here’s the fun part — those natural transitions also make gorgeous autumn stripes when you work it up in a round project like a pumpkin!
Each ball of Granny Square Grande usually makes four 12″ motifs, but this little hack shows how versatile it can be.
The Pattern
For the pumpkin itself, I followed the medium-size pumpkin pattern from the free Red Heart Crochet Pumpkin Topiary Project. It’s a simple, well-written pattern that works up quickly, and the All In One yarn did all the striping magic for me.
Plus this Pumpkin Topiary Pattern has such a clever twist on construction! Typically, making a crochet pumpkin involves a tapestry needle and extra yarn to form ridges along the sides — which means lots of adjusting and pulling to get the indents just right. But this design builds the pumpkin grooves right into the stitches themselves! Working in rounds of single crochet creates the indents, while the double crochet increases form the ribs, giving you beautifully defined ridges without the extra step. It’s simple, smart, and looks so polished.
The Result
The colors in Humdinger gave my pumpkin the perfect fall vibes without having to change yarns or weave in a bunch of ends. It’s stripy, seasonal, and just a little bit unexpected — a fresh spin on both the yarn and the project.
The medium pumpkin measures approximately 10 inches wide and 5 inches tall.
When crocheting the medium pumpkin, it used the yarn that would normally create one full Granny Square plus about half of another. Since a ball of Red Heart All In One Granny Square Grande makes four squares total, you can easily get around three medium pumpkins from a single skein!
For the stem, I used Red Heart Super Saver in Café Latte. The stem pattern is simple and included in the Pumpkin Topiary pattern, but you could also swap it out for a cinnamon stick or craft twigs if you’d like a more rustic look.
This yarn would also work perfectly for the smaller and larger pumpkins in the topiary set, so you can mix sizes for a fun stacked display.
What I love most about this little hack is how it shows the versatility of All In One yarn beyond just granny squares. The striping effect looks completely natural in round projects like this pumpkin, giving it such a unique seasonal vibe. Some people even said it reminded them of candy corn, which makes it extra perfect for fall and Halloween décor! Plus, with fewer yarn changes you get a faster finish (and fewer ends to weave in), which is always a win. I also love how this project doubles as home décor. Just set it on a shelf or table for an instant autumn touch. And while I used the Humdinger colorway, I can already imagine how the other bright colorways of Granny Square Grande would make equally fun, striped pumpkins in all sorts of playful palettes.
