Dress code for today: an orange cardigan! Not only is it the perfect fit to celebrate the debut of Taylor Swift’s new album The Life of a Showgirl, but it’s also the ultimate fall wearable and a great color for Halloween!
I used Red Heart Super Saver in color Carrot Orange but you can stitch yours in any color you love! I suggest using a worsted weight yarn and there are lots of shades to choose from in the Red Heart, Bernat, and Caron lines.
This cardigan is truly one of the easiest crochet garments you can make. It’s built from just two hexagons using the basic double crochet stitch. Start with a small hexagon and work in rounds until the piece is as big (or small) as you’d like. When you fold the two hexagons together, they magically create the sleeves and body of the cardigan. All that’s left is a simple seam, and you have yourself a cozy cardi!
Want extra length? It’s easy—just attach your yarn and add rows of double crochet to extend the arms or bottom edge.

– Red Heart Super Saver in color Carrot Orange (3 skeins)

– Tapestry needle
Crochet Hexagon Pattern (Make 2)
Round 1: Magic Ring, chain 2 (does not count as your first DC). 3 DC, ch 2, repeat around until you have 6 groups of 3 DC separated by chain-2 spaces. Join to first DC, chain 2.
Rounds 2–12 (or more): DC in each DC from previous round. In each chain-2 corner space, work (2 DC + ch 2 + 2 DC). Join to first DC, chain 2.
- Youth: 12-14 rounds
- Adult Small: 15 rounds
- Adult Medium: 17 rounds
- Adult Large: 19 rounds
- Adult XL: 21 rounds
- Adult XXL: 23 rounds
Assembly
- Fold each hexagon so that 3 points meet. This will form one sleeve and one side of the body.
- Lay the two folded pieces together and stitch the back seam using a slip stitch join (or whip/mattress stitch with a needle).
- Join the top edge of the sleeve seams the same way.
- (Optional) Turn your cardigan inside out for a flatter seam finish.
Adding Length
Sleeves:
- Join in yarn anywhere along the edge of the sleeve.
- DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2. (exact stitch count doesn’t matter) Continue to DC in rounds until it is the length desired. I recommend adding at least 6 rows. Do not fasten off. Now you will start on the ribbed cuffs.
- Chain 7 (or longer if you want the cuff larger), SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, slip stitch in 4 of the stitches on last row of sleeve, turn, SC in back loops of the 6 SC’s from cuff, chain 1, turn SC in back loops of the SC stitches until you get back to the sleeve, slip stitch in 4 stitches, turn Repeat until end! If you don’t have 4 stitches to slip stitch in at the end, that is ok. Stitch the edges of the cuff together using your loose end and tapestry needle.
Bottom Edge:
- Join yarn at bottom corner of cardigan.
- DC in each stitch along bottom, when you get to the corner edge on the other side, chain 2, turn. Add as many rows to the bottom as desired.
- Finish with ribbing, worked just like the sleeves, along the bottom and front opening.
Attach yarn anywhere along the edge of your cardi and chain 7, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, slip stitch in 2 of the stitches along edge of cardigan, turn, SC in back loops of the 6 SC’s from cuff, chain 1, turn SC in back loops of the SC stitches until you get back to the cardigan edge, slip stitch in 2 stitches, turn and repeat. Work your way along all edges until back to where you are started and stitch edges of the ribbing together.
NOTE: I did not add length to the bottom of the cardigan pictured. I only added length to the sleeves and a ribbed edge along all sides.
