Crochet Bumble Bee Keychain

January 8, 2015

Here is another “Bee Mine Valentine” bumble bee keychain idea. You saw the felt version yesterday and now I am showing you how to crochet one! I have other ideas for this little bee so stay tuned!

Materials
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Duckie (yellow), black, and white.
– Size F crochet hook.. G would work as well.
– Key ring (optional)
– Tapestry needle
– Small heart button (optional)
– Two small safety eyes

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease

For the wings you will use my Easy Crochet Heart Pattern found HERE.

Bee Pattern:
beginning with yellow yarn
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 4-8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
change to black yarn
Round 9-10: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
change back to yellow yarn
At this point you will want to add the safety eyes and stitch on the mouth and button.
Round 11: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 12: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
change to black yarn
Round 13: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 14: SC Decrease around.
Take your tapestry needle and sew the rest shut by weaving the tapestry needle under the front loops of your stitches one by one until it is closed and forms somewhat of a point.

Sew wings onto the back. If the tail you are weaving in is long enough, pull it through the very top and use it as the strand you attach your key ring to!

Felt Bumble Bee Keychain

January 7, 2015

Bee Mine Valentine! Make this cute little felt bumble bee keychain for your sweetie! Or make it just because it’s adorable and reminds me of Spring 🙂 And lets be honest, who doesn’t love a cute little felt bee with yarn antennae and a heart button?! I’ve provided a template below for easy crafting. And here’s a spoiler… tomorrow I will post a crochet version 🙂

Materials:
– Yellow, Black, and White Felt
– Yellow, Balck, and White Yarn scraps
– Key ring
– Small heart button
– Bee template CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD
– Hot glue gun
– Needle
Note: You can choose to hot glue everything together and skip sewing together edges with yarn. Up to you!
Print out template and cut two body pieces, two heart wings, and the black stripes.

Sew face and hear button on one of the body pieces. Attach yarn to keyring and sew yarn edging around wings with needle (optional)

Hot glue keyring string and bottoms of heart wings to the center of the second body piece. Do not glue along edge where you will be sewing. Of course if you decide not to sew, just go ahead and glue the entire thing together 🙂

Now sew the two body pieces together.

String a strand of black yarn through the top of head and make about 8 square knots for each antennae. You will need to use your needle to string yarn through the felt.

All finished! Of course you could leave the keychain off and use this as a magnet, appliqué, pin, ornament, or hanging from a mobile. So many options!

Crochet Cupcake

March 25, 2015

It’s a big birthday week here in our house! Big brother turns 6 and little brother turns 4. It’s also my brothers birthday as well! My mom and I both gave birth to baby boys on March 24th, 28 years apart 🙂 How cool is that?! Is it silly to hope that someday Zoe also has a March 24th baby?! We’ve been celebrating with a lot of cake and donuts and I suddenly felt like I need a no-calorie version. This crochet cupcake is going to be perfect for play tea parties and will make a nice addition to the kids little play kitchen. I plan on making a dozen! And if you like this little cupcake you might also like my little crochet cupcake keychains and my crochet cupcake hat!

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn in white, brown, red, and little multi-colored yarn scraps for the sprinkles. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice the for the whole cupcake.
– Size G Crochet hook (although you could use a larger hook!)
– Tapestry needle
– Poly-fil stuffing (optional)

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
French Knot Tutorial

Finished cupcake is about 3.5 x 3.5 inches

Cupcake Pattern:
Starting with white yarn..
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, pull tight and join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 5-6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Work in front loops only for Round 7
Round 7: In front loops: in next stitch make 3 HDC, slip stitch in next, *3 HDC, slip stitch, repeat from * around, join, fasten off and weave in ends. You have now made 12 scallops.
Now working in the back loops from Round 7, attach brown yarn and chain 1
Round 8: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
NOTE: At this point you will want to attach your sprinkles and cherry
Round 9-12: working in both loops, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 13: working in back loops only, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 14: working in both loops again, SC Decrease, SC, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 15: SC decrease until closed!

Be sure to stuff with poly-fil before completely closing cupcake. I actually used all of my long yarn ends to stuff it. After weaving in your ends, there is not need to trim them. They make great stuffing!

Cherry pattern:
With red yarn
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 4 SC in ring, pull tight and join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 4: SC decrease until closed
Use loose ends to stuff and sew onto top of cupcake

Sprinkles:
Make sprinkles using a french knot. I think THIS TUTORIAL explains it well.

Crocheted Spring Wreath

February 2, 2015

Nothing is better than the sweet colors of spring. Brighten up your days with this colorful crocheted spring wreath! Don’t let all the pieces intimidate you. The simple spring crochet flower pattern works up in a matter of minutes so you can easily crochet a dozen or two in no time.

Materials:
– 12 inch round styrofoam wreath. I found mine at Michaels.
– Size H Hook
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in these colors:
Sweet Pea (green) for the main color that wraps around the wreath.
Fern green for the leaves
Pink Poodle, Aqua, Duckie, Goldfish, Cheery Cherry, Lamb, and Dusty Purple. These are all Vanna’s Choice Baby Colors except for the Dusty Purple.
– White Buttons in a variety of sizes.
– Tapestry Needle
– Hot Glue Gun

If you want to add the crochet bee you can find the pattern and materials HERE.

First you will create a long crocheted strip that you will then wrap around and stitch together onto the wreath.

The pattern is simple:
With size H hook Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down the chain, chain 1, turn (20 SC) Rows 2-150: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (20 SC)
Leave a long long tail after your last row so you can stitch the edges together onto the wreath. When you wrap your crocheted strip around the wreath make sure your rows match up. Now take your tapestry needle and start stitch it together. It always looks like it won’t work out, but keep matching up the beginning of the row to the end of the same row and it will all come together with no lumps or bumps at the end.

Now make your flowers! Use my Simple Spring Crocheted Flowers pattern.
Then make your leaves. I followed THIS Crochet Leaves pattern by Mamachee.
Now make it easy on yourself. Grab your hot glue gun and glue those flowers and leaves on!
I created a separate crochet strip to hang my wreath on the door hanger.
Chain 46, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first 5, chain 5, skip 5 stitches, SC in next 25, chain 5, skip stitches, SC in last 5, chain 1 turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across (making 5 single crochets along each chain 5, chain 1, turn
Row 4: SC in each stitch across and continue around piece with a Picot stitch (SC + chain 3 + SC in last chain + SC in next stitch). Fasten off and weave in ends.

If you like this wreath you might like my other seasonal wreaths. Check out my FALL WREATH, WINTER WREATH, and SUMMER WREATH!

Crochet Shamrock

January 18, 2015

Here is another way you can use my easy crochet heart pattern… to make a shamrock! Sew three green hearts together and you have the leaves. A simple chain makes a stem. I have been using my easy crochet heart pattern for so many projects: Crochet Heart Wand, Crochet LoveBug Lovey,  and my Crochet Bumble Bee. Just by using different size hooks, you can easily change the size of these hearts. I am sure you will think of many other ways to put this pattern to use!

You can find the EASY CROCHET HEARTS PATTERN HERE.

Materials:
-Worsted Weight Yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Sweet Pea.
– Size F Crochet Hook
– Tapestry needle

Finished Shamrock measures approximately 4×4 inches.

Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Make 3 Easy Crochet Hearts. (4 if you want to make a 4-leaf clover!)
Sew edges that need to touch together. Weave your tapestry needle under the top of the single crochet’s on both sides at the same time. Weave in ends.
Attach a new piece of yarn in the middle.
Chain 14. DC in 3rd chain from hook and in next, HDC in next 2, SC the rest of the way down chain. Join with slip stitch to the middle of the shamrock leaves. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Add a little flair by slip stitching with a different shade of green around the edges.
This would make a great appliqué for a St. Patrick’s Day hat!

Crochet “You Are My Sunshine” EOS Lip Balm Valentine

January 15, 2015

Is there someone who brings a little sunshine in your life!? Then this the perfect Valentine or “just because” gift for them! Crochet a simple sun ring around an orange or yellow EOS Lip Balm and pair it with the free printable I created. Easy-peasy! I was inspired by my friend Kara from Petals to Picots “Your the Balm” Valentine and Printable where she crocheted a bomb around an EOS Lip Balm container! So clever! See it and get the free pattern HERE.

Materials:
– Yellow worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Ducky yellow. This is my new favorite colors. I used it HERE and HERE!
– Size F crochet hook
– Tapestry Needle
– EOS Lip Balm in yellow or orange. I used their tangerine flavor
– You Are My Sunshine Printable Card. You can download it for free HERE <<<

Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Sun Ring Pattern:
Chain 25 (or more/less depending on your tension), join to first chain to make a loop. You will want the loop to fit SNUG around the EOS Lip Balm.
Round 2: Make 30 SC around the chain loop, join to first SC
Round 3: Chain 5, *Slip stitch in first chain, SC in next chain, HDC in next, DC in last, skip 2 SC in round and join with slip stitch, Chain 5 and repeat from * all the way around making 10 triangular points.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Press ring snuggly onto the lip balm. You may need to press in the little piece of bulging plastic around the bottom of the lip balm.

You may notice the triangles curl up a bit. You can spray it with Stiffen Spray or use THESE METHODS to stiffen your piece.

Print and cut out the FREE “You Are My Sunshine” Printable and attach with tape.

Crochet Rock Star Guitar Hat Pattern

October 18, 2013

Today is a special day… It’s my 2 year Blogiversary! I’ve been blogging for exactly 2 years and I am so overwhelmed with all the support you have shown me. Some of you have been here from the beginning and some of you are new to my blog. Either way, I am grateful that you are here following along. I am in total shock at how quickly my blog and Facebook page has grown over the past couple of months. Thank you for all the positive feedback you give me when I post something new. I truly appreciate every “like,” “share,” and “comment” and I am in awe that I have almost 40,000 Facebook followers! My blog and Facebook page has grown to the point where unfortunately I am unable to respond to every e-mail, comment, or post on my wall. But I am thankful for all of you who try to help each other when someone has a question. I am amazed at this wonderful online community of crafters and crocheters. Please continue to help me by helping each other. You are always welcome to reply to others comments and post your projects or links to your shops on my Facebook wall or in the comments. This will enable me to continue working hard to post new craft tutorials, free crochet patterns, and crock pot recipe ideas.

Anyway, I guess what I am really trying to say is
THANK YOU, YOU ROCK!
Lets celebrate with a new hat pattern: a Rock Star Guitar Crochet Hat!
Well, ok, this may not be completely new… I am sure you recognize my basic hat pattern by now. But I am including a template and instructions on how to make and attach the felt guitar. And if you don’t crochet, feel free to use the guitar template below to make a rockin’ felt guitar key chain, magnet, zipper pull or ornament! If you need a more detailed tutorial on how to make the felt keychain see my Felt Forest Friends Keychains post.

With black yarn, attach yarn and SC around the entire bottom edge of the hat (including earflaps). Fasten off and weave in ends. Cut 6 long strands of black yarn, pull yarn halfway through last loop of the earflaps (you now have 12 strands). Knot, braid and knot again at the end of your braid. Trim ends of braided tails so yarn is even. Do this for both earflaps.

Felt Guitar:
Download and print out the template below. Use it as a guide to cut the big guitar shape from black felt and the smaller part of the guitar from white felt.

NOTE: You should NOT have to pay Scribd.com to access this printable. I have never paid them anything. This is a free service. If you do get a message that says you need to pay, it may just be that you need to sign in by creating a FREE account. Click on the “Log in” or “Sign Up” text in the upper right hand corner of their website.

ALSO NOTE: The guitar template can be printed in different sizes. You can adjust the scale percentage in your printer setting. This is what it looks like on my computer:

Guitar Template

When you have your pieces cut out, you will want to first sew on the smaller white guitar portion onto the black with a piece of 2-ply yarn (separate your 4-ply worsted weight yarn) and a small tapestry needle. Stitch along the edges.

Then sew the guitar onto the hat. Again use a piece of 2-ply yarn.
Finally, you will want to sew on your button going all the way through the hat and the two layers of felt.

Now Rock Out!
