Mini Winter Crochet Hats

January 20, 2021

I’ve been crocheting a few different mini hat designs over the past few weeks (See my Mini Holiday Hats HERE and my Mini Party Hats HERE) and now I’m adding Mini Winter Hats to the mix! The fun part of this particular design is that they fit the Easy Crochet Bunnies that I posted a few day ago! They are now Snow Bunnies! You could customize these hats to make them holiday themed. Add a heart button for Valentine’s Day, a flower button for Easter or Spring, as shamrock button for St. Patrick’s Day, etc. Follow the written pattern below or watch the video tutorial on my YouTube Channel!

2019 Corner-to-Corner Crochet Hat

December 18, 2018

Sparkly and festive for your New Year’s Eve celebration but cute enough to wear all year! Make 2019 your best year yet and sport this corner-to-corner crochet hat! First you crochet the corner-to-corner (C2C) pattern using the pixel graph provided below. Then I show you how to stitch it up and turn it into an adorable earflap hat complete with pom-poms! I am using a size G hook and Bernat Satin Sparkle Yarn in colors Coral and Platinum. I chose this yarn because not only is it full of celebration sparkles but Coral is also the 2019 Pantone color of the year!

Materials:
– Bernat Satin Sparkle in Plantinum (2 skeins)
– Bernat Satin Sparkle in Coral (1 Skein)
Shop yarn HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size G Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Jumbo Clover Pom-pom maker. Shop HERE.
– Small Clover Pom-pom maker. Shop HERE.
– 2019 pixel graph – download HERE

I used the corner-to-corner crochet method to make this blanket. Instead of using DC stitches like a traditional C2C, I used HDC. See THIS VIDEO on how to corner-to-corner crochet using the Half Double Crochet!

First you will want to download the 2019 Pixel Graph. You can do that HERE.

Keep in mind that your numbers will not be reversible. The 2019 will be backwards on the backside which will become the inside of your hat.

This pattern is sized for a Teen/Adult size hat. You could take away rows on either side of the graph to make the width of the hat smaller, but then your numbers would no longer be on the front. They would wrap around the entire hat. You could use this graph to crochet the 2019 in SC stitches (like a graphgran). So use a basic SC hat pattern (like THIS one from Yarnspirations) and add in the 2019 using SC stitches in the middle of the hat.

If you aren’t familiar with the C2C technique, I have a video class available HERE for purchase that teaches you this technique! The CrochetCrowd also has a very helpful video tutorial for FREE that shows you the basic technique of corner-to-corner crochet. Check that out HERE.

Once you have the C2C portion finished, you will stitch it up, add the brim, earflaps, and pom-poms! Let me walk you through this process with the video below.

Stitch up the C2C piece, creating a circle. Then weave tapestry needle in and out of top portion and pull tight to cinch top of hat together. Weave in ends.

Attach yarn at bottom of hat and SC around making anywhere from 60-70 SC stitches along the bottom. The more SC stitches you make, the looser it will be. Exact count doesn’t matter.

SC around the brim for 3 rounds (more if you want it longer).
Then add on earflaps:

Earflap 1:
Chain 1, SC in next 12, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 8, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC across (10 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC across (8 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC across ( 6 SC)
Row 8: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC across (4 SC)
Row 10: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 11: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends

On opposite side of hat attach yarn and make second earflap.

Earflap 2:

Join yarn, chain 1, SC in next 12, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 8, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC across (10 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC across (8 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC across ( 6 SC)
Row 8: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC across (4 SC)
Row 10: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn

Row 11: SC decrease, and continue to SC around hat and earflaps, when you get to the top of each earflap: chain 35 (or as long/short as you wish), slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook and the rest of the way down the chain. Continue to SC around the hat and fasten off when you get the entire way around.

Now make a jumbo pom-pom for the top of the hat and two small pom-poms for the earflaps!

Fun and Festive! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all!

Extreme Crochet Hat

December 27, 2017

Chilly weather calls for chunky hats! And boy oh boy, do I have a big cozy hat for you! This crochet hat is only 4 rows long! That is because it’s made with the giant, super bulky, big stitch merino wool from Mama Knows Luxury! This is the same yarn that is used for extreme hand/arm knitting which is the most traditional way to use this yarn. You can see an entire series on this HERE with beautiful photos and video tutorials.

Sarah from Mama Knows Luxury has the biggest and best selection of huge merino wool! I actually got a chance to meet Sarah when I was visiting Toronto for the Our Maker Life Knit and Crochet Meetup (you and read all about that HERE) and flipped through her big book of yarn samples – what a treat that was! Here is Sarah showing me an extreme knit sample!

You can find this yarn RIGHT HERE in the Mama Knows Luxury Etsy Shop. And before I go on, be sure to use THIS LINK and enter the coupon code REPEATCRAFTERME at checkout for 20% off! No end date to that deal!!
Now if you buy this giant yarn, you will also need a giant crochet hook! This 40mm crochet extreme hook is also available HERE in the Mama Knows Luxury Etsy Shop!

Ok so let’s get to this easy-peasy pattern!
First you will want to split your yarn into two. This will give you double the amount! And it will be a bit thinner and easier to crochet with. Follow THIS TUTORIAL from All About Ami on how to split your yarn (really it just pulls apart but you will want to see her beautifully written and photographed blog post on how exactly to do this)
Materials:
– Big Stitch Merino Wool from Mama Knows Luxury. I am using colors Periwinkle and Peacock, and Neutral.
– 40mm Crochet Hook

Extreme Crochet Hat Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 5 SC in ring, do not join, continue to crochet in rounds.
With purple
Skip over chain 1 when starting round 2.
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around (10 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 4, 2 SC in next, SC in last 4 (12 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around (12 SC),
Round 5: join in white yarn. in back loops only, Slip Stitch in each stitch around, fasten off and weave in ends.

You can weave in the ends with your fingers!
Make a pom pom!
Loosely wrap yarn strand around hand about 4 times. Slip off hand and tie in the middle with a tight knot. Cut loops and trim!
Go big or go home, right?! Zoe wanted a hat too! And despite the way it looks, it’s not heavy! The stitches are big and loose! For her hat, I used the same pattern as above but stopped increasing after the second round so it only has 10 SC stitch around instead of 12.

See THIS POST for complete care and information about big stitch yarn.

Chunky Bunny Crochet Hat

March 16, 2017

BunnyHat3

It’s basically spring but I know a lot of you are still have heavy winter weather. This chunky bunny crochet hat will keep those heads warm! Made with Bernat Softee Chunky yarn that is soft and makes the hat a quick one to work up. But the best part of all is that the chunky yarn allows for the ears to stand up without any other support on the inside!

And how about those super sweet fabric ears?! Those were made by poking holes in fleece fabric and crocheting around the edges. You can choose ANY color or print of fleece fabric to change up the look of the hat!

I used a Skip Stitch Blade to poke holes around the fleece fabric. You can purchase a skip stitch blade and rotary cutter on slipstitch.com but for a detailed tutorial on how to use the skip stitch blade to cute fabric see THIS POST.

Materials:
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Bernat Softee Chunky yarn in Clay. Shop all colors at Yarnspirations.com
– Fleece Fabric (1/2 yard is more than enough!) I purchase the pink polkadots at JoAnn Fabrics.
– Skip Stitch Blade Original #1 <<<< purchase here.
– 45mm Fiskars Rotary Cutter
– Tapestry Needle

SkipStitch

Basic Hat:
Note: I made Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC) and Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) stitches on the bottom of my hat. In hindsight, this wasn’t such a great idea. It causes the rim to be very tight/stiff. I suggest finishing the whole hat in basic DC stitches as written below. If you do like the look of the ribbed band on the bottom edge of the hat, forgo the last 2 rows stitches in each size and finish with 4 rounds of FPSC and BPSC alternating.

Size: 0-3 Months
Magic ring, chain 2, make 10 DC in magic ring, join to first DC, ch 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join, ch 2 (20 DC)

Round 5: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next three, join, ch 2 (50 DC)
Round 6: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next four, join, ch 2 (60 DC)
Round 7-12: DC around (60 DC)
Round 13: SC around (60 SC)

Fasten off weave in ends

Ears (make 2):
Chain 12, DC in 3rd chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, make 5 DC in last chain, now working on other side of chain, DC in each stitch, do not join, turn, chain 1
Row 2: SC in first 8, HDC in next 2, 3 DC in next 4, HDC in next 2, SC in last 8, fasten off leaving long tail.

You will use one of the ears as your template to trace an ear piece in the fabric
BunnyTut1
Cut it out and use it as your template to cut out a second fabric ear!
BunnyTut2
Fabric ear should be smaller than crocheted ear.
BunnyTut3

Use your skip stitch blade to cut holes along the edge of your ear. You will want to twist your blade and fabric to go around the curve. It’s ok to pick your blade up mid-cut. Just be sure to line up the blade with the last hole made when you place it back down. Keep in mind that YOU decide which holes to crochet in so if there is an extra hole, it’s typically no big deal.

BunnyTut4
SC + chain in each hole around the fabric ear.
BunnyTut5
BunnyTut6
Stitch the crocheted ear and fabric ear together with a tapestry needle. No need to stuff them! The Bernat Softee Chunky yarn makes these are thick and sturdy!
BunnyTut7
Sew both ears on the top of the hat!
BunnyHat7
Front of ears
BunnyHat5
Back of ears
BunnyHat6
At this point you can stop and enjoy your bunny hat! OR embellish it with a flower crown!
I used a bit of Bernat Super Value worsted weight yarn and size H crochet hook.
BunnyHat4
Follow THIS tutorial to make these easy crochet flowers!
BunnyHat2
Sew them on to the top of the hat in front of the ears. You shouldn’t need more than 3 or 4 flowers.
BunnyHat3
Hoppy Easter!

June 29, 2015

If you haven’t seen Disney Pixar’s Inside Out, you need to! It’s a movie based around 5 feelings that are in a young girls head: Anger, Sadness, Disgust, Fear… and JOY! Joy is the most important emotion, the main character in the movie and after many requests, I have crocheted a Joy inspired hat!

Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, ch 1
Round 3: 2 HDC in first, HDC in next, in first 6 stitches = 12 HDC, * 2 SC in next, SC in next, repeat around until end of row, join, chain 1
Round 4: SC in first 10 stitches, HDC in next 2 stitches, 2 DC in next 5, HDC in next 5, SC in last, join, fasten off leaving long tail.
Joy’s Eyes (right):
Same as left eye except work rounds 3 and 4 backwards… so Round 3 would look like this:
SC, 2 SC in next, *2 HDC in next, HDC in next, repeat from * until end of round.
With blue yarn
Slip stitch around outer edge of both white eyes (about 15 Slip stitches). Leave enough length on either end of yarn strand to stitch in a couple extra stitches on each side (weave in with tapestry needle, do not slip stitch).

Middle eye:
Starting with black yarn
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 3 HDC, 2 SC, 3 HDC, 2 SC, join with blue
Round 2: SC in each stitch around (I found it helps to make one extra SC at the end of the round to make it lay nicely.) Fasten off and weave in ends except one long one to sew onto bigger white eye.

Nose:

With cream yarn
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 2 SC, 3 HDC, 2 DC, 3 HDC, 2 SC, join, fasten off

Mouth:
With pink yarn and tapestry needle stitch on a mouth. I took a darker pink marker and colored on a little shade to the upper “lip”.

Alternatively you could crochet an open mouth although I wasn’t thrilled with how this turned out.

With black yarn
Chain 19, in second chain from hook SC in first 2 stitches, HDC in next 2, *2 DC in next, DC in next, repeat until 4 chains left… HDC in next 2, SC in last two, now working on other side of chain
SC in first 2 stitches, change to white, HDC in next 2, DC until 4 chains left, HDC in next two, change back to black, SC in last two.
Slip stitch in back loops only with pink yarn make a “chain 2, Slip stitch in 2nd chain” on each corner of the mouth.

Hair:
I chose Red Heart Boutique Sashay Sequins because I thought the color, texture and sparkle mimicked the characters in the movie (as in this close up shot of Joy).
The thickness of the boutique yarn also allowed for better coverage with less strands to attached.

Along the first two rounds of the hat I looped strands of the boutique yarn around two DC at a time using the same method as in the mane of my Unicorn Hat. You can fill in more hair after you start trimming and see what areas need more.

Time to play barber shop! Cut and style the hair. You can weave in some strands into the hat with a large tapestry needle and hot glue the shorter strands down to the longer strands (I never actually glued to the base hat) you could absolutely use worsted weight yarn as well. Keep in mind that it will take more strands to get the same effect.

Here is what the back of the hat looks like!

Love Button Crochet Hat

May 11, 2015

I love the combination of yarn, buttons, and felt! And a little of all three went into this Love Button Hat 🙂 Use this pattern and design as a inspiration for your own creation! I ordered the Alphabet buttons from Amazon and I think they are adorable but in full disclosure the package that was sent to me didn’t have any R’s or B’s… which kinda limits the word possibilities. They are about 3/4 in tall and come in pastel and dark pastel colors. Link to primary colored alphabet letters are below as well. Those ones are slightly larger.

Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Lime, Aqua, Pink, and Beige.
– Small piece of felt for the heart.
– Alphabet Buttons
– Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
Crochet Beanie:
CHANGE COLORS EVERY 3-4 ROWS!
Note: I decided to make a couple rows of single crochets along the bottom using a 4th color. If you want to do the same, change color on your last row and make two or three rows of Single Crochet’s instead of one row of Double Crochets.

Baymax Head:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)

Round 12: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 13: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1

Round 14: SC Decrease until closed.

Be sure to sew on buttons and line of black yarn between the button eyes after round 13. Then stuff with polyfil and continue to round 14.
Fasten off leaving long tail.
To make bigger head and arms use a larger hook and/or thicker yarn. For the head pattern, you can also increase one more time after Round 2… So Round 3 would look like this: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC).
Sew head onto top of hat. I stitched it on twice for extra support.
Baymax Arms: make 2
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1

Round 9: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 10-11: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 12: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 13-18: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 19: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 20-24: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Stuff lightly with polyfil and sew top of the arms closed.
To make arms longer, feel free to add on rounds during the repeat rows (3-4, 6-8, 10-11, 13-18, or at the end).  To make arms shorter, take off rows during the repeating rows or at the end.
The arms should hang over the bottom of the hat.
Sew arms onto the hat about 3 rows down from the top on each side (the side is where the hat creases when laid flat).  Then carry the tapestry needle down through the middle back of the arm, sewing it down to the had in a couple places. When you get to the bottom, stitch the edge of hat onto the bottom of the arms.

How to Create a Hidden Seam on Crochet Hats

August 29, 2014

Here is a quick tip on how to create a virtually hidden seam on crochet hats! If you struggle with uneven seams or gaping holes in the back of your hat, you will want to try this technique. It works by skipping over your chain stitches at the begging of the round, joining to your first stitch made, and then starting your next round in the same stitch as your chains stitches. This allows the chains to become “filler” stitches and keeps your seam from having large holes like in the orange hat below. This technique does work best with double crochet stitches but can be applied to any other types of stitches your pattern calls for.

Here is a short video tutorial on how to create the hidden seam:

And for those who prefer pictures here is a photo tutorial (as previously seen on my Owl Hats):

No matter the pattern you are working from, always join to the first DC (or whatever stitch the pattern calls for),
NOT your chain 2.

Now start your next round in the same stitch as your chain 2

Pretty simple, right?! If you are following my patterns, this is how you should be joining and starting your rounds!

Here is part 2 of the video tutorial that explains how to make the “icing,” cheeks, and mouth embellishments on the hat.

Gingerbread Cheeks:
With red yarn…
Magic Ring, chain 1, make 10 HDC inside of ring, join to first HDC, fasten off leaving tail to sew onto hat.
Gingerbread Icing:
You will want make a long series of chain and stitch them on in a wave around the hat.
For the 0-3 month size hat I chained 70 and stitched the chain on between rounds 4 and 5. You will want to make longer chains for the larger hats.
Gingerbread Leggings:
I haven’t figured out a good way to calculate size for these. You will want to measure the child’s leg before beginning so you know how many chains to make.
The ones pictured are too small for my 19 month old. I think they would fit a 6-12 month old. You can increase/decrease the beginning chain to make larger/smaller leggings.
Here is the pattern I used:
Chain 20, join to beginning of chain with a slip stitch, chain 1
Round 1-11: HDC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 12: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
With white yarn, chain 14 and stitch on to create “icing.”
Gingerbread Woman Bow:
Chain 10, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-4, SC across, chain 1, turn
at the end of row 4, continue to SC around the edges, join to first SC, fasten off and weave in ends.
Wrap yarn around the middle of the bow, tie off tightly and attach to hat.

You will also need Waldo’s glasses. Right now Wendy’s has a 2-pack of Where’s Waldo frames in their kids meals. We currently have 4 pairs! They are in our dress up bin and will be great for play throughout the year. They would also make perfect Harry Potter glasses. So grab them while they are still available in stores!

Now for the hat pattern.

You will need to know how to make a Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC) and a Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC). I have finally made my first video tutorial and will show you how to make the Front and Back Post Half Double Crochet! (next time I promise I won’t use my camera phone and will take the video in better lighting)

Waldo Crochet Hat Pattern
Size: approx. 2 – 4 years… it fits both my 1.5 and 3.5 year old.

Materials:
White and Red yarn (I used Vanna’s Choice brand for both colors)
Size H Hook
Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
Sl St = Slip Stitch
HDC = Half Double Crochet
FPHDC = Front Post Half Double Crochet
BPHDC = Back Post Half Double Crochet

With white yarn…
Magic Ring, 8 HDC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 HDC in each around, join, chain 1 (16 HDC)
Round 3: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1(24 HDC)
Round 4: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (32 HDC)
Round 5: 2 HDC in first stitch,  HDC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 HDC)
Round 6: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1 (48 HDC)
Round 7: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 5, repeat around, join, chain 1 (56 HDC)
Round 8: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 13, repeat around, join, chain 1 (60 HDC)
Round 9 – 16: HDC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (60 HDC)

Change color to Red

Round 17 – 23: FPHDC in first stitch, BPHDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (60)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

To make an extra large pom pom:

Note: Use red yarn, not blue. This tutorial was taken from my Thing 1 and Thing 2 hats which use the same size pom pom.

1. Cut out two cardboard circles that are approx. 4.5″ wide (I traced the lid to a sour cream container). Then cut a smaller circle in the middle of each one that are approx. 1.5″ wide.
2. Lay the two cardboard donuts on top of each other and start wrapping your yarn through the small hole and around your donuts. You will have to use multiple small balls of yarn. Don’t worry about connecting your yarn ends. Just make sure when you start and stop a new strand, the loose end is sticking out the edge of the donut and not in the middle.
3. Cut the edge of the yarn between cardboard donuts.
4. This is what your yarn should look like.
5. Slightly separate the cardboard pieces and tie a piece of yarn TIGHTLY around the middle.
6. Remove the cardboard completely and trim pom pom until all the strands look nice and neat and attach to the top of your hat!

There you have it! Your costume is ready to be worn! And this is one Waldo that won’t be hard to find 🙂

Thing 1 and Thing 2 Crochet Hats

October 13, 2012

My sons preschool asked each class to come up with a themed basket for the school’s annual auction. Our class decided on a books basket and I am having so much fun coming up with creative ideas for items to include! I had been wanting to make Thing 1 and Thing 2 crochets hats for awhile and knew it would be a perfect donation along with a Cat in the Hat book. But being that it is also October, and we are only a couple weeks away from Halloween, I thought they would make a great costume as well! So I am going to share with you how I made these hats in case any of you are inspired to make your own.

First you need the right color yarn. I used Vanna’s Choice worsted weight yarn in Scarlet. And Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Turqua. Any black and white colored worsted weight yarn will work for the Thing 1 and Thing 2 patches.

Next, I followed a basic crochet hat pattern.

I like this FREE earflap hat pattern by Alli Crafts. You can choose to include earflaps or leave them off as I did. Just make sure you use red for the hat and then switch to blue along the last row.

Here is the pattern for Thing 1 and Thing 2 patches:

With size H hook and white yarn,
Magic Ring, 10 DC in magic ring, join, chain 2.
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around (20 DC), join, chain 2.
Round 3: 2 DC in each stitch around (40 DC),
now change color to black and Slip Stitch in the back loops only all the way around the circle. Fasten off and weave in ends.

To make the Thing 1 and Thing 2 writing, I used a technique call a surface slip stitch. HERE is a great tutorial on how to make a surface slip stitch from the Crochet Spot.

Lastly, you need to make an extra large pom pom.

These would be a great costume for siblings! And wouldn’t these make the perfect gift for twin babies?!

Mickey and Minnie Mouse Crochet Hat Pattern

June 3, 2012

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is my 3 year olds new favorite show and the inspiration for these crochet hats! I am sharing the pattern for newborn size, but will give you tips on how to make them in larger sizes.
Mickey and Minnie Mouse Crochet Hats
Size: Newborn
Materials:
– Medium worsted weight yarn in black, red and pink
– Size H (5.0) Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Two 1″ white buttons for Mickey hat, 1/2″ or 1/4″ white buttons for Minnie hat and bow.
Hat Pattern:
Note: Always begin your round in same stitch as your joining chain
Magic Ring, chain 1
10 HDC in magic ring, join to first HDC, ch 1
Round 2: 2 HDC in each around (20 HDC), join, chain 1
Round 3: 2 HDC, HDC in next, repeat around (30 HDC), join, chain 1
Round 4: 2 HDC, HDC in next 2, repeat around (40 HDC), join, chain 1
Round 5-9: HDC in each around (40 HDC)
Round 10-14: HDC in each around with red yarn for Mickey or pink for Minnie (40 HDC), fasten off, weave in ends.
Sew on two white buttons for Mickey Hat and smaller 1/4-1/2 inch white buttons to create polkadots for Minnie hat. I used six 1/4″ buttons for Minnie’s bow and nine 1/2″ buttons for the bottom of the Minnie hat.

Ears (make 2):
Magic ring, chain 1
12 HDC in magic ring, pull tight, join to first HDC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around (24 HDC), join, chain 1
Round 3: 2 SC, SC in next, repeat around (36 SC), fasten off but leave long tail for sewing onto hat
Sew ears between rows 3 and 6
*Make two ears and sew together for thicker, sturdier ears. I did this with the Mickey hat, but not for Minnie.

Minnie’s Bow:
Chain 16,
Row 1: HDC in second chain from hook, HDC in next 14, chain 1, turn
Row 2-5: HDC across (15 HDC)
At the end of row 5, do not turn, continue to SC around edges, join to first SC in row 5. Faston off, weave in ends.
– Scrunch the middle of the bow accordion style  and with a tapestry needle, sew yarn through the middle. – With long tail, wrap yarn the middle approx. 10-15 times. Tie off, but leave a tail for sewing onto hat.
I sewed the middle of the bow to the top center of the hat and also sewed the bow to the ears.
For bigger sizes:
Note: I have not tested the bigger patterns but it is what I use for basic increases.
0-3 Months:
Follow instructions above till Round 4
Round 5: 2 HDC, HDC in next 7, repeat around (45 HDC)
Round 6-14: HDC in each around (45 HDC)
3-6 Months:
Follow instructions above till Round 4
Round 5: 2 HDC, HDC in next 3, repeat around (50 HDC)
Round 6-15: HDC in each around (50 HDC)
6-9 Months:
Follow instructions above till Round 4
Round 5: 2 HDC, HDC in next 3, repeat around (50 HDC)
Round 6: 2 HDC, HDC in next 9, repeat around (55 HDC)
Round 7-16: HDC in each around (55 HDC)
To increase ear size, continue with Round 3 of the ear pattern above until they look proportional to the hat.
To increase bow size, increase the number of starting chains until length desired and then continue with rows of HDC’s until it is as big as you would like it.
*** You may make and sell products from my patterns but if you do I ask that you link back to my post. Please do not copy and post this pattern and claim it as your own. Please do not re-publish photo’s as your own.***

Words with Friends Crochet Hat

December 22, 2011

I sort of feel guilty for the amount of time I spend playing Words With Friends. I pretty much always have at least 5-10 games going a day. If you have never played this game, beware, it’s addicting! Just for fun I decided to make my littlest a WWF beanie. The crocheted beanie pattern is from Alli Crafts, the yellow tiles are made of felt and the black letters are Stick-It Felt Letters.
Here is my future Words With Friends addict :o)

Buddy the Elf Crochet Hat

November 7, 2011

It’s less than two months till Christmas which means I have already busted out my Christmas movies and have been watching one every night! Elf is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies so I thought it would be cute to crochet a Buddy the Elf hat for my little guy! I followed THIS free candy corn crochet hat pattern by Taraduff. Instead of the classic candy corn colors I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in fern green and yellow for the middle stripe. Stick in a red craft feather to complete the look!

What are your favorite Christmas movies?

Crochet Knit-Look Heart Hat

February 9, 2022

Remember the crochet snow-speckled hat I made last month? Well I thought I would move those cute little snow-specks a bit closer together and create a heart! Pretty much the same pattern with just an adjustment on where you make the color changes. I also decided I think I like the SC stitches on the brim better than the HDC stitches. It gives it a better elasticity. This is a one-size-fits-most pattern and am putting the entire pattern in this post so you don’t have to toggle back to the snow-speckled hat pattern.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in medium purple, orchid (for brim) and white for heart
Shop colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Faux Fur pom-pom (optional) I got them HERE on Amazon
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

NOTE: The pattern works from the bottom up. You will begin with the ribbed brim and then crochet directly onto the brim in rounds.

Heart Hat Pattern:
One-Size-Fits-Most

Starting with Ribbing (Brim of Hat)
With light purple (orchid) yarn
Chain 9, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 2-64: in back loops only, SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn
slip stitch both ends of the ribbing together and SC around the edge of the ribbing with a total stitch count of 64 STITCHES.
Now join in medium purple yarn and chain 1
NOTE: from here on out you will be working in the front center of the single crochet stitches from the previous round (this creates the knit-look aka waistcoat stitch)
Round 2-4: SC each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 5: SC in first 30 stitches with purple yarn, join in white and make the next SC in white,(carry your purple yarn as you are making the white stitches), SC in remaining stitches in purple, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 6: SC in first 29 stitches, SC in next 3 with white, SC in remaining stitches with purple, join, chain 1
Round 6: SC in first 28 stitches, SC in next 5 with white, SC in remaining stitches with purple, join, chain 1
Round 7: SC in first 27 stitches, SC in next 7 with white, SC in remaining stitches with purple, join, chain 1
Round 8-9: SC in first 26 stitches, SC in next 9 with white, SC in remaining stitches with purple, join, chain 1
Round 10-11: SC in first 26 stitches, SC in next 4 with white, make one SC in purple, SC in the next 4 with white, SC in remaining stitches with purple, join, chain 1
Round 12: SC in first 27 stitches, SC in next 2 with white, SC in next 3 with purple, SC in the next 2 with white, SC in remaining stitches with purple, join, chain 1
Round 13-28: SC each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail after round 28.

Feel free to also use the graph bellow to help place the heart stitches.

Crochet Snow-Speckled Hat

January 6, 2022

Recently I was browsing the Yarnspirations.com website, looking for some cute winter crochet patterns and stumbled upon this adorable Snow-Speckled Hat! Only problem was that it was a knit pattern… and.. well.. I don’t knit (yet!) So I contacted my friends over at Yarnspirations headquarters and asked them if I could come up with a crochet version and they said yes!

With just a slight change in placement of your basic single crochet stitch, you can achieve a knit-look (waistcoast stitch) that creates that these adorable little snow-speckles throughout the hat. You will need to do a little bit of color changing but the pattern is repetitive and has no increases or decreases so there is no need to count stitches on the main body of the hat. I also think the the little “v” snow-speckles look like tiny hearts! So of course I will need to crochet a valentine version as well 🙂

I will do my best to give you a few different sizes (coming soon) but the main pattern is pretty much a one-size-fits-most. You should be able to make the pattern bigger/smaller by adding/subtracting 4 stitches (or multiples of 4) to your starting round. This also means that you will need to subtract rows from the ribbing.

I also created a video tutorial to accompany the written pattern:

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors
Aruba Seas (turquoise)
Blue
White
Shop all the colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Large Pom-Pom Maker (optional)
or grab THESE furry pom-poms

NOTE: The pattern works from the bottom up. We will start with the ribbing and then work in rounds. It must start this way for the snow-speckles to look like they are falling in a “v” shape. If we worked from the top down, they will be upside down… believe me… there was a lot of trial and error on my part LOL!

Crochet Snow-Speckled Hat Pattern:
One-Size-Fits-Most

Starting with Ribbing (Brim of Hat)
With turquoise yarn
Chain 9, HDC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (8 HDC)
Row 2-48: in back loops only, HDC in each stitch, chain 1, turn
slip stitch both ends of the ribbing together and SC around the edge of the ribbing with a total stitch count of 64 STITCHES.
Now join in blue yarn and chain 1
NOTE: from here on out you will be working in the front center of the single crochet stitches from the previous round (this creates the knit-look aka waistcoat stitch)
Round 2-3: with blue yarn, SC each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 4: SC in first 3 stitches with blue yarn, join in white and make the next SC in white, (carry your yarn as you crochet for this row), 3 SC in blue, SC in next stitch in white, repeating all the way around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 5: with just blue yarn, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
this next round will be just like round 4 but we want to stagger the white speckles so you will start with just one blue stitch and then your next stitch will be white, then go back to the 3 SC in blue, 1 SC in white sequence.
Round 6: SC the first stitch in blue, SC the next stitch in white, *3 SC in blue, SC in white, repeat from * until you reach the end. You will only have 2 blue stitches at the end, join, chain 1
Round 7: with blue yarn, SC each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Repeat rounds 4-7 a total of 3 more times.
Round 20: with blue yarn, SC each stitch around, join in white yarn, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 21-28: with white yarn, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Fasten off leaving long tail after round 28.

with your long tail and tapestry needle, work needle under the front loops of your last round, keep weaving your tapestry needle under the front loops until end of round and pull to cinch top of hat closed. You will need to weave your strand back and forth a few more times once cinched to completely close the hole in the top.

Add large white pom-pom to the top of the hat!

UPDATE: Here is a child size using Red Heart Super Yarn in Light Raspberry and Shocking Pink.

Crochet Snow-Speckled Hat Pattern:
Child Size

Starting with Ribbing (Brim of Hat)
With light pink yarn
Chain 7, HDC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (6 HDC)
Row 2-40: in back loops only, HDC in each stitch, chain 1, turn
slip stitch both ends of the ribbing together and SC around the edge of the ribbing with a total stitch count of 60 STITCHES.
Now join in dark pink yarn and chain 1
NOTE: from here on out you will be working in the front center of the single crochet stitches from the previous round (this creates the knit-look aka waistcoat stitch)
Round 2-3: with dark pink yarn, SC each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 4: SC in first 3 stitches with dark pink yarn, join in white and make the next SC in white, (carry your yarn as you crochet for this row), 3 SC in dark pink, SC in next stitch in white, repeating all the way around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 5: with just dark pink yarn, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
this next round will be just like round 4 but we want to stagger the white speckles so you will start with just one dark pink stitch and then your next stitch will be white, then go back to the 3 SC in dark pink, 1 SC in white sequence.
Round 6: SC the first stitch in dark pink, SC the next stitch in white, *3 SC in dark pink, SC in white, repeat from * until you reach the end. You will only have 2 dark pink stitches at the end, join, chain 1
Round 7: with dark pink yarn, SC each stitch around, join, chain 1 (64 SC)
Repeat rounds 4-7 a total of 2 more times.
Round 16: repeat round 4
Round 17-18: with dark pink yarn, SC each stitch around, chain 1 (64 SC)
Round 19-26: with white yarn, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Fasten off leaving long tail after round 26.

with your long tail and tapestry needle, work needle under the front loops of your last round, keep weaving your tapestry needle under the front loops until end of round and pull to cinch top of hat closed. You will need to weave your strand back and forth a few more times once cinched to completely close the hole in the top.

Add large white pom-pom to the top of the hat!

Below is what the inside of the hat looks like. I had a few requests to see the inside of the hat!

This is what the inside of the hat looks like!

As I mentioned earlier, this hat is a one-size-fits-most! Below is a terrible selfie photo of me wearing the hat and then a much more adorable picture of my daughter Zoe (age 8) wearing the same exact hat! The brim has a ton of stretch and you can even continue rows of the main hat pattern to make it taller if needed.

More sizes and colors coming soon!

Crochet Santa Style Hats and December Projects

December 30, 2021

I hope everyone had a wonderful December and had the chance to get a little more festive this year! My family and I celebrated and wore these Santa Style hats to all of our Christmas and holiday events! You may have seen me post a different version over the past few weeks but I thought I would pop this post on the blog with a few new pictures to close out the month and holiday season. I’m looking forward to a new year of crochet with all of you and really appreciate all of your support over the years. Crocheting brings me so much joy and I love sharing all of my creations with you!

The classic Santa Hat is a must make!
GET THE SANTA HAT PATTERN HERE

I adore Gingerbread themed everything during the holiday season so this hat was perfect for me!
GET THE GINGERBREAD HAT PATTERN HERE

After I made the Gingerbread hat, I had many requests for a Snowman version!
GET THE SNOWMAN HAT HERE

Change colors is easy! Let me walk you through the process with this Candy Cane Striped Hat!
GET THE CANDY CANE (aka ELF) HAT HERE

I also hosted a fun Crochet-Along with my friends at Yarnspirations this month! I showed you step-by-step how to make this adorable Crochet Owl using Bernat Blanket O’Go Yarn! It’s not too late to make one or the whole flock. You can get the free (3-part) pattern HERE on Yarnpsirations.com. Video tutorials are also available!

I also made a few fun accessories for Ollie the O’Go Owl which you can find HERE

I’ve been spending a lot of quality time with the family this past week and my oldest son and I just completed this One Million Dollar Puzzle! This will come easy to those of you who have an eye for color! Complete the puzzle, scan the QR code, and you can win anywhere from 25 cents to 1 million! We won 25 cents 😊 You can purchase the puzzle HERE on Amazon.

We also took a trip to Flagstaff, Arizona (it’s only 2 hours from our new house in Phoenix!) and fell in love with the town! I felt like I was in a scene from a Hallmark Movie! Zoe and I popped into this adorable bookshop and although we didn’t find Crochet Cute Critters on the shelves, we did find Sutton Fosters new book “Hooked: How Crafting Saved My Life.” Sutton was so sweet to send me a copy herself, but I also recommend downloading the audio version!

Speaking of Crochet Cute Critters, I celebrated a HUGE milestone of book sales this month as well! My publisher notified me earlier this month that Crochet Cute Critters has now sold over 100,000 copies! I am so incredibly proud of this book and your support and love for it has been such a blessing! Thank You! The book now comes in hardcover as well! Get it HERE.

Lastly, I know this project may have slid under the radar with everything else going on, but I created an easy pattern for a Crochet Reindeer and it’s available for free download on Yarnspirations.com! I think it would be fun to crochet all of Santa’s reindeer (just change the nose color!) so it actually might be a good time to get started on this project for next year! You can get the PATTERN HERE.

Thanks for a wonderful 2021 and I will see you all in 2022!

Crochet Candy Cane Santa Style Hat

December 14, 2021

Here is another Santa style hat to add to the mix! This ease stripes make the perfect Candy Cane Crochet Hat! Or switch up the colors and make green/white stripes or green/red stripes for an elf hat. Truly so many ways to customize this design. Be sure to also check out the Gingerbread and Snowman versions I’ve posted previously!

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Cherry Red and White (you will need less than one skein each). Shop the colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Large Pom-Pom Maker (optional)
– Tapestry Needle

NOTE: ALL HAT SIZES START THE SAME WAY. You will begin with the long hat tail.  Also, some hats will end up with a white brim and some will end up with a red brim because of the row count and the alternating of colors every two rounds. You can choose to start your pattern with either red or white… so if you are looking at the 3-6 month size pattern (for instance) and decide you don’t want a red brim at the end, choose to start with red instead of white.

NOTE: I’ve found that the “child/teen” size (the one with the 60 stitch count) fits the majority of people! I can wear it. All of my kids can wear it (ages 8, 10, and 12), and I’ve gifted it two adults (male and female) and it fit them perfectly as well!

ONE MORE NOTE: Do not fasten off yarn in-between stripes. You can easily leave your yarn attached and pull it up from previous rows when needed. Picture below is what the inside of your hat should look like when you pull the yarn up.

Beginning of Hat:
With white yarn
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 6 DC in ring, pull tight, join, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (9 DC)

Crochet Snowman Santa Style Hat

December 10, 2021

After I posted my Gingerbread version of the Santa Style Hat (SEE IT HERE), I had a few requests for a Snowman Style Santa hat. Ask and you shall receive! I actually think these colors would be perfect for a gnome hat as well. My intention was for the snowman to look like it was wearing a hat with a brim and the red is the scarf. Lots of ways to change up the basic Santa hat pattern and I actually have a few more designs on my hook because of course my whole family needs a holiday hat!

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Turqua, Real Teal, White, Red, and Orange. Shop these colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Two 1 inch black buttons (or smaller)
– Tapestry Needle
– Large Pom-Pom Maker (optional)

NOTE: ALL HAT SIZES START THE SAME WAY. You will begin with the long hat tail. IF you want the tail shorter/longer you can decrease/increase the amount of continuous rows.

NOTE: I’ve found that the “child/teen” size (the one with the 60 stitch count) fits the majority of people! I can wear it. All of my kids can wear it (ages 8, 10, and 12), and I’ve gifted it two adults (male and female) and it fit them perfectly as well!

Beginning of Hat:
With light blue yarn
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 6 DC in ring, pull tight, join, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (9 DC)
Round 3: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (9 DC)
Round 4: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 5: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (12 DC)
Round 6: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 7: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (15 DC)
Round 8: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 9: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (18 DC)
Round 10: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next 5, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 11: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (21 DC)

If you want to double up the eyes to make them more sturdy and to hide the safety eye, make a solid color piece using the same pattern (green for frog or red circle for crab) and then stitch the eyeball eye piece and the solid eyes piece together.

NOTE: if you don’t want to use safety eyes start eye pattern using black yarn, switch to a round of white for Round 2 and then Round 3 will remain the same using the main hat color.

Rd 5: SC in each stitch around (8 SC)Do not fasten off.

Now you are going to connect the two claws. Begin to SC where you left off in big claw to begin attaching them. SC all the way around both claws. You should have 18 Single crochets but don’t worry if your stitch count is off. It really doesn’t matter

Rd 2: SC around (18 SC)
Rd 3: SC decrease in each stitch around
Rd 4-6: SC in each stitch around (9 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat.

Crochet Mini Holiday Hats

December 3, 2020

Here is a cute and quick holiday project that you can make in less than 30 minutes! These Mini Holiday Hats can be crocheted in many different color combinations and you can even stitch on a little face to create a gingerbread or snowman version. I personally love the candy cane stripes! Use them as ornaments, gift toppers, gift card holders, string them as garland, and they also fit perfectly over Marshmallow Mugs!

Can you believe that this pattern was already on my blog disguised as a Tiny Crochet Elf Hat?! You can see that project HERE. I just tweaked the pattern a bit at the end and will repost the new version below.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Red and White (for Santa) and any other colors you need/want for your other hats! Shop Red Heart Super Saver Yarn HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Tiny pom-poms (optional) for face embellishments. I used a Hot Glue Gun to attach the faces on the Snowman and Gingerbread Man Hats

Crochet Icing on the Cupcake Hat

October 7, 2020

Want to add a little icing to a cupcake hat?! I’ve got a quick little pattern here for you! I debuted this technique this past Saturday in an online Michaels Craft Store Virtual Classroom. If you missed it, don’t worry, you can watch the playback video HERE!

As promised, I am posting the pattern for the icing below. The crochet icing works up in just a few rounds and looks kinda like an octopus when laid flat but when you set it onto of the hat, it looks like icing drippings!

I am using Caron Swirl Cakes for the Crochet Cozy Bobbles Hat and then I created the pom-pom and icing with a deconstructed ball of Caron Chunky Cakes in color Trifle. You can shop Caron Cake Yarn HERE on Michaels.com!

Crocheting Icing Pattern:
Materials:
– Size H Hook (or larger)
– Caron Chunky Cakes (or any bulky or worsted weight yarn would work too)

Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 12 DC in ring, join, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join (24 DC)

Now lets make the drips

chain 6, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch along round 2 and join with slip stitch

chain 5, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch to join,

chain 4, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 7, DC in 3d chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 5, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 4, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 6, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 4, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 5, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

Crochet Cluster V-Stitch Hat with Bernat POP! Yarn

May 25, 2020

With a ball of Bernat Pop! Yarn, you can make at least two Crochet Cluster V-Stitch Hats! I love this particular color called “POP ART” which has an adorable neon/spring rainbow colo way. No sense in buying multiple skeins of (red, orange, yellow, green, blue) yarn, all the colors you need are right here! I decided to deconstruct the ball before crocheting with it. This means that I separated the colors and crocheted with them as needed so I could get perfect rows of color.

SHOP Bernat Pop! YARN HERE on Yarnspirations.com

I am using the cluster v-stitch for the main part of the hat. This is basically the same pattern as my Messy Bun Hats, except you won’t have a hole at the top and I changed the brim a bit. You can find my Messy Bun Hats HERE.

The cluster v-stitch works up super fast and you can make these hats in no time at all! This hat comes in 3 sizes: Large, Medium, and Small. The Large fits a teen/adult, the medium is for an older child, and the small is a younger child. You can easily adjust the hook size, tension, and even yarn thickness (if you choose a different yarn) to create different sizes if desired.

Hat sizes when laid flat: (not including pom)
Large: 10 inches wide x 9 inches tall
Medium: 8.75 inches wide x 8 inches tall
Small: 7.5 inches wide x 7 inches tall
Doll: 5 inches wide x 4 inches tall

I have made a video tutorial for you explaining the v-stitch and how to make all the increase rows of the medium size hat. I will also walk you through the ribbed edging.

– Bernat Pop! Yarn in color POP ART. Shop all colors of Bernat Pop! HERE On Yarnspirations.com.

Easy Crochet Santa Hat

November 19, 2019

Every year I always find myself (and my kids/family/friends) needing and requesting a Santa hat for all the November and December festivities. This year I finally wrote down a quick and easy Santa hat pattern! You could make it in a variety of colors or just stick with classic red. The main part of the hat is made with worsted weight yarn. I used Bernat Super Value but Red Heart Super Saver would be a good choice too. The brim is made with Bernat Softee Chunky which is a bulky yarn and makes a perfectly puffy brim. I also used the HDC in the third loop which gives the brim a nice ribbed/knit look! It’s actually a very simple technique and I will walk you through it in the video below.

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value in Berry Red (one skein)
– Bernat Softee Chunky in White (one skein)
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Clover Pom-Pom Maker size Large (optional)

NOTE: ALL HATS START THE SAME WAY. You will begin with the long hat tail. IF you want the tail shorter/longer you can decrease/increase the amount of continuous rows.

NOTE: I’ve found that the “child/teen” size (the one with the 60 stitch count) fits the majority of people! I can wear it. All of my kids can wear it (ages 6, 8, and 10), and I’ve gifted it two adults (male and female) and it fit them perfectly as well!

I mentioned this above… the Child/Teen size fits most! I have made 5 of these hats in that size and they fit so many! Zoe is wearing it in these pictures but it also fits me perfectly. Below you will see my sons teacher and her husband wearing that size as well!

With main hat color, attach yarn and SC around the entire bottom edge of the hat (including earflaps). Fasten off and weave in ends.

Braided Tails: Cut 6 long strands of the same color yarn you used for the antlers. Pull yarn halfway through last loop of the earflaps (you now have 18 strands). Knot, braid, and knot again at the end of your braid. Trim ends of braided tails so yarn is even. Do this for both earflaps.

Row 2-3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 4: SC in first 4 stitches (leave remaining stitches unworked for now), chain 1, turn, SC in 4 stitches, chain 1, turn, SC in 4 stitches, chain 1, turn, SC in 4 stitches and continue to SC down side of first antler pieces until you get back to your main row, SC in 4 stitches of your main row, chain 1, turn

SC in 4 stitches along main row and repeat from * to make the third antler.
When you get back to your main row, SC in last 4 stitches. Fasten off.

Place two antler pieces together and SC edges together. Stuff lightly with poly-fil as you go. Leave end open to stitch onto hat.

Feeling Confused? Don’t worry! I made a video tutorial on how to make the Antler Pieces and sew them onto the hat!

Snout:
Chain 12, DC in 3rd chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain. Make a total of 3 DC in last stitch. Now working on other side of chain, DC in each stitch and make 3 DC in last stitch. Join to first DC, chain 2.
Round 2: (2 DC in first stitch, DC in next stitch)-do that 4 times, 2 DC in next 3 stitches, (2 DC in first stitch, DC in next stitch)- do that 4 times, 2 DC in last 4 stitches. Join to first DC. (38 DC)

Crochet Llama Hat

August 28, 2018

Earlier this week I posted a cute and fuzzy Crochet Monster Blanket using the new Bernat Pipsqueak Stripes yarn. I had a little bit left over and loved the turquoise part of the color “playdate” so I used it to make a Llama Hat! I only had enough for 0-3month size so yuou may want to stick with the original Bernat Pipsqueak yarn that comes in solid shades (shop all colors HERE). And if Pipsqueak yarn is just too intimidating for you, you can always make this hat in any worsted weight yarn!

Materials:
– Bernat Pipsqueak Yarn (1 skein of the solid color). Shop all colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Caron Simply Soft yarn in White and Black. Shop HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook for the hat
– Size G Crochet Hook for the facial features
– Tapestry Needle

Note: For bigger sizes, you will want to use an H hook for the facial features and I also suggest a bulkier yarn like Bernat Super Value.

Tips for working with Pipsqueak yarn: Keep your stitches loose and run your fingers along the previous stitches to figure out where the next will go. You can actually pretty easily feel for where the tops of each stitch are. You could actually pop your finger through a space under the stitch. So the place where you finger pops through is where you make your next stitch! Easy!

Crochet Minion Hat Kit

March 25, 2018

Great News!! The Crochet Minion Hat Pattern is BACK! But let me first explain exactly what happened to my original Minion Hat Pattern. Around the time Minions became popular I created a Minion Hat Pattern and posted it for free on my blog. It quickly become one of my most popular posts! I was happy, you were happy 🙂

Then something happened. I received a cease and desist letter from Universal Studios for the immediate removal of my crochet Minion hat from my blog. Totally understandable. It is a copyrighted image and property of NBC Universal. This was a hard lesson for me but I am so happy that they allowed me the chance to correct my mistake.

Then something else happened. A little less than a year ago, the craft education company Craftsy was acquired by NBC Universal and obtained the licensing for the Despicable Me movie characters. They wanted to buy my Minion Hat Pattern and re-publish it!

This is the absolute best scenario I could think of. I felt so bad that this pattern was just sitting here on my computer and nobody had access to it. Now Craftsy was able to use the pattern and allow crocheters to get their hands on it again!

The Crochet Minion Hat is now being sold as kit! This means not only will you get the printed pattern in sizes Preschool – Adult, you will get the yarn, and video tutorials!

With the Craftsy Crochet Minion Hat Pattern Kit you will receive:

  • Printed pattern included with your supplies
  • Downloadable PDF pattern
  • Getting Gauge: The First Step Toward Stitching Success downloadable eGuide
  • Video tips and tutorial
  • 5 skeins of yarn: 1 each Sunshine Yellow, Chocolate, White, Black and Misty Blue.
  • Downloadable PDF pattern
  • Video tips and tutorial

The Minion Pattern is written by me and this is the same one that appeared previously on my blog with just a few tweaks and updates to make it more clear. The video tutorial was filmed by my friend Tamara Kelly from Moogly Blog!

You can purchase the Crochet Minion Hat Kit HERE

Thank you for all of your support and patience regarding the Minion Hat! I hope you are as pleased as I am that the pattern is now available again! If you do purchase the kit and make the hat please be sure to tag #RepeatCrafterMe and #Craftsy on social media!

Crochet Cactus Hat

February 13, 2018

Can’t resist a cute cactus! Especially when it’s in the form of a crochet hat and worn on my daughters head 🙂 All things cactus are very trendy right now. I recently purchased an adorable cactus crochet hook and it inspired me to crochet a cactus hat! The one shown is child size but I’m posting sizing info below so you can adjust and make this had bigger or smaller.

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value yarn in Lush Green (main hat), Deep Sea Green (the prickles), Pumpkin (the brim/earflaps), and Magenta (flower). Shop all colors HERE at Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook. Purchase the Cactus Crochet Hook from The Clay Bean Co Facebook Page.
– Tapestry needle

The main part of the hat (the green cactus) is worked in a long strip and then stitched together to created a tube. My strip is 18 inches in length and fits around my 4.5 year old daughters head (with room to grow). The length of your strip will depend on the person you are making it for.  The sizing chart is below!

Hat Sizing (the length of your main hat strip):
Newborn: 12 inches
3-6 Months: 13-14 inches
6-9 Months: 15 inches
9-12 Months: 15.5 inches
12-18 Months: 16 inches
18-24 Months: 17 inches
Preschooler: 17-18 inches
Child: 18-19 inches
Teen: 19-20
Adult: 21-22 inches

You can also make the hat taller or shorter by adding or subtracting a few chains from your starting chain and/or adding rows to the bottom rounds (the orange part).

Cactus Hat Pattern:
With Lush Green Yarn
Chain 36, HDC in 3rd chain from hook and rest of the way down, chain 2, turn
Row 2-36 (or more or less rows to obtain length): HDC in back loops only of each stitch, chain 2, turn. (34 HDC)
Fasten off laving long tail

Sew together edges to make a tube. Work tapestry needle under the tops of the HDC stitches.

Now you are going to want to stitch up top of hat so it cinches together. Continuing with your tapestry needle and long yarn tail, weave needle under top of edge and then pull tight when you get all the way around. Video below should help!

Join green yarn to bottom edge (anywhere), SC evenly along bottom edge all the way around (approx 58 stitches for the child size hat). Number of stitches doesn’t really matter. Just try to stitch around as evenly as possible.

Change to orange yarn, SC in each stitch around for a total of 3 rows, don’t fasten off, start on earflaps as written below.

Earflap Pattern:

Earflaps for Newborn – Preschooler
Earflap 1:
Chain 1, SC in next 10, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn

Row 5: SC across ( 6 SC)

Row 7: SC across (4 SC)
Row 8: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends

Second earflap placement: Fold hat in half leaving slightly more stitches in the front of the hat than the back. Place the second earflap to line up with the first earflap (Refer to earflap placement from the pictures available at the end of my puppy hat pattern).

Earflap 2:
Join yarn, chain 1, SC in next 10, chain 1, turn

Row 9: SC across (4 SC)
Row 10: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 11: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends

Second earflap placement: Fold hat in half leaving slightly more stitches in the front of the hat than the back. Place the second earflap to line up with the first earflap (Refer to earflap placement from the pictures available at the end of my puppy hat pattern).

Earflap 2:

Join yarn, chain 1, SC in next 12, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 8, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC across (10 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC across (8 SC)

Row 8: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC across (4 SC)
Row 10: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 11: SC decrease, and continue to SC around hat and earflaps and fasten off when you get the entire way around and weave in ends.

Braided Tails:
Cut six 18 inch strands of orange yarn.
Pass halfway through last space in earflap. You should now have 12 strands to braid with.
Make knot and braid approx 5.5 inches long, knot, trim ends.

Flower pattern:
With pink yarn
Magic Ring, chain 2 in ring, make 6 DC in ring, pull tight, join to first DC, chain 3.

Round 2: 2 DC in same stitch as your chain 3, Chain 3 and slip stitch in the same stitch as your first chain 3 and 2 DC’s, Chain 3, 2 DC in next stitch, Chain 3 and sl st in same stitch, repeat around.
So you should have *Chain 3, 2 DC, Chain 3* in each stitch all the way around making 6 petals.
Fasten off and weave in all ends but one long one to sew onto the top your hat.
Prickles:
Cut about a 6 inch strand of dark green yarn. Fold in half and pass through any random stitch (prickles should be placed sporadically). Loop ends through and trim!

Crochet Santa Hat with Bernat Blanket Yarn

November 9, 2017

What?! Only 46 days left until Christmas?! Do not panic, this is plenty of time to still get a few holiday crochet projects on your hook! And this Santa hat is so super easy and quick to work up! Seriously, I spent about an hour on this thanks to the thick and chunky Bernat Blanket yarn and an easy-to-follow pattern from Yarnspirations. You could easily make a set of matching hats for the whole family!! With two big skeins of Bernat Blanket Yarn in Red and White, you could make get many hats! I purchased the Red yarn from the Bernat Blanket Brights line, and the White yarn from the Bernat Baby Blanket line.

This may look like a bobble stitch but it’s actually just a Triple Crochet that pops out once you alternate it with a SC. Love the look!

This Santa Hat is one of many holiday crochet projects you will find in the Yarnspirations new Dear Santa Gift Guide! The Santa hat is included in the pattern for the Santa Snuggle Sack. Click on “View Pattern” for the Dear Santa Crochet Sack and scroll to the end of the pattern PDF where you will see the Hat Pattern listed! Get the free crochet Santa Hat Pattern HERE.

If you are feeling ambitious, make both the crochet sack and the hat! This would be the most comfy set to cozy up with on Christmas Eve.

Be sure to check out all the other fun patterns that would be great gift for kids and adults! View the entire Yarnspirations Dear Santa Gift Guide HERE.

If you missed my cute little crochet Gingerbread Man pattern (that Zoe is holding in the photo above) you can find it HERE. Another quick and easy Christmas pattern for you to add to your to-do list!

Crochet Monkey Hat Pattern

March 21, 2017

MonkeyHat1_1

This Crochet Monkey Hat was made almost 3.5 years ago!! You see the little baby in the photo below? Yep, that is my sweet Zoe! Just for reference, she is going to be 4 years old this summer 🙂 I’ve been so incredibly anxious to share this pattern with you. The delay was because this project was originally supposed to be part of a crochet kit but unfortunately the kit never was published (you can read more about that HERE). But the good news is that I can now share it right here for free on my blog!

The Crochet Kit That Never Happened

March 18, 2017

I having some bittersweet news… more sweet than bitter so keep reading 🙂 Over 3 years ago, I was contacted by Horizon Group (they are the parent company of the fabulous CraftProjectIdeas.com with craft products throughout Walmart Stores) and they commissioned me for an exciting project. I created 6 detailed crochet patterns that were to be compiled into a Crochet Kit complete with yarn and hook and all the accessories needed to make each project. Zoe was only 3 months old at the time and even though I had just become a mom of 3 and had my hands full with an infant, 2 year old, and 4 year old, I used every spare minute to multi-task and work on this project. I was especially motivated because this was my first opportunity for a published book! Once everything had been completed and sent over to Horizon Group, I waited. And waited. And waited. Months passed. Then a year passed. I sent a follow up e-mail. News came back that they were waiting for the crochet kit to be picked up by retail stores. Now after several years, I just got the word that unfortunately after much effort, it won’t be picked up by retail at all 🙁 BUT that means that I get to post all the projects right here on my blog for free! And that makes me happy! And I hope that makes you happy too!

Below is a sneak peek at all the free crochet patterns you can expect to see posted on my blog over the next few weeks!

Crochet Leprechaun Hat Headband

March 2, 2017

LepHeadband1

I have to give credit to my husband for this one! After I made the Cat in the Hat Headband, he said I should make a St. Patrick’s Day version. An hour later this Crochet Leprechaun Hat Headband was hot off my hook! Pretty much the same tutorial as the Cat in the Hat Headband (see it HERE) but I am posting the updated pattern below.

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value yarn in Green, Black, and Yellow. Shop all colors at Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Headband (I used Goody brand). Target, Dollar Tree, and Walmart, are a few of the many stores that carry headbands. I used THESE ONES.
– Poly-fil fiber stuffing
– Tapestry Needle
– Hot Glue Gun

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring
SC = Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
DC = Double Crochet
