The Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick line has always been my go-to when I need chunky yarn that works up fast. So easy to crochet with and the texture is perfect. Recently I discovered the variegated color Hudson Bay and it is beyond fabulous! Look at the beautiful colorway. The colors pool together so nicely, it’s gender neutral, soft, super bulky, and a great yarn for beginners. Plus it is available in many craft stores, online, and I’ve even seen it heavily discounted at Walmart. I couldn’t wait to get it on my hook and make something for my daughter. The Hudson Hat is a chunky beanie with a ribbed brim with matching mittens to complete the set!

You are going to crochet a long strip. The rows will consist of SC stitch that will be worked in the front loops only. You can choose to have your ribbed strip go around the entire edge of the hat, or you can leave a space in the back that allows for the hat to slouch down (I recommend this).
Row 2: in front loops only, SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 3- as long/short as you need: repeat row 2.
I made 26 rows for the preschooler hat. You will want to line up your ribbed strip to the hat as you are crocheting to see how long/short it needs to be.
Cut 3 long strands of yarn, loop thru corner edge of ribbed brim. Braid or twist strands to make braided tails on either side of hat.
Round 2: 2 DC in first, DC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (15 DC)
Round 3: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (15 DC)
Round 5: DC in each stitch around (including 3 DC in the chain 3 space), join, fasten off and weave in ends.Thumb:
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 6 DC in ring, join, chain 2
Round 2: DC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving long tail.
Sew thumb into hole on mitten created by the chain 3 space.Mitten Ribbing:
Just like the hat pattern you will create a ribbed strip and sew it onto the edge of the mitten.
Chain 4, SC in second chain from hook, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch in front loops only (3 SC)
Row 3-10 (or as long/short as you’d like): repeat row 2.
Need larger mittens? Easy-peasy! Increase the pattern after round 3. So the next Row would be 2 DC in first, DC in next the next 2, repeat around for a total of 20 DC. Even bigger?! The round after that would look like this: 2 DC in first, DC in next 3 (25 DC). Crochet in each stitch around until the mitten is the length you want. Remember to chain 3 and skip 3 at about round 5 to make your thumb hole.
Thumbs can be increased in sized by making 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next after magic ring round for a total of 9 DC.
Need a size smaller for a baby? Do not increase after Magic Ring round. DC in each stitch around for a total of 10 DC. Make your thumb hole on round 3.
