Crochet Reindeer Antlers Pattern

November 12, 2013

Last year I posted a crochet Rudolph the Reindeer hat pattern (pattern HERE) which was embellished with felt eyes and antlers. Although I absolutely love the look of the felt pieces, the antlers don’t really stand up and I’ve had a lot of requests for crocheted versions of these parts. So here ya go!

I actually experimented doing the antlers a couple different ways, but this way was the quickest and easiest so this is the one I’m sharing 🙂

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in chocolate brown.
– Size G6 (5.5mm) hook
– Poly-fil stuffing
– Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
TC = Triple Crochet

Antler Pattern:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 9 SC inside magic ring. pull tight and continue to crochet in rounds
Rd 2-14: SC in each stitch around (9 SC)
Feel free to make this part longer if needed by continuing to SC in rounds.
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat. Stuff with poly-fil.

Now make a second piece just like the first but stop after 4 rounds.

Using your tapestry needle, stitch the smaller part on the larger piece.
Now you can stitch it onto the top your hat between the ears.
If you also want to make crocheted eyes instead of felt, here is the pattern for that.
Crochet eye:
Using white worsted weight yarn…
Magic ring, make 10 HDC in ring, join to first HDC, chain 1.
Rd 2: HDC in first 5 stitches, 2 DC in next 2 stitches, 2 TC in next stitch, 2 DC in next, 2 HDC in last stitch, join.
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat.
Crochet eyeball:
Using black worsted weight yarn…
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 HDC in ring, join to first HDC.
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto the white part of the eye.
So now you have two options! Rudolph with felt accents or a completely crocheted Rudolph!

    I made the hat for my grandson but I put pipe cleaners around the shape of the horns and it stayed up very well.

    Thanks for the pattern.

    Hi! FOr this pattern you have a G6 hook, but in parenthesis you put 5.5 mm which is an I hook….should we use the smaller hook or the larger one? THanks!!

    I can't get the antlers to stand up without falling over when I put the hat on. Any ideas?

    I love this pattern and just crocheted 2 of the bodies of the hat–which antler do you think works best crochet or felt?

    So cute!! It says to use G6 (5.5 mm). All I have is I/9 5.5 or G/6 4.25?

    When I made the white part of the eyes I had to use an I hook because otherwise they came out way too small. I haven't done the antlers yet but I'm sure you would want to use the smaller G hook for those. You might want to check your instructions on this. That said I love this pattern and so glad you came up with one that used all crochet. You have so many wonderful patterns and I can't wait to try them all 🙂 Thank you for sharing these with us for free.

    I have an alternate pattern for the antlers if you are interested.

    ch 10, sl st in the 2nd chain from the hook, sl st the next 4 stitches (should have 3 remaining chains left)
    ch 10 again, sl st in 2nd chain from hook, sl st in next 7 stitches, sl st in 3 remaining chains left

    ch 2, working on other side of ch, hdc in each ch around shape, working 5 hdc in antler tips. Finish off and weave in ends

    just thought it might be another option in case you don’t want to work the antlers in the round

    I want to make this, but I want to use the felt to do the antlers. I don’t have a scribd account to access the template. Is there a way I can get that template another way?
    I have made many of your lovely patterns! Thank you so much!!
