Crochet Valentine Hat Pattern

January 4, 2014

Almost exactly 2 years ago I made THIS VALENTINE’S HAT and gave it away on my blog in celebration of reaching 100 Facebook fans… I can’t believe that today there are over 63,000 of you following my Repeat Crafter Me Facebook Page! WOW! This totally blows me away. Thank you for your support! I have had a lot of requests for this pattern and although I didn’t write it down when I first made it, I worked it up again came up a pattern I could share with you!
I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick Yarn for this hat. The red is Cranberry and the white is called Fisherman. It works up quickly and the bulky yarn makes it nice and thick, soft and snuggly. I think you could easily leave off the scalloped edge (replace it with another row of DC) and flower and this would be great for a boy as well.
Materials:
– Super Bulky Yarn like Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick
– Size J (6.00mm) Crochet Hook
– Large tapestry needle
– Favorite Findings Wooden Heart Button
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
Note: If you want the hat even smaller, follow the 0-3 month pattern but stop increasing after round 3. Continue to DC in each stitch around until you have made 6 rows. The 7th row will be your scalloped edge.

Size: 0-3 Months
starting with red yarn…

Magic ring, chain 2, DC 10 in magic ring, join to first DC, ch 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join, ch 2 (20 DC)
Round 3: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, around, join, ch 2. (30 DC)
Round 4: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next four, join, ch 2 (36 DC)
Round 5-7: DC in each stitch around, join, ch 2 (36 DC) – change color to white for round 7

Now you are going to make the shell edge…

Round 8: Make 4 DC in the same stitch as your chain 2, skip 2 stitches, SC, skip 2 stitches, *make 5 DC’s all in one stitch, skip 2 stitches, SC, skip 2 stitches, repeat from * the rest of the way around. Note: Since you probably won’t end on an even amount of scallops, just fudge it 🙂 For instance, at the end of the 0-3month size, I skipped 2, added one more DC to my first scallop and joined to the first DC in that scallop.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Size: 3-6 Months
starting with red yarn…
Magic ring, chain 2, DC 10 in magic ring, join to first DC, ch 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join, ch 2 (20 DC)

Round 4: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next two, join, ch 2 (40 DC)
Round 5-8: DC in each stitch around, join, ch 2 (40 DC) – change color to white for round 8
Round 9: Make 4 DC in the same stitch as your chain 2, skip 2 stitches, SC, skip 2 stitches, *make 5 DC’s all in one stitch, skip 2 stitches, SC, skip 2 stitches, repeat from * the rest of the way around. Note: Since you probably won’t end on an even amount of scallops, just fudge it 🙂 For instance, at the end of the 0-3month size, I skipped 2, added one more DC to my first scallop and joined to the first DC in that scallop.

Flower:

starting with red yarn…

Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 HDC in ring, join and change color to white.
Round 2: Chain 2, DC in same stitch as ch 2, DC in next stitch, Chain 2 and slip stitch in the same stitch as your last DC, *Chain 2, DC in next stitch, DC in next stitch, Chain 2 and slip stitch in the same stitch as your last DC. Repeat from * around. Fasten off leaving tail to sew onto hat, or weave in ends and add a clip to make it removable.
OR
You can make the flower in all white and then create a red circle for the middle and sew it on top. I like the cleaner look of this flower but you may prefer the method above. To make a circle, Magic ring, ch 1, make 10 SC in ring, join to first SC, fasten off and sew onto center of flower.
I found my wooden heart buttons at Jo-Ann Fabrics.
You can purchase a package of 6 HERE
Enjoy!

    I too am having a problem with size. I've used your patterns before without trouble. For some reason; I'm making the chill size, & have finished the increase rows & am working even rows before scallop. The hat is already big.. Like adult size.. Please help 🙂

      Hmmm… I'm wondering if it is because of the super bulky yarn. Are you using the same yarn I did? I am thinking other brands may be even bulkier causing the hat to turn out bigger? This is actually the same pattern as my polar bear hat (scallop replaced last row) and that seemed to work out perfectly, so maybe try and make one row less and go down a size. I will make note of this in the blog post and try and edit the pattern a bit if I see others are struggling too! Thanks so much for the feedback!!

      Sorry, for the late response.. It's been some crazy weather here & my kids have been out of school – so crazy days for me! LOL… Anyway.. I re-started and made the preschooler size. Used the same exact yarn & hook size & it still turn out big. I even made sure to crochet tighter than I normally do. I usually crochet tight anyway. The hat fits my 4 year old (she'll be 5 the end of this month) very big. It fits my 8 year old perfectly though. (Needless to say, she's uber happy about that!)
      Let me know what you think, or ideas you have on how to fix this size thing 🙂 I absolutely love your patterns! I wouldn't mind being a "pattern tester".. lol

    🙂 I have one silly question, can we use the same pattern for boys ( without flower) or do you recommend any other changes.

      Personally, I wouldn't scallop the edge, either – I will probably do two rows of white at the bottom. Somewhere I saw cute little truck appliques – that would be really adorable on a boy's hat!

    First, I want to thank you for all the adorable projects and free patterns. I am also having a problem with size. I made the preschooler size and it fit an adult. I'm using the exact same yarns, hook and follow the pattern as it is written. I actually took it apart twice and had the same problem….any ideas?

      Use a smaller hook! Everyone crochets at different tensions. I know, after years of stitching, I usually need to use one hook size smaller than what they call for in the pattern because I have a loose tension.

    I made a light-weight cotton newborn cap in pink/white with your easy heart applique'. Size F hook for all, added the heart above first/last scallop to be sure it is worn on the side 🙂

    Please help i've never crocheted before (I'm using YouTube videos to figure out stitches) what does 'around' mean in row 3? Do I just do 1dc in each stitch until I've done 30 including the first 2DC's?
    Thanks
