Crochet Tiger Hat Pattern







This tiger hat was a lot of fun to make because all I had to do was combined three of my older patterns! I used the Zebra Hat pattern for the base of the hat, ears from my Polar Bear pattern and face from my Dalmation Dog. I am very excited about the way it turned out and if you ask me, tigers have been pretty popular this past year due to Katy Perry’s hit song “Roar” and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood on PBS kids. And of course if you root for  a sports team that has a tiger as the mascot, this ones for you! Thanks to my awesome hat model/cute daughter who always gives me big smiles and happily wears my crochet 🙂




Materials:
– Black worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice)
– White worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice)
– Orange worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Terracotta)
– Two .5″ black buttons for eyes
– Crochet hook size H-8 (5.0 mm)
– Tapestry needle


Abbreviations:

ch – chain
sl st- slip stitch
SC – Single Crochet
SC Decrease – Single Crochet Decrease
DC – Double Crochet

Newborn size: Follow directions for 0-3 months using a smaller hook (G6/4.00MM). End with 11 rounds instead of 12.


Size: 0-3 Months
Starting with orange yarn

Magic ring, 11 DC in magic ring, join to first DC
change to black yarn, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each around, join (22 SC)
change to orange yarn, chain 2
Round 3: 2 DC in first, DC in next, repeat around, join (33 DC)
change to black yarn, chain 1
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join (44 SC)
change to orange yarn, chain 2
Round 5: DC in each around, join (44 DC)
change to black yarn, chain 1
Round 6: SC in each around, join (44 SC)
change to orange yarn, chain 2

Braided Tails: Cut six strands of orange and 3 strands of black. Pass through last space in earflap. You should now have 18 strands to braid with. Braid, knot, trim ends.



Note: I used a size G crochet hook for the face elements on my 3-6 month size hat. You may want to use a larger hook with larger hats.

Nose: 
with black yarn…
Chain 5, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the chains, chain 1, turn (4 SC) Row 2: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (4 SC) Row 3: SC decrease two times, continue to SC around edges of the nose. Make 2 SC in the corners. Fasten off leaving long tail to sew on to hat.

Cheeks: make 2
with white yarn…
Magic ring, 5 SC in ring, continue to SC in rounds Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around (10 SC) Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around (15 SC) Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next two, repeat around (20 SC) Fasten off leaving long tail.

First sew on checks so they are almost touching each other. Then sew the nose over the cheeks. 
Then make 3 whiskers on each side with strands of yarn and your tapestry needle.


Eyes: make 2
with white yarn…
Magic ring, chain 2, make 10 DC in ring, join to first DC, fasten off leaving long tail.

Ears: (using H hook)
with black yarn…
Magic ring, chain 2, make 10 DC in ring, join to first DC
change color to orange
Round 2: chain 1, 2 SC in each stitch around, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 3: SC in each stitch around (this causes the ear to curve in).

Sew ears onto hat right at about round 4.

  29. I love your patterns and the hats are so cute. But am I the only one they run small on? I have to use a 6mm to get the sizes to fit the age listed. I use worsted weight yarn (Redheart super saver)

  31. You are so talented. I love all your cute hats. I just finished the tiger hat for my son – his school mascot is a tiger. It’s super cute. This was my first time changing colors on a hat, and I carried the yarn. I don’t like how messy the inside of the hat is from sewing on the face and from changing colors. Is this just to be expected from this kind of hat, or is there a way to make the inside look neater? I’d love some suggestions. Thank you!

  75. It would be really helpful if a gauge (stitches per inch) were to be included in the pattern as many of us don’t have an idea of sizes of kids’ heads.
