If you’ve been following my blog for awhile you may have seen my Button Art (like my Button Owl, Button Penguin, and Candy Corn). I had one more piece of canvas lying around and wanted to make something Spring-y but instead of buttons, I decided to use pony beads! They are cheaper and I already had an abundance of them on hand. I also like that the pony beads are smaller and fit together tighter. This project does take a couple hours but it would be an easy project for older kids and teens.
Materials:
– Canvas art board. Mine is 8×8
– Multi-color Pony Beads. You can find these in bulk at Craftprojectideas.com
– Paint or paint pens/Pencil to draw outline of design
First you will want to find a picture of a butterfly (or whatever animal/shape/object you want) and print it out. I used Google images and searched for “Butterfly Clip Art.”
Use your print out as a template to trace the image onto canvas with a pencil.
Next I used my paint pens to color in the lines. I used paint colors that would coordinate with the beads.
Now get out your hot glue gun and start gluing on your pony beads! I like the way the look when you glue them on sideways (so you don’t see the hole). I recommend outlining each section first and then filling in each section after it has been outlined with beads. I actually enjoyed the monotonous activity of this project. Perfect for a lazy Saturday morning.
When you are finished you might notice a bunch of hot glue strings all over your project.
Take a hair dryer and blow dry it for about 15 seconds. Glue strings will melt away!
I love the texture and the 3-dimensional look of this art. This would be a fun piece for a girls bedroom!

What great advice, to melt away those glue strings… I love my glue gun, but hate the strings and I was always picking them away by hand- that doesn't really work well, I can tell you….
