Crochet Stars and Stripes Lanyard

June 12, 2014

Don’t go to your 4th of your July celebration without this patriotic lanyard. Perfect to carry your keys or other items you don’t have pockets for and don’t want to lose! Great for the kids as well. Attach a glow stick for those late night firework shows. Also great for cheering on the USA in the olympics or other sporting events!
A friend of mine asked me if I could make her a lanyard and I was inspired by this really neat Rainbow Lanyard from Moogly Blog <—check it out!
Materials:
-Worsted weight yarn in Red, White, and Blue
– Size G Crochet Hook
– Tapestry needle
– Key Ring and/or Lanyard Hook
– Breakaway Buckle (optional). I ordered a bunch to use with this project but it turns out that the ones I ordered were super small (only a 1/2 inch) and you need a much larger buckle for this project.

Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
SC = Single Crochet

Lanyard Pattern:
Starting with white…
Chain 80, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch across
attach red yarn…
Row 3: Chain 1 and SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 4: SC in each stitch across. Fasten off.

On either end of the red/white strip, attach blue yarn and make 4 SC stitches across end, chain 1, turn.
Continue to SC rows of blue until you have 35 rows. Fasten off leaving long tail.

Add your key ring and stitch together the lanyard right above the ring. Stitch the white part using white yarn and the red part using red yarn so that your sewing stitches are hidden.

Now join together your ends. If you are using a breakaway buckle then sew the ends onto the buckle at this point.

Follow my pattern for TEENY TINY CROCHET STARS and make 5-6 white starts to stitch onto the blue part of your lanyard.

Now wear your lanyard and show your American pride!
