Yarn Cake with a Crochet Candle

June 16, 2014

Forget the frosting! I celebrated my birthday by treating myself to a yarn cake! Beautiful new skeins of yarn take the shape of a birthday cake that any crocheter, knitter, and yarn lover would gladly dig into! Fat-free, zero calories, perfect as a birthday gift or a cute centerpiece at a party. I even crocheted a little candle to top it off (pattern below).

I used 11 skeins of my favorite yarn: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. 7 skeins make up the bottom layer (6 in the round and one in the middle) and 4 more skeins for the top layer. I placed everything on a cake plate.

Use a loop of scotch tape (or double sided tape) to hold the yarn skeins together. This helps them stand up and stick together as bunch. Then take a long piece of Wired Edge Ribbon (21/2 inches x 10 yds) and wrap it around the middle of each layer and tie a bow. The two layers aren’t connect to each other.

A yarn cake just wouldn’t be complete without a crochet candle! Very simple pattern that can be adjust to make a skinnier candle or as long/short as you like.
Materials:
-Size H Crochet Hook
-Worsted Weight Yarn
-Poly-fil stuffing
-Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
SC decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
Crochet Candle Pattern:
Magic Ring,  chain 1 and make 10 SC inside ring, pull tight and join to first SC, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 2: in back loops only, SC in each stitch around, do not join, continue to SC in rounds. (10 SC)
Round 3-15: now working in both loops, SC in each stitch around. Feel free to make candle as long/short as you like. (10 SC)
Stuff with poly-fil
Round 16: in back loops only, SC decrease until closed.
Use tapestry needle to weave in ends.
To make candle skinnier, start with less SC in your magic ring loop.
To make the flame, I followed THIS LEAF PATTERN by Mamachee. I love this pattern and have used it many times!
Sew the flame on to the top of the candle and stick candle between the skeins in the center of your top “cake” layer!
Better than chocolate if you ask me 🙂

I can't resist Vanna's yarn from Lionbrand. It's wonderful to work with and the colors are fantastic!

Planning to make this yarn cake for my sister who crochets. Think she will love. But I don’t crochet. Do you think I could pay you or someone to make the crochet candle for me. It’s so cute!
