Embroidery Hoop Owl

September 3, 2014

Happy September! I’m welcoming in the new month and the new season with this cute Fall Owl made  with buttons, burlap, fabric, and an embroidery hoop! Really quick to put together so you could make lots of owls in different sizes! How about a whole owl family for your mantel or wall decor?!

Materials:
– Embroidery hoop. The one I used is 5″.
– Favorite Findings Buttons (affiliate links to specific buttons below) EXCEPT the daisies for the eyes. I couldn’t find them online 🙁 I purchased them at Jo-Ann Fabrics. They are Favorite Findings Dazzling Daisies and come in a pack of 12.
– Fabric square or quarter. (link to the one I used below)
– Burlap to fit in hoop
– Hot glue gun

Set burlap in hoop and tighten as much as possible. I put the hoop screw on the bottom because I thought it mimicked little branch that the owl is perched on 🙂
Cut two wing shapes out of your fabric and start arranging your buttons. I lucked out and had a 3 hole orange button that worked well for the nose. Two small orange buttons for the feet, brown buttons for the front feathers and Large buttons + daisy buttons + small black button for the eyes. I used two wood buttons for the ears but you could use any buttons for that or leave off the ears all together.
You COULD sew all the elements down…which was what I was going to do originally. But then I got impatient and decided to hot glue everything 🙂
I trimmed the burlap around the hoop edge and glued that to the inside of the ring as well.

Whooo is the cutest Fall owl around? This guy!

What I appreciated most about Escape Road is its superb combination of storytelling and puzzle complexity. The level design is innovative and filled with surprising moments that evoke strong emotions. The engaging narrative connects challenges seamlessly, making every step feel like a significant achievement. I truly value the creativity behind this game.

Xlope is a simple yet addictive game where players control a ball rolling down an increasingly faster slope, dodging obstacles and chasms, and trying to travel as far as possible.

I love how you’ve repurposed an embroidery hoop for this owl; it’s such a clever idea! Using burlap for the base is a great textural choice, and I especially like the detail of placing the hoop screw on the bottom to look like a perch. It’s a little touch that really elevates the design. I’m also curious about the button arrangement – did you have a specific pattern in mind for the feathers, or was it more of an intuitive process? I can imagine making a whole family of these, perhaps using different fabrics and button combinations for each. Thanks for sharing this fun fall craft!

I love the idea of using an embroidery hoop as the base for this owl – it’s such a clever way to give it a circular form that feels so natural for the shape of an owl’s body. The way you’ve arranged the buttons for the face, especially the daisy buttons for the eyes and the orange button for the beak, is really charming. I also appreciate the detail about using the hoop screw as a perch; that’s a fantastic little touch that adds to the character. I’ve been looking for a quick fall craft, and this seems like it would be perfect for a rainy afternoon, maybe even with some friends if we all gather our buttons.

I love the idea of using an embroidery hoop as the base for this owl! It’s such a clever way to repurpose something common into a decorative piece. The suggestion of using buttons for the features is also really neat – I can picture how different button shapes and colors would create unique expressions. I’m curious, did you find the burlap tightened easily to create a smooth surface, or was there a bit of fuss involved? I’m always a little hesitant with burlap, as it can fray easily. This would be a fun project to do with my nieces; they could help sort through buttons to find the perfect ones for the eyes and beak.

This is such a lovely project! The way you used different stitches to create the feather texture is really clever and gives the owl so much character. I have a similar hoop I’ve been wanting to use, and this might be the perfect inspiration.

This is such a charming idea for fall decor! I love how you’ve used an embroidery hoop as the base and incorporated burlap and buttons to create such a textured, autumnal owl. The detail about placing the hoop screw to mimic a perch is a clever touch. I can definitely see how this could be a fun project for kids or anyone looking for a quick craft. My only thought is, if someone wanted to make this more durable for younger hands, would sewing the buttons down be significantly more difficult than hot gluing? It seems like a small trade-off for longevity.

This is such a charming idea, and I love how you’ve incorporated so many different textures with the burlap and buttons! The little detail of placing the hoop screw as a branch is brilliant. I’m always looking for quick and cute seasonal crafts, and this owl definitely fits the bill. I can already picture making a few in different color palettes for a festive display. Did you find it tricky to get the burlap taut enough in the hoop, or does it tend to loosen up over time?
