G is for Giraffe: Crochet Giraffe Applique

October 8, 2014

Here is Day 7 of my 26 Days of Crochet Animal Alphabet Appliques!
G is for Giraffe

Grab your hooks because this little Giraffe is a great gender-neutral embellishment for crochet baby items! Remember that I also have a FREE Crochet Giraffe Hat pattern!

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Chocolate and Mustard and a little bit of black for the eyes.
– Size G Crochet Hook (the bigger the hook the bigger the appliqué and vice versa)
– Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Sl St = Slip Stitch
SC =  Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Giraffe Applique Pattern:
Starting with brown…
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 5 SC in ring, pull tight but don’t join, chain 1 turn
Row 2: 2 SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Row 3: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Continue to SC across flat side of half circle. You should have 6 single crochets along this edge.
Switch to yellow yarn, chain 1, turn
Row 4-8: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 9: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 10: SC in each stitch across (4 SC), chain 3, turn
Row 11: HDC in second chain (of the chain 3), slip stitch in last chain, join in same stitch with a slip stitch (you have now made one of the ears), slip stitch across row, in last stitch chain 3, HDC in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in last chain, join in same stitch with slip stitch. Fasten off leaving long tail.
Attach brown yarn next to ear. Chain 4, Slip Stitch in 3rd chain from hook and in last chain. join with a slip stitch to the same place where you started. Do the same next to other ear. These are the antlers.

With your tapestry needle, stitch on spots with brown. Add black eyes as well and two little yellow nostrils. Weave in loose ends.
