X is for X-ray Fish: Crochet X-ray Fish Applique

October 25, 2014

Here is Day 24 of my 26 Days of Crochet Animal Alphabet Appliques!

X is for X-ray Fish
The Pristella Tetra are freshwater fish that are tiny in size and can often be used as pets for home aquariums. They have a highly transparent body which is why they are known as the X-ray Tetra or X-ray Fish! I chose to make mine dark purple but you could use any color. I believe they are realistically a more yellowish color.

Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Egglplant and white and little bit of black for the eye.
– Size G Crochet Hook (the bigger the hook the bigger the appliqué and vice versa)
– Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
Sl St = Slip Stitch
SC =  Single Crochet
SC Decrease  = Single Crochet Decrease
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

X-ray Fish Appliqué Pattern:
With purple
Chain 9, SC in 2nd chain from hook and in next 6, 4 SC in last chain, SC in each stitch on other side of chain (18 SC), join, chain 1
Round 2: SC in first 2, HDC in next 2, DC in next 2, 2 DC in next 6, DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC in next 2, join,
Chain 4, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, SC in last, chain 4, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, SC in last, join, fasten off.
Join yarn 4 stitches from tail. Chain 3, DC in same stitch as chain 3, HDC in next, SC in next, slip stitch to join. Join yarn 8 stitch from tail on the other side but work the opposite way, join with slip stitch, SC in next, HDC in next, DC + chain 3 all in one stitch.
Fasten off.
With white
Chain 5, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC + DC in next, DC + HDC in next, SC in last, fasten off leaving long tail.
Sew on skeleton head the use long yarn tail to stitch on the fish skeleton body.

    Where is the tail? I've read this pattern 17 times and I'm not seeing the tail? Guess I'll improvise.
