Crochet Santa Sleigh and Reindeer Hat

December 12, 2014

Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! And I know you all recall the most famous reindeer of all, which is Rudolph of course 🙂 I found the most adorable sleigh and reindeer buttons the other day and thanks to Amazon Prime I got them in hand yesterday and immediately attached them to a crochet hat! The buttons are small (about a 1/2 inch wide) so I thought a simple single crochet baby hat would fit them best. The pattern for this 0-3 month size hat is below but you could re-create this hat using any of my basic hat patterns (Try my gingerbread hat for a HDC hat or the base of my Snow Queen Hat for a DC pattern).

Materials:
– Dress It Up 7590 Sew Cute Sleigh/Reindeer Buttons!
– Lion Brand Lion’s Pride Woolspun yarn in Aquamarine – This is a bulky weight yarn but worsted would also work.
– White worsted or bulky weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Baby’s First Yarn in Cotton Ball
– Size H Crochet hook
– Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
0-3 month size Single Crochet Hat Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 11 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (22 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (22 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (33 SC)
Round 5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (33 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (44 SC)
Round 7-19: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (44 SC)
change to white yarn
Round 20: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew your buttons on!
Make french knots with white yarn to create falling snow. HERE is a tutorial on how to make a french knot.
Merry Christmas!

Love this hat! Others might like to know the yarn is available at Michael's. I found a good price on the buttons at Joann.com.

I’m having a VERY difficult time with the French knots! Ive finished the hat with the exception of the French knots. Ive looked up you tube tutorials and I still can’t get it! Any help would be greatly appreciated, My daughter really wants to wear it to my work Christmas party tomorrow!

    Hi there

Thank you so much for sharing your amazing patterns. I love them. I have a tiny request to make. When listing your supplies could you also give the hook size in mm? We don’t use letters in the uk so I’m always having to check what size the hook is. Would also be useful to have UK yarn terms if possible? Like worsted weight 4 = Aran, worsted weight 3 = Double Knit (DK) etc. Hope that’s ok? Thank you again
