Get the whole family in a festive mood with crochet Elf Hats for all! The hat works in DC rounds so you can easily change colors to make stripes. A perfect prop for your holiday photos!
Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn in green and red. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Kelly Green and Scarlett Red.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Pom-pom maker (optional)
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet
BPDC = Back Post Double Crochet
NOTE: ALL HATS START THE SAME WAY. You will begin with the long hat tail. IF you want the tail shorter/longer you can decrease/increase the amount of continuous rows. For instance if you want the tail shorter you would DC in each stitch around for rows 7-8 instead of 7-10 (and so on) and if you wanted the tail longer you DC in each stitch around for rows 7-12 instead of 7-10 (and so on). Just for reference, the current tail is great length on my 2-year-old, 4-year-old and also myself!

How do you get your pom poms to look so great. I have been TRYING to get mine to look like yours and NO luck. They always come out lopsided or too “flat” no matter how many times I wrap. Any suggestions?
I agree! I just finished making the sock monkeys for all 4 of my kids and followed the link to the tutorial listed in that pattern on Repeat Crafter Me. I did the exact number of rounds, but find they are not full enough to my liking. The instructions on that tutorial are not specific enough for me to know exactly how much to trim off after they are tied together.
Sarah, I am sure I am not alone when I say it would be much appreciated to have you prepare a pom-pom tutorial!
On a side note, I wanted to say how happy I am for Pinterest and that it led me to your blog. A knitter, I’d only crocheted the odd dish cloth and then some preemie hats for a blog I follow (given my youngest children were preemies as well), but they were detail-free and pretty simple and nothing like the beauty of the hats you make and post here!
Long story short, in my city, there is a girl selling hats which must be from your patterns and I thought, hey, I am going to figure this out! Your patterns are seriously amazing and I can not thank you enough for taking the time to prepare them and make them available to us out here in blog-land. I’ve now completed about 12 hats and am “hooked” (pun intended 🙂 ).
Thank you!
Get a Pom Ppm maker! They are AMAZING!
Hi love the pattern however on rows 28 do we put 2 dc in the first st and then put 3 hdc, do we do that around. And on row 29 it says 2 dc in first st and dc around put at the end of row it says (45hdc) help me please in advance.
I’m confused there too!!! I really think she meant DC..it looks odd with HDC. I tried looking at the picture and they all seem to look like DC.
I did it all with DC and it turned out great:)
Is there a gauge for this pattern? Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I really appreciate how easy it is to follow your written instructions. And thanks for the picture of the finished Elf Hat on that sweet boy!
My husband has a big head, do you have any suggestions on how to make this hat bigger than the Adult size you posted?
I have used this pattern for the last 2 Christmases for elf hats for friends and family. This last year I made one with Mickey ears that was super cute! Now I am making Mardi Gras elf hats!
Thanks Sarah, I love everything that you make!
Do you join in the chain stitch or the first DC?
This is adorable, but it looks as though none of us are going to get a response for the cute elf hat. I have many “elf hat” tute’s on google and on youtube, but this one is really cute
Can you do this in a spiral rather than joining each row?
Thank you so….much for thos pattern! It was so easy to follow and made it in no time. Love it!
Lovely
I made one of these for my grandson for his 1st Christmas…he is now five and still insists on wearing this every year…and it still fits! Will be making more this year. Such an easy pattern. Thank you!
That’s good news, I’ve been searching for it for days
