Crochet Cluster V-Stitch Striped Blanket with Shell Border

December 1, 2015

VstitchBlanket1

Bold stripes and Cluster V-stitches are the perfect pair in this crochet blanket! This is a simple repetitive pattern that works up quickly. Make it as long/wide as you’d like and the color combination possibilities are endless!

VstitchBlanket4

Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn. I used Loops & Threads Impeccable in Aran, Lavender, and Amethyst.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
How to Make the Cluster V-Stitch PLEASE NOTE that I only made one chain in my cluster v-stitches instead of 2 chains.
DC = Double Crochet
SC = Single Crochet

Finished Size: approx 36×36 inches

Starting with Lavender yarn
Chain 113 (93 for smaller and 133, 153, or 173 for larger.)
Row 1: Cluster V-stitch in 4th chain from hook, *skip 2 chains, Cluster V-stitch in next chain, repeating from * the rest of the way down chain, DC in the last Chain, Chain 3, turn.
Row 2: Cluster V-stitch in each of the Cluster V-stitches from previous row, DC in last chain of your chain 3, Chain 3, turn.
Row 3: Same as Row 2.
Row 4: Same as Row 2 with Aran color yarn.
Row 5-6: Same as Row 2 with Amethyst color yarn.
Row 7: Same as Row 2 with Aran color yarn.
Row 8-10: Same as Row 2 with Lavender color yarn.
Continue to repeat pattern.
Your color changes should look like this:
3 rows of Lavender, 1 row of Aran, 2 rows of Amethyst, 1 row of Aran.
I made a total of 7 dark purple stripes. A total of 52 rows. Fasten off and weave in all ends when finished.

Shell Stitch Border: Starting in the middle of the purple stripe on the rough edge.
Rough edge is where you see the color changes. Smooth edge is the top and bottom where the stitches are all in purple.

VstitchBlanket7

Join yarn and make a SC, now reaching your hook to the corner, make 7 DC in the corner. Now working on smooth edge. Skip one Cluster V-stitch and SC to join to middle of next Cluster V-stitch, *make 7 DC in the next Cluster V-stitch, SC to next Cluster V-stitch, repeat from * down smooth edge. Make 7 DC in the corner.
Now you will be working on the rough edge. Your shell stitches will only be on the Aran color stripes. SC in the middle of lavender row, 7 DC all in one stitch on the end of Aran stripe, SC in the middle of Amethyst row, 7 DC all in one stitch in the Aran stripe, SC in the middle of Lavender row, repeat down edge.

Continue shell stitch along remaining two edges following instructions for rough edge and smooth edge.

VstitchBlanket2

I also made a matching Cluster V-stitch hat! Pattern by BobWilson123. You can find the video tutorial HERE and the written pattern HERE. I added two rounds of SC on the bottom and earflaps. Flower pattern can be found HERE.

So the stitch is the same thru out the blanket, I guess when using the white or “Aron” color it makes it look like a ripple or chevron stitch. I really like this and it looks simple enough to do. Even for someone like me who is still very much still stuck in beginning phase of crocheting. I can’t seem to do anything but blankets and scarfs. Hats are the worse for me. Can’t figure out the pattern and I don’t have anyone to show me. Thanks for sharing the pattern with us. I can’t wait to try it out. You give me inspiration that some day I can be advanced enough to maybe someday sell the work I make.

I love the colour combination it makes it look luxurious without a doubt. Do you have any tips on how you keep it looking exactly the same size throughout? My tension is loose and I adjust for this even counting the number of stitches per row and yet it always looks slightly misshaped.

This is a beautiful afghan. I want to make it in blue and white for my teenage son. Do you know how I can figure out how many skeins of yarn I’ll need? I don’t crochet much and am not sure how to figure it out. Thanks for all your wonderful patterns. I’m going to try your snowman bags too.

    Hi there, happy new year!
Has any of the December posters given it a go and know how many skeins to use?
    Thanks

I love this pattern and am currently making an afghan. How would you suggest weaving in all the loose thread ends? The v-stitch pattern doesn’t leave much for weaving in loose thread? Thanks for your help and thanks for the beautiful pattern.

In the tutorial on how to make the V-stitch cluster, it says that the starting chain should be a multiple of three. In this blanket pattern, you give instructions for making a larger blanket with chain numbers that are not multiples of three. Why is that? Which is the correct thing to do? Do I follow the instructions in the pattern or the tutorial?

Why are none of the questions/comments not answered? It is important to know how much yarn to purchase and that asked been asked several times with no replies.

Sarah, you are AMAZING!!! I have several of your patterns. I made one for the daughter of a friend going off to college. She LOVES it. I look for different, easy stitches and how they are put together. A cluster V stitch adds a little je ne sais quoi. Thank you for sharing.

This is adorable, but it looks as though none of us are going to get a response for the cute elf hat. I have many “elf hat” tute’s on google and on youtube, but this one is really cute
