Crochet Snowman Square

December 21, 2015

SnowmanSquare1

The first day of winter calls for something seasonal, something snowy… like a Crochet Snowman Square! The added embellishments make it a bit more work than your average granny square, but definitely worth it! It would be great paired with solid squares or snowflake squares. Or continue the border and make a large pillow cushion! You could also make the square bigger by using a larger hook and chunky yarn. I like to think that a few of you will make a blanket with snowmen wearing different color hats. Please share with me if you do!

Materials:
-Worsted Weight Yarn in white, red, and blue with a bit of orange and black for embellishments. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in White, Scarlet, Aqua (from the baby line), and a bit of Terracotta orange.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Two small black buttons
– Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
HDC =Half Double Crochet

Finished size: approx 8×8 inches when blocked.

Snowman Granny Square Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 4 DC with white and 4 DC with red in ring, pull tight, join to first DC, join, chain 2 with white. (8 DC)
Round 2: Make 2 DC in each stitch around. The first 8 DC will be worked with white, then you will join with red and make the last 8 DC. (16 DC), join, chain 2 with white
Round 3: 2 DC in each stitch around. First 16 DC in white, last 16 DC in red, join, chain 2 with white. (32 DC)
Round 4: 2 DC in first, DC in next, repeat around. First 24 in white, last 24 in red, join, attach blue yarn. (48 DC)
Round 5: with blue, chain 4, skip 3 stitches, join to next stitch with a slip stitch, repeat around making a total of 12 chain spaces.
Round 6: slip stitch into first chain space. Chain 3 + 2 DC over chain space, chain 1, in next chain space make 3 DC + chain 1 + 3 DC, 3 DC + chain 1 in next two spaces, 3 DC + chain 1 + 3 DC in next, 3 DC + chain 1 in next two spaces,  3 DC + chain 1 + 3 DC in next, 3 DC + chain 1 in next two spaces,  3 DC + chain 1 + 3 DC in next, 3 DC + chain 1 in last, join to top of chain 3.
Round 7: slip stitch over to first chain 1 space. Chain 3 + 2 DC + chain 1 in space, 3 DC + chain 1+ 3 DC in corner space, 3 DC + chain 1 in next space, repeat around, making 3 DC + chain 1 on the sides and 3 DC + chain 1 + 3 DC in the corners, join to top of chain 3, chain 1.
Round 8: SC in each stitch around making a SC + chain 1 + SC in each of the corner spaces.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hat Brim (optional):
With red yarn, chain 4, in back loops only, slip stitch in second chain from hook and in remaining two, chain 1, turn.
Row 2-12(or as long/short as you need): slip stitch in back loops only, chain 1, turn
Strip should fit across middle of circle. Sew on.

Nose:

Chain 4, slip stitch in second chain from hook, SC in next, HDC in last, make 2 SC over the back of the HDC, slip stitch to join. Fasten off and sew onto white part of face.

    Sarah – Thank you for such an adorable snowman square! I have been gathering a collection of patterns to make a baby blanket with each 6 inch square a different pattern. I have animals and various shapes that a baby would learn to identify as he grows, No recipient in mind – just to have for someone special. You have added many of the patterns to my collection, and I must say that I love your style and your creativity. Thanks ever so much!
