Crochet Pumpkin Pouch

September 26, 2016

pumpkinpouch1

A crochet Pumpkin Pouch is the perfect accessory to hold all those Halloween goodies and candy! A special treat for your kids, class parties, teacher, neighbor, family member, or friend! The top cinches closed to look like a stem and vine! Leave your pumpkin plain or add a fun jack-o-lantern face. Thick and quick to whip up too. I used two strands of Bernat Super Value Yarn in (wait for it) PUMPKIN color!

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value Yarn in Pumpkin, Taupe, Fern, and Black if you want to create the jack-o-lantern face. Shop all colors at Yarnspirations.com.
Note: Split one skein of pumpkin into two skeins or get two skeins of pumpkin so you can easily crochet two strands at once.
– Size H crochet hook
– Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Finished Size: Approximately 6 inches wide and 7 inches tall when laid flat.

Pumpkin Pouch Pattern:
starting with two strands of pumpkin yarn
Magic Ring, chain1 and make 10 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next stitch, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next two, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 7-15: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 ( 40 SC)
Round 16: SC Decrease, SC in next two, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 17-19: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
switch to brown yarn (one strand only)
Round 20: chain 2 and make a DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2
Round 21: DC in each stitch around, join, fasten off and weave in ends.

Pumpkin Vine:
with green yarn
Chain 75, 2 SC in second chain from hook and in next 20 stitches (this creates the curly part), slip stitch in remaining chains.
Fasten off and weave in, over and under, the DC stitches from Round 20.

Leaf: Make an easy Crochet Leaf << pattern HERE and sew onto other end of your vine ( the part with the curl). Remember that you will want to attach your leaf AFTER you have woven your vine through the DC stitches on the pouch.

Jack-O-Lantern Face:
with black yarn
Triangles (make 3) : chain 4, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in last chain. Fasten off leaving a tail to sew onto pouch. Two triangles for the eyes and an upside down triangle for the nose.
Mouth: Chain 16, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC decrease over next two, chain 3 and slip stitch to the same spot as your decrease, slip stitch in next 4 chains, chain 3, DC decrease (starting in spot where you have your chain 3), DC in next, DC decrease, DC, HDC, SC in last. Even if your mouth isn’t in the perfect smile shape, you can still sew it on correctly!

    Are the leaves and the stems worked with a single or double strand of green yarn? I followed directions for the vine, but it isn’t curling. Do you have a suggestion for me to make it curl, please?
    Thanks for a cute Hallowe’en project!

      From my experience, you have to put 2 SC in each chain all the way down, for it to curl.

    Any particular reason for using 2 strands other than strength? I was wondering if 1 strand would do.

    How much of the 197g super value skein does it actually take to make one pumpkin? I have 2 x 50g skeins to run two strands at a time, wondering if that will be enough to complete it…?
    Thanks!

    Hello. I am having trouble with row 6. I keep getting 45 stitches after making 30 stitches in row 5. Please help me understand what I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

    Hey there, wonderful pattern! Is there something I’m missing for the triangle of the face? The pattern leaves me with 2 rows of stitches, not a triangle.. :/
