Crochet Christmas Owl Coaster or Trivet

October 13, 2016

owlcoasters1

If you’ve been a long time follower of Repeat Crafter Me, you may have noticed that I love multiple uses for my patterns! With a couple of tweaks to my crochet Owl Super Scarf, you can make a cute coaster or trivet! I used Bernat Super Value worsted weight yarn in the most perfect Christmas colors and changed a few rows of the pattern to make a slightly smaller version of the owl.

Materials:
Bernat Super Value Yarn in Berry, Lush, and Winter White
Size H Crochet Hook
Two small black buttons (optional)
One orange triangle button (optional) – found at Jo-Ann Fabrics
Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC  = Double Crochet

With winter white yarn
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 14 DC in ring, join to first DC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 ( 28 SC)
Change to red (or green)
Round 3: 2 SC, skip 1 stitch, 2 SC in next, repeat around, join to first SC, chain 1 ( 28 SC)
Round 4: SC in first, chain 1, skip a stitch, SC in next, chain 1, skip a stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join
Round 5: slip stitch over one so you are working into first chain space, chain 2 (counts as first HDC) + 2 HDC, chain 1, 3 HDC in next chain space, chain 1, 3 HDC in next chain space, repeat around, join to top of first DC, fasten off, weave in ends. (14 clusters of 3 HDC stitches)
With green (or red)
Round 6: join to first chain space with a SC, chain 4, skip over 3 DC stitches from previous round and SC in next chain space, chain 4, SC in next chain space, repeat around, join
Round 7: slip stitch over one so you are working in the chain 4 space, chain 3 (counts as first DC) and make 3 DC in chain space, chain 1, 4 DC in next chain space, chain 1, repeat around, join to top of first DC. Do not make any chains.
Round 8: make 6 DC in 3rd DC of each DC set to create a scallop, SC in chain space, 6 DC in 3rd DC, SC in chain space, repeat until you’ve made 10 scallops. Do not fasten off.

Now we are going to work in rows

Row 1: chain 3 (you should be in SC of the chain space), DC in next two stitches, HDC in next, SC in next 10 stitches (skip over the chain spaces), HDC in next, 2 DC in last two stitches and make one more DC in the chain space, chain 3, turn
Row 2: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in each stitch but make 2 DC in the last stitch, chain 3, turn
Row 3: DC in each stitch across, fasten off and weave in ends.

Eyes:
With winter white
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 12 DC in ring, pull tight and fasten off leaving long tail sew onto head.
Sew black buttons onto center of eyes.

Sew on orange button or alternatively you could stitch on a little bit of yarn to make the triangle nose.

Stitch on a few strands of white in a loop between the scallops at the bottom for little feet!

To see more of how this is constructed, you can refer to my Owl Super Scarf tutorial.

    Sarah, thank you so much for the cute owl coasters. Its funny that just today my little 3yr old grandson was just going on and on about an owl and he informed me that he wanted to be an owl for Halloween so he could have wings and fly.

    Love these adorable owls coasters/trivets. I plan on making them for my children as pre-Christmas gifts so they can use them for the holidays. The children will love them. You have the greatest ideas and patterns. Bless you.

    I’m a bit confused. On round 4, it says:
    Round 4: SC in first, chain 1, SC in next, chain 1, SC in next, repeat around, join. But if I do that in each SC, I get 28 chain 1 spaces but I only need 14 per the pictures. Are we supposed to do the SC in the spaces BETWEEN the 2 sc sets? The way it reads is in every SC…waiting with hook and yarn and on round 3 till I hear what to do. Thank you. 🙂

      Thank you for catching this Margie! There was a slight error. You need to sip a stitch… so it should read SC in first, chain 1, SKIP A STITCH, SC in next. I am so sorry for the mistake! I tweaked the pattern from my owl scarf and this part didn’t get updated when writing up the new post. The post has now been updated 🙂

    Has anyone else made this yet? And if so what did you do in that round. Thank you.

    I absolutely love your patterns but I was wondering if there was a way they could be converted to printable or PDF’s. Thanks so much.

      I use both CleanPrint or Print Friendly. Both free downloads. Almost all of my patterns are saved from those. (CleanPrint is my favorite)

    So cute! I am looking forward to making these! Question: how big are they? Or should I make one to find out? ; )
