Bernat POP! Butterfly Crochet Graphgan – Part 2

May 7, 2017

ButterflyBlanket1If you’ve been following along for the past few weeks you probably have seen the Bernat POP! Butterfly Graphgan I’ve been feverishly working on! It started with one butterfly panel and then turned into a total of 6 using all different shades of Yarnspirations Bernat POP! yarn. You can see all 12 gorgeous self-striping colors at Yarnspirations.com.  In Part 1 of this two post series, you can find the pattern, graph and all the details about this gorgeous Bernat POP! yarn. In this post I will show you how I joined the butterfly panels and added a simple border. But as always feel free to put your own creative twist on this blanket!

CLICK HERE to see Part 1 of this post that includes Butterfly pattern, graph, materials, and a few other key details.

When you have finished all of your squares, you will begin on adding borders to all six of them!

First you will DC around each square in white yarn. Make a DC + chain 2 + DC in each of the corners. On the rough edges, try to space your DC stitches evenly. You don’t want to over do it the edges of your butterfly will start to ripple.

Next, make another round of DC stitches along the border but this time using black yarn. Just as before make a DC + chain 2 + DC in each of the four corners.

Now that all of your borders are done, you are ready to join your butterfly panels! You will make 3 joins. One directly down the middle and two going horizontal  between the first and second row and then another join between the 2nd and 3rd row of butterflies.

I used the mattress stitch to join the panels.
Below is a quick video on how to do the mattress stitch.

Don’t let the corners catch you off guard! Just keep joining those corners together. They will all pull together nicely. In fact, is it just me or do the corner joins kind look like tiny butterflies?!

O
ne finally piece to the graphgan and you are finished!! Let’s make one last border around the entire blanket to tie it all together. I opted for a simple black border because I really wanted the Bernat POP! Butterflies to stand out and be the focal point. I would love to see other versions if that is what you prefer! I made an entire round of DC stitches in black yarn along the edges. Make  2 DC + chain 2 + 2 DC in the four corners.

THEN I went ahead and made one more round of crab stitches (this is a reverse SC) to make a sturdy edge. Make 2 crab stitch + chain 2 + 2  crab stitch in each corner. If this is confusing, please refer to my Christmas Character Afghan as I made the exact same crab stitch border along the edge of it. I just love perfect looking afghan corners!

Finished Size is approximating 64 inches wide by 70 inches long!
It almost fits a twin size bed perfectly!
Zoe is claiming it as hers already but I was thinking of gifting this beauty to a friend 🙂

This is great Sarah! Thank you!!! However there is no PDF of the written pattern for the butterflies, just a pictoral graph? It’d really help if the written pattern was in a PDF as well since I can’t add it to the part 2 instructions. I’m loving this idea!!

    Thanks!
