Crochet Caterpillar Picture Frame Wall Hanging

July 3, 2017

I spotted these fun little circle wooden craft picture frame on Amazon and suddenly it sparked an idea! If I could just crochet around the edges and join them together, they could become a rainbow caterpillar! I made up the pattern as I went along and I think the end result is a hit! I printed black and white pictures of Zoe making funny faces and it became a super cute wall hanging for her room! Great for a babies room or nursery where you would want to feature monthly growth pictures. The crochet picture frame covers are removable so you can absolutely change out the pictures any time. Now lets get to the pattern!

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value Yarn in Hot Red, Carrot, Bright Yellow, Fern Green, Hot Blue, Light Damson (purple), and Black. You need a stretchy worsted weight yarn for this project and Bernat Super Value is perfect! Shop all these colors at Yarnspirations.com
– Wooden circle picture frames. You can purchase HERE on Amazon (affiliate).
– Comic Safety Eyes (optional) I purchased mine HERE.
– Size G crochet hook
– Tapestry Needle

Frame cover pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 7 and 8: in back loops only, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 9: now working in both loops again, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 10: SC decrease, SC in next two, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 11: SC decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
If you purchased the same frames I did, remove the hanging screw from all frames except the one for the head of the caterpillar. The screws easily pull out with a little pull and twist.

print out pictures (you can even just print them on your home printer using printer paper) and use the circle in from the back of the frame to trace and then cute out the pictures.

Slip frames into the crocheted covers. They will stretch but then stretch right back into shape once the frame is in if you are using Bernat Super Value yarn.

Caterpillar Feet Pattern: (make two for each frame)
With black yarn…
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, pull tight, join to first SC, chain 1
Row 2: SC in first two stitches, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto side of frame.

Caterpillar Antennae Pattern: (make two)
With black yarn…
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 4: SC decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join chain 1
Round 5-7: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew onto top of caterpillar head.

The caterpillar head pattern is just a covered frame turned around! Add safety eyes (that easily sit through the middle of the frame) and an stitch on a mouth. Remember to leave the little hanging mechanism on the head frame. It pokes easily through the top crochet stitches!

Stitch or tie frames together using a little bit of black yarn.

Hang it up!

Love the caterpillar picture frame idea and love watching how the little girl is growing…almost makes me wish mine were back little…you notice “almost”.
Was wondering if you think this idea would work using the canning jar rings and lids?

Crocheting always deserves special respect. A great frame where you can insert large format images This will make your room format more refined and demanding, which will give it more charm and harmony.
