Well, this was supposed to be for Zoe but I guess I got carried away and this Crochet Cupcake Costume ended up fitting me! So Zoe gets to be a princess as she originally requested and now I’m not the only one in the family without a costume 🙂
This is actually a really quick project! I finished the whole thing within a day! And just brainstorming here but I bet you could definitely make this smaller by using a smaller hook and even switching to worsted weight yarn!
Materials:
– Kid Size Hula Hoop (mine was 25 inches across but I am sure you can improvise with whatever size you can find!)
– 2 skeins of Bernat Blanket yarn in brown and 2 skeins of Bernat Blanket yarn in pixie pink (or whatever colors you want to use for your cupcake!) Shop yarn at Yarnspiration.com.
– Size P crochet hook.
– Scrap yarn for sprinkles
– Large Tapestry Needle
Materials for Cherry Headband:
– Black headband
– A bit of Bernat Blanket Yarn in red
– Size P crochet hook
– Polyfil fiber stuffing
The secret to this project is a HULA HOOP! That is what gives the cupcake its shape!
I snagged this one from the clearance bin at Michaels Craft Store and I believe it is a kids size (about 25 inches across).
First you will want to single crochet around your hula hoop. Here is a quick video on how I did that. Follow pattern below for stitch count.
Special Stitch: FPDC Decrease. Watch Video Below for explanation:
Bottom of Cupcake:
With brown yarn..
SC 112 over hula hoop, join, chain 2
Round 2: DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2
Round 3: FPDC in first, BPDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 4: FPDC decrease (this is a unique stitch to this project-watch video), FPDC/BPDC repeating in next 9, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 5: FPDC in first, BPDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (90 DC)
Round 6: FPDC decrease (just as before), FPDC/BPDC repeating in next 7, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 7: FPDC in first, BPDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 8: FPDC decrease (just as before), FPDC/BPDC repeating in the next 5, repeat around, join, chain 2
Round 9-11: FPDC in first, BPDC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (55)
Feel free to continue crocheting in FPDC/BPDC rounds to add length. I am barely 5’3 so if you are taller, you might want more length.
Round 12: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off and weave in ends. (55)
Cupcake top (make 2)
With pink yarn
Chain 57, SC all the way down chain, chain 1, turn (56)
Row 2-10: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 11: SC Decrease, SC in next 52, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (54)
Row 12: SC Decrease, SC in next 50, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (52)
Row 13: SC Decrease, SC in next 48, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (50)
Row 14: SC Decrease, SC in next 46, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (48)
Row 15: SC Decrease, SC in next 44, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (46)
Row 16: SC Decrease, SC in next 42, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (44)
Row 17: SC Decrease, SC in next 40, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (42)
Row 18: SC Decrease, SC in next 38, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (40)
Row 19: SC Decrease, SC in next 36, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (38)
Row 20: SC Decrease, SC in next 34, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (36)
Row 21: SC Decrease, SC in next 32, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (34)
Row 22: SC Decrease, SC in next 30, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (32)
Row 23: SC Decrease, SC in next 28, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (30)
Row 24: SC Decrease, SC in next 26, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn (28
Row 25: SC in each stitch across (28)
Fasten off
On only one of the cupcake top pieces you will make straps by doing the following:
Join yarn 5th stitch in from edge (either side), SC in 8 stitches across, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC Decrease, SC in next 4, SC Decrease in last two, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 4: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, SC Decrease in last two, chain 1, turn
Row 5-15: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4)
Do the same on other side (5 stitches in)
Below is what your two pieces should look like! Yes, they will look short but there is a TON of stretch to the yarn and it sages when you wear it. This is definitely what caught me off-guard when I “thought” I was making it to fit a 4 year old LOL!
Stitch top cupcake pieces onto the hoop using your tapestry needle. Each piece should fit halfway around the hoop.
Stitch up sides of the two top cupcakes pieces! At this point you can also sew the straps to the back side of the cupcake top as well.
Crochet scallops along the bottom edge of the pink cupcake top (this is the part that will hang over the hoop).
Scallop Pattern:
Join yarn at any point along bottom edge of pink cupcake top
Skip two stitches and make 5 DC stitches in next stitch, skip 2 stitches and join with a slip stitch, repeat around.
Add sprinkles using scrap yarn!
Now lets make a Cherry Headband!
With red yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 4-5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 6: SC decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Stuff with poly-fil
Round 7: SC decrease until closed.
Fasten off and stitch or hot glue over headband.
Step into the costume and show off your handmade Halloween crochet skills!

This is amazing. I’m going to attempt making one for myself. The only problem I’m having is finding a Hula Hoop that is the proper size. Is there a way you calculated the decreases for the bottom half that maybe I could figure out a way to do it with a larger hoop? I’m currently have 160 sc on my Hoop, instead of the 112.

I love this! I think you should have an Etsy account and sell this because I’d buy it and wear it for Halloween (I work in a school and the kids would love it)
