Crochet Snowman

November 14, 2017

I got an e-mail from a reader asking if I could make a Crochet Snowman the same size as my Crochet Gingerbread so they could alternate them on some holiday garland. I thought this was a fabulous idea! So I updated my Crochet Snowman Applique into more of an ornament size!! And the two Christmas Buddies look so adorable together 🙂 Get the Gingerbread Man pattern HERE. The Snowman Pattern is written below!

I was debating on whether the snowman should have a top hat or wear earmuffs. So I took this question to Facebook and it sounds like you guys like the earmuffs the best! But don’t worry, I will post patterns for both options!

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value in White, Red, Black or Aqua Blue, and a bit of Orange. Shop colors at Yarnspirations.com.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– 2 small Safety Eyes for the eyes and 3 slightly bigger Safety Eyes for the buttons (Do yourself a favor and get yourself THIS 100 PIECE BOX for only $6.99!!!) affiliate
– Tapestry Needle

Finished Size: Approximately 7 inches tall by 5 inches wide

Snowman Body: Make 2
with white yarn
Magic Ring, chain 2, and make 10 DC in ring, join chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (20 DC)
Round 3: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (40 DC)
now we are going to work in rows
Row 4: chain 1, SC, HDC in next, 2 DC in next 3, HDC, SC, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC, HDC, 2 DC in next 6, HDC, SC, chain 1, turn
Row 6: SC HDC, DC in next 12, HDC, SC, do not turn
Continue by making a SC in the next stitch along bottom round of snowman, DC in each remaining stitch around the bottom of snowman, SC in last and join to the other side of the “head” of the snowman.

Snowman Carrot Nose:
With orange yarn
chain 3, Slip Stitch in second chain from hook, 2 SC in last. Fasten off leaving long tail.

Add safety eyes and stitch on nose to one of the body pieces. Stitch on a smile (optional!).

Slip stitch the two body pieces together.

Top Hat Pattern:
with black
chain 9, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
fasten off, re-attach yarn one stitch in,
Row 3: SC in 6 stitches, chain 1, turn
Row 4-5: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto snowman.
To make hat sturdier, make two and stitch together.

Earmuffs (make 2):
with blue yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, fasten off leaving tail
Stitch Earmuffs onto either side of head.
Using blue yarn, slip stitch along top of head from one earmuff to the other.

Scarf:
with red yarn
Chain 50, fasten off.
Make a knot at both ends of chain and cut yarn underneath knots to make a little bit of fringe. Tie scarf around neck of snowman!

What do you guys think? Should I add another Christmas Character to the group?! Feel free to comment here or on my Facebook page with any suggestions!

Thank you so much for sharing this apttern with us! I am not going to use it for a garland though – seems like a good style to make loose stuffed rag doll toys for the dogs at our local animal shelter (I knit and crochet blankets and toys for them year round and am always on the lookout for designs that work for that so I have a variety) – I just make two and stitch them together with some polyfill in the middle. Will have to replace the safety eyes with embroidery but that is easy enough. Thank you! Merry Christmas!!

I am thinking a penguin would be nice to go with the snowman for the post-holiday winter months.

Hi Sarah…. almost forgot to ask you ….. Do you think four sc is adequate to start the snowman instead of the magic circle? Thank you.

These are really adorable 🙂 Any suggestions as to what I would need to do to make these into place mats for my grandbabies? I thought it would be cute under their plates for Christmas breakfast… 🙂

Thank you for posting these adorable snowmen. I’ve already made the one with the earmuffs and it was so quick and easy to make. I showed it to my 3 granddaughters (ages 8 (twins) and 10). They all thought it was the most adorable thing they’ve ever seen. The 10 year old already has it hanging on her bedroom door and I have “orders” for the snowman with the top hat and the gingerbread man.

I have been following you on FB for a while and love your patterns. I’ve made several of them and have a bunch saved on Pinterest. Your patterns are always well written and the photos that you include are always helpful. I can’t wait to see what else you come up with!!!

Hi! I’ve recently discovered your site and love your patterns! I made the snowman and then also used the same basic pattern to make a penguin. I’m really pleased with how it turned out. I tried to attach a photo but can’t work out how!!

Thank you for the snowman pattern! I just made one side and appliquéd it to a crocheted stocking I made for my grandbaby. It was the perfect size and added just the touch of whimsy I was looking for.

I am new to crochet and trying to understand: On Row 3 it says to chain 2 at the end, then on row 4 to chain 1 at the beginning? Then are the next SC, HDC in one stitch, 2 dc in next 3, then HDC and SC in one stitch? and continue that way. I am thinking that with the “,” after each stitch it means two different stitches or is it all in the same stitch?
