Can’t resist a cute cactus! Especially when it’s in the form of a crochet hat and worn on my daughters head 🙂 All things cactus are very trendy right now. I recently purchased an adorable cactus crochet hook and it inspired me to crochet a cactus hat! The one shown is child size but I’m posting sizing info below so you can adjust and make this had bigger or smaller.
Materials:
– Bernat Super Value yarn in Lush Green (main hat), Deep Sea Green (the prickles), Pumpkin (the brim/earflaps), and Magenta (flower). Shop all colors HERE at Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook. Purchase the Cactus Crochet Hook from The Clay Bean Co Facebook Page.
– Tapestry needle
The main part of the hat (the green cactus) is worked in a long strip and then stitched together to created a tube. My strip is 18 inches in length and fits around my 4.5 year old daughters head (with room to grow). The length of your strip will depend on the person you are making it for. The sizing chart is below!
Hat Sizing (the length of your main hat strip):
Newborn: 12 inches
3-6 Months: 13-14 inches
6-9 Months: 15 inches
9-12 Months: 15.5 inches
12-18 Months: 16 inches
18-24 Months: 17 inches
Preschooler: 17-18 inches
Child: 18-19 inches
Teen: 19-20
Adult: 21-22 inches
You can also make the hat taller or shorter by adding or subtracting a few chains from your starting chain and/or adding rows to the bottom rounds (the orange part).
Cactus Hat Pattern:
With Lush Green Yarn
Chain 36, HDC in 3rd chain from hook and rest of the way down, chain 2, turn
Row 2-36 (or more or less rows to obtain length): HDC in back loops only of each stitch, chain 2, turn. (34 HDC)
Fasten off laving long tail
Sew together edges to make a tube. Work tapestry needle under the tops of the HDC stitches.
Now you are going to want to stitch up top of hat so it cinches together. Continuing with your tapestry needle and long yarn tail, weave needle under top of edge and then pull tight when you get all the way around. Video below should help!
Join green yarn to bottom edge (anywhere), SC evenly along bottom edge all the way around (approx 58 stitches for the child size hat). Number of stitches doesn’t really matter. Just try to stitch around as evenly as possible.
Change to orange yarn, SC in each stitch around for a total of 3 rows, don’t fasten off, start on earflaps as written below.
Earflap Pattern:
Chain 1, SC in next 10, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC across (8 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC across ( 6 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC across (4 SC)
Row 8: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends
Second earflap placement: Fold hat in half leaving slightly more stitches in the front of the hat than the back. Place the second earflap to line up with the first earflap (Refer to earflap placement from the pictures available at the end of my puppy hat pattern).
Join yarn, chain 1, SC in next 10, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC across (8 SC)
Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC across ( 6 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC across (4 SC)
Row 8: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC decrease, and continue to SC around hat and earflaps and fasten off when you get the entire way around and weave in ends.
Chain 1, SC in next 12, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC across (8 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC across ( 6 SC)
Row 8: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC across (4 SC)
Row 10: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 11: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends
Second earflap placement: Fold hat in half leaving slightly more stitches in the front of the hat than the back. Place the second earflap to line up with the first earflap (Refer to earflap placement from the pictures available at the end of my puppy hat pattern).
Row 5: SC across (8 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC across ( 6 SC)
Row 8: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 9: SC across (4 SC)
Row 10: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn
Row 11: SC decrease, and continue to SC around hat and earflaps and fasten off when you get the entire way around and weave in ends.
Braided Tails:
Cut six 18 inch strands of orange yarn.
Pass halfway through last space in earflap. You should now have 12 strands to braid with.
Make knot and braid approx 5.5 inches long, knot, trim ends.
Flower pattern:
With pink yarn
Magic Ring, chain 2 in ring, make 6 DC in ring, pull tight, join to first DC, chain 3.
Cut about a 6 inch strand of dark green yarn. Fold in half and pass through any random stitch (prickles should be placed sporadically). Loop ends through and trim!
