Crochet Llama Hat

Earlier this week I posted a cute and fuzzy Crochet Monster Blanket using the new Bernat Pipsqueak Stripes yarn. I had a little bit left over and loved the turquoise part of the color “playdate” so I used it to make a Llama Hat! I only had enough for 0-3month size so yuou may want to stick with the original Bernat Pipsqueak yarn that comes in solid shades (shop all colors HERE). And if Pipsqueak yarn is just too intimidating for you, you can always make this hat in any worsted weight yarn!

Materials:
– Bernat Pipsqueak Yarn (1 skein of the solid color). Shop all colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Caron Simply Soft yarn in White and Black. Shop HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook for the hat
– Size G Crochet Hook for the facial features
– Tapestry Needle

Note: For bigger sizes, you will want to use an H hook for the facial features and I also suggest a bulkier yarn like Bernat Super Value.

Tips for working with Pipsqueak yarn: Keep your stitches loose and run your fingers along the previous stitches to figure out where the next will go. You can actually pretty easily feel for where the tops of each stitch are. You could actually pop your finger through a space under the stitch. So the place where you finger pops through is where you make your next stitch! Easy!

Hat Pattern:

Size: 0-3 Months
Magic ring, 11 DC in magic ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join, chain 2 (22 DC)
Round 3: 2 DC in first, DC in next, repeat around, join, chain 2 (33 DC)
Round 4: 2 DC in first, DC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
Round 5-10: DC in each around, join, chain 2 (44 DC)
do not fasten off, begin on earflap as written below
Size: 3-6 Months
Magic ring, 11 DC in magic ring, join to first DC, chain 2

Braided Tails:
With white yarn
Cut eight 1 yard strands of each color. Pass strands half-way through tip of earflap. You should now have 16 strands to braid with. Make knot and braid approx 5.5 inches long, knot, trim ends.

Llama Eye (make 2):
with white yarn
magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 4: 2 SC in first sttich, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 5: SC in first 7 stitches, 2 HDC in next 2, 2 DC in next 6, 2 HDC in next 2, SC in remaining stitches, join, chain 1
Fasten off leaving long tail

Use a strand of black yarn and your tapestry needle to stitch on eyelashes. I always thought THIS tutorial was helpful when trying to stitch on eyelashes. 

Llama Nose:
with white yarn
chain 6, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain making 2 SC in the last chain, now working on other side of chain, SC all the way down making 2 SC in last chain, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (24 SC)
Round 4: SC in first 4, 2 HDC in next, 2 DC in next, 2 HDC in next, SC in next 4, 2  SC in next 3, SC in next 8, 2 SC in last 3, join, fasten off leaving long tail.
Use a strand of black yarn and your tapestry needle to stitch on nose and smile.

Llama Ear (make 2):
starting with white yarn

Chain 5, SC in 2nd ch from hook and along the rest of the chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 4-6: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 7: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 8: SC in each stitch across (4 SC)
Row 9: Make two SC decreases
Row 10: Make one SC decrease, 
Now switch to pipsqueak yarn, chain 1 and continue to SC around entire ear, join
Optional: you can slip stitch with pipsqueak yarn along the back side of the ear to make it furry as well. Or you can leave it as is. OR you can make a second ear with just pipsqueak yarn and stitch the two together.
Stitch on all face embellishments by working your tapestry needle under the top of stitches on the edges of your eyes/nose.
So furry and fuzzy!!

  2. I actually use pipsqueak yarn with your polar bear hat pattern, so if people wanted to use a larger hook for the hat, that pattern is perfect to use instead! That’s what I plan to do. 🙂

    • I’m having a problem with the earflaps, the way it starts for the first one, it’s at the back of the hat. Plus I’m not sure where to start the second flap at. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  20. The sizing of these patterns are all off. I made the 9-12 month one and it was way too large, more like an adult size.

    • I agree with the sizing bring way off. I was 2/3 finished with the adult size and it was huge! I pulled it all out and am trying with a smaller hook.
