Crochet Gingerbread Towel Topper

November 15, 2018

I just can’t seem to stop crocheting gingerbread men! I saw this adorable dish towel on Amazon and immediately had to get it! I thought it would be perfect hanging in the kitchen for the holidays. Then I thought instead of making a standard crochet towel topper I would add a few embellishments to make it a gingerbread towel topper! Of course you could leave off the gingerbread head and arms and use this pattern as a standard towel topper.

Materials:
– Adorable Christmas Dish Towel. Find it HERE (amazon affiliate)
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Bernat Super Value Yarn in Topaz and White
– 2 small red buttons
– two 12mm safety eyes
– 1 inch button of any color (mine is green in the photos below) to secure the towel topper flap over oven handle.

Towel Topper:
Make 18 “chain” stitches with your tapestry needle across the top of the towel. Use video below as guidance! Fasten off and weave in ends.

Now with your crochet hook
Join same color yarn under the first chain.
Chain 2 and make a DC in each of the chains, chain 2, turn (18 DC)
Row 2: DC Decrease, DC in the next 14 stitches, DC Decrease over last two, chain 2, turn (16 DC)
Row 3: DC in each stitch across, chain 2, turn (16 DC)
Row 4: DC Decrease, DC in the next 12 stitches, DC Decrease over last two, chain 2, turn (14 DC)
Row 5: DC Decrease, DC in the next 10 stitches, DC Decrease over last two, chain 2, turn (12 DC)
Row 6: DC Decrease, DC in the next 8 stitches, DC Decrease over last two, chain 2, turn (10 DC)
Row 7: DC Decrease, DC in the next 6 stitches, DC Decrease over last two, chain 2, turn (8 DC)
Row 8-13: DC in each stitch across, chain 2, turn (8 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Leave towel topper like this or continue to make a cute character face like this gingerbread man!

Gingerbread Man Head:
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 10 DC in ring, join to first DC, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (20 DC)
Round 3: 2 DC in each stitch around, join, (40 DC)

fasten off leaving long tail to sew head onto towel topper.
Slip stitch around edges with white yarn.

Add two safety eyes.
Stitch on a white smile and add two red buttons for cheeks.

Gingerbread hands:
Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 6 DC in ring, do not join. Pull tight – you should now have a half circle.
On the straight edge of the circle make 6 DC across.
Fasten off leaving long tail
Slip stitch around half circle of hand with white yarn.

Stitch head onto flap of towel topper. Be sure to leave a little space behind the head so you can secure your button between two of the DC stitches. Your green button (or whatever color you use) should be placed at the bottom of the crochet part of the towel topper.

Don’t forget to stitch on the cute little hands!

Happy Holiday Baking!

    Hi Sarah,

Love your pattern, but shouldn’t rounds 2 and 3 be double crochets and not single?

Hello! I bought some flour sack towels to use instead of the waffle towels and was wondering if you could tell me how wide your towel is (once folded). Thank you!

Sooo cute, love it. Is there a way to make it where the towel is detachable for washing?

    Thanks!

    Hi
Is there a pic of how the green button attaches? I don’t quite get it?

I am not seeing how the green button fastens onto the gingerbread head? Do you make 2 of the heads so that the button goes between the layers? I’m sorry I’m not always the best at understanding patterns. Thanks for all of your sweet patterns.
