Crochet Triangle Blanket

March 5, 2019

Pretty patterns with simple stitches! That basically sums up this fun Crochet Triangle Blanket! Choose any 5 colors in Caron Simply Soft (although don’t you love the southwestern feel of the color combo I chose?!) and create a seemingly complicated triangle patterned blanket that is actually so easy you really don’t need to follow a pattern! Of course I am here to give you all the details and guide you through the making of this masterpiece!

Materials:
– 2 skeins each of Caron Simply Soft in:
Charcoal Heather
Blue Mint
Pumpkin
White
Gold
Shop all colors HERE on Yarnspirations.com!

– Size G Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

Let’s start with the basics. This blanket is made up of double crochet stitches. I have zoomed in on a single triangle to show you that it is made up 5 rows starting from the bottom you will have 9 double crochet stitches, the next row 7, then 5, then 3, then 1 to make your triangle. As you carry your yarn through you will use color changes to create each triangle. So one triangle will start from the bottom up (9 DC, 7 DC, 5 DC, 3 DC, 1 DC) and the one next to it will be upside down (1 DC, 7 DC, 5, 3 DC, 1 DC). The edges will be half triangles. It will all make sense when you get through the first 5 rows!

You will need to carry your yarn through your project!

Pattern:
starting with charcoal color yarn (you will be working with charcoal and blue for the first 5 rows)
Chain 143,
Row 1: DC in 3rd chain from hook and in next 4, DC in next with Blue yarn, *DC in next 9 with charcoal, DC in next with Blue, repeat from * 12 more times, make 5 DC with charcoal in the last 5 chains, chain 2, turn (chain 2 does not count as a stitch)
Row 2: DC in first 4 with charcoal, DC in next 3 with blue, *DC in next 7 with charcoal, DC in next 3 with blue, repeat from * until you get to the last 4 stitches. DC in last 4 with charcoal, chain 2, turn
Row 3: DC in the first 3 with charcoal, DC in the next 5 with blue, *DC in the next 5 with charcoal, DC in the next 5 with blue, repeat from * until you get to the last 3 stitches. DC in last 3 with charcoal, chain 2, turn
Row 4: DC in the first 2 with charcoal, DC in the next 7 with blue, * DC in the next 3 with charcoal, DC in the next 7 with blue, repeat from * until you get to the last 2 stitches. DC in last 2 with charcoal, chain 2, turn
Row 5: DC in the first stitch with charcoal, DC in the next 9 with blue, * DC in the next stitch with charcoal, DC in the next 9 with blue, repeat from * until you get to the last stitch. DC in last stitch with charcoal, break both color yarns

Join in orange yarn and chain 2 (you will now be working with orange and white)
Row 6: DC in first with orange, DC in next 9 with white, * DC in next stitch with orange, DC in next 9 with white, repeat from* unti l you get to the last stitch. DC in last stitch with orange, chain 2, turn
Row 7: DC in the first 2 with orange, DC in the next 7 with white, * DC in the next 3 with orange, DC in the next 7 with white, repeat from * until you get to the last 2 stitches. DC in last 2 with orange, chain 2, turn
Row 8: DC in the first 3 with orange, DC in the next 5 with white, *DC in the next 5 with orange, DC in the next 5 with white, repeat from * until you get to the last 3 stitches. DC in last 3 with orange, chain 2, turn
Row 9: DC in first 4 with orange, DC in next 3 with white, *DC in next 7 with orange, DC in next 3 with white, repeat from * until you get to the last 4 stitches. DC in last 4 with orange, chain 2, turn
Row 10: DC in first 5 with orange, DC in next with white, *DC in next 9 with orange, DC in next with white, repeat from * 12 more times, make 5 DC with orange in the last 5 chains, break yarn.
Use yellow and charcoal for the next 5 rows!
Repeat rows 1-5 with yellow and charcoal (Row 1 will start with DC in the first 5 because you aren’t on your starting chain anymore)
Repeat rows 6-10with blue and orange
continue for as many rows as you’d like!

My finished blanket is 35 x35 inches. You may want to make yours longer!

Add tassels to the 4 corners if desired!

Started this project two years ago! Feels good to finish an old work-in-progress!

I can’t STAND carrying the yarn through the work, especially when using dark colors. The colors being carried ARE noticeable and its not pretty. I go to the trouble of using bobbins to prevent that. #rantover

I LOVE carrying the yarn–makes everything so simple. No winding bobbins and then running out of yarn. Not a million ends to weave in. No muss, no fuss. With this kind of pattern, it doesn’t matter if the yarns show through–it just looks like a woven effect and ADDS to the appearance. It’s not an article of clothing, after all.

I have carried the yarn and it doesn’t show through, I give it a little tug before I start the next color and it is fine!

I love it! But I have to ask, does it have to be 5 colors, or is there a way to make it in less colors?

I am using 4 and doing a rotating color scheme. So blue/purple start, purple being the upright triangle. Carry the second color to the next sequence and do purple/green, then green/orange, orange/blue. Then starts all over with blue/purple. The carry over color will make a hourglass shape with the previous row and matching color. I am going for a sort of reverse harlequin pattern. (Hope I am explaining that so it makes sense….) I got 4 skeins each color as I am making it a little wider with 183 stitches.

How did you figure the math to make it wider? Will your be more of an adult size, personal blanket, like doe the couch?

I made this using the same color on both up and lower triangle which gave it a harlequin pattern. Really like this pattern. Thank you for sharing it.

You can make it in 10 colors if you want or 2 colors. It doesn’t matter. This person just happened to use 5 colors.

I want to make a wider blanket. How many chain stitches would I add to increase the size? Would I add stitches in multiples of 9 to the desired width?
    Thank you!

I have tried and tried but my triangles are not matching up in the first 5 rows? Is there any helpful hints? I have been keeping my counts but it seems to be off. This blanket is so beautiful and I am really looking forward to making it but can’t get the triangles to match up.

Hey- I appreciated your video, but I’ve never done a project that carries two colors through like that. Would you be willing to make more tutorial videos for the beginner crocheters? Specifically- starting from the very beginning- how do you do two colors together? Or should I just YouTube instructional videos for that?

Love the pattern and am working a sample right now. But I have a question on the edges- mine have a bump w/ the turning chains and how do you carry the ‘spare’ around the turn?

If you give the yarn a tug it will push the stitches together and cover up underneath yarn. Hope this helps.

This is a very interesting pattern. How could I enlarge this to be adult size, such as to use on the couch. Is there a formula for the beginning chain like multiple of X plus X or similar.

Hi! I’m a long time crocheter, and a brand new designer of crochet patterns. I came by this pattern by way of another website, allfreecrochet.com. It’s a beautiful pattern, by the way.

I wanted to ask you… do you know that this pattern is listed on that website, with a link to your pattern here? Are they allowed to post your pattern this way?

I ask, because I don’t support websites that participate in content theft, and I’m trying to determine if allfreecrochet.com is one of those websites that participate in content theft. I also wanted to inform you, incase you didn’t know what they were doing.

I saw that right at the beginning there was an error in the directions for the upside down triangle ((1dc 7dc 3dc 1dc) this will not make a triangle right side up or upside down)
