Crochet Icing on the Cupcake Hat

Want to add a little icing to a cupcake hat?! I’ve got a quick little pattern here for you! I debuted this technique this past Saturday in an online Michaels Craft Store Virtual Classroom. If you missed it, don’t worry, you can watch the playback video HERE!

As promised, I am posting the pattern for the icing below. The crochet icing works up in just a few rounds and looks kinda like an octopus when laid flat but when you set it onto of the hat, it looks like icing drippings!

I am using Caron Swirl Cakes for the Crochet Cozy Bobbles Hat and then I created the pom-pom and icing with a deconstructed ball of Caron Chunky Cakes in color Trifle. You can shop Caron Cake Yarn HERE on Michaels.com!

Crocheting Icing Pattern:
Materials:
– Size H Hook (or larger)
– Caron Chunky Cakes (or any bulky or worsted weight yarn would work too)

Magic Ring, chain 2 and make 12 DC in ring, join, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join (24 DC)

Now lets make the drips

chain 6, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch along round 2 and join with slip stitch

chain 5, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch to join, 

chain 4, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 7, DC in 3d chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 5, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 4, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 6, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 4, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 5, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 2, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 5, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

chain 4, DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in remaining chains, skip a stitch, slip stitch

Fasten off leaving long tail.
