Crochet Baby Chick Pillow

This Crochet Baby Chick Pillow is my 3rd Spring/Easter pillow design! I start with a simple graphgan pixel graph where you use single crochet stitches to create the yellow baby chicken body with a turquoise background. Then add the embellishemts and a solid back panel to complete the pillow. One of my Facebook readers had a great idea… instead of making a pillow, you could use the characters squares (and solid squares) and put them together to make a blanket! Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Colors:
Aruba Sea
Daffodil
Pale Yellow (back panel)
White for the egg shell
Saffron and Pumpkin (for beak and head feathers)

– A bit of black yarn or embroidery thread for eyes
– Size H Crochet Hook

– 14 x 14 Poly-fil Premier Pillow Insert

Finished size is approximately 15 x 15 inches

You will crochet one of these panels using the pixel graph and any color you’d like for the background (I chose Turquoise blue) and yellow for the baby chick. Make sure you have a square when you are finished. I had to add on an extra 5 rows to mine (for a total of 50 rows).

Make a starting chain of 46 with turquoise color, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, you should have a total of 45 SC stitches. This is the bottom row of your pixel graph. One square is equal to one Single Crochet stitch. Follow the graph and SC in rows to make the square with the baby chick. You can carry your yarn through or use two balls of the turquoise to crochet on either side of the yellow body.

Crochet a second SC panel that is the same size (about 15×15 inch square) without the baby chick body graph. Just a solid color. I used pale yellow for the backside of my pillow.

Egg Shell Pattern:
with white yarn
Chain 25, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2: 2 SC in first stitch, SC until last stitch, 2 SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 4: 2 SC in first, SC until last stitch, 2 SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 6: 2 SC in first, SC until last stitch, 2 SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 7: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 8: 2 SC in first, SC until last stitch, 2 SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 9-12: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
First triangle (cracked shell piece)
SC in first 10, leave rest of stitches unworked, chain 1, turn,
SC Decrease, SC in next 6, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn,
SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
SC Decrease, SC in next 4, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
SC Decrease, SC in next 2, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
SC Decrease twice, fasten off
Second triangle (middle cracked shell piece)
Re-attach yarn in stitch next to first triangle
SC in 12 stitches (leave remaining stitches unworked), chain 1, turn
SC Decrease, SC in next 8, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn

SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn

Third triangle (last cracked shell piece)
Re-attach yarn next to middle shell piece
SC in remaining 10 stitches, chain 1, turn,
SC Decrease, SC in next 6, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn,
SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
SC Decrease, SC in next 4, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
SC Decrease, SC in next 2, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
SC Decrease twice, fasten off

Beak:
with orange yarn
Chain 5, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in next, TC in last, fasten off leaving long tail.

Hair Feathers:
with darker orange yarn
Chain 10, 5 HDC in 3rd chain from hook, join to next stitch, skip a stitch, 5 DC in next, join to next, skip a stitch, 5 HDC in next, join to last stitch. Fasten off leaving long tail.

Don’t forget to stitch on little eyes with black yarn!

Place the two square panels together and single crochet the edges together. Insert pillow form before you stitch completely closed.
