Crochet Frankie Blankie

I’m diving right into Fall and Halloween crochet projects! This Frankenstein Crochet Blanket, which I nicknamed “The Frankie Blankie” is small and easy to gift but you can also double the pattern to make it bigger! Simple single crochet stitches are used for most of the main blanket and also for the embellishments. For the “hair” I created a chevron zig-zag pattern that I will walk you through in the pattern below and also a video tutorial! Feel free to add on additional facial features and you can even make the blanket reversible by adding a face to the backside as well!

For the yarn, I used Red Heart Comfort in color melon because I had a lot leftover from my Grinch Pillow. It took less than one ball for this entire blanket! But if you are having trouble finding this yarn, you can easily substitute it with Red Heart Super Saver in color Spring Green. You will need two skeins.

Materials:
– Red Heart Comfort in color melon or Red Heart Super Saver in color Spring Green.
– Red Heart Super Saver in Black, Light Gray, Pumpkin Orange, and White.

– Tapestry Needle

Finished Size: 26 inches wide by 30 inches tall

Blanket:

With green yarn

Chain 86, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-85: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (85 SC)
Row 86: SC in first 3, *HDC in next 2, DC in next 2, TC, DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC in next 5, repeat from * all the way down row, ending with a SC in last 3, chain 1, turn
Row 87: SC, SC Decrease, *HDC in next 2, DC in next 2, 3 DC in next, DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC, SC Decrease over 3 stitches, SC, repeat from * but ending with a SC Decrease and then a SC in last, chain 1, turn
Row 88: SC, SC Decrease, SC in next 4, 3 SC, SC in next 5, *SC Decrease, SC in next 6, 3 SC, SC in next 5, repeat from * until last seven stitches. Make a SC in 4 stitches, SC Decrease, and SC in last. (simplify this row in your mind: make 3 SC in all the peaks, SC Decrease in all the valleys, one SC in ever stitch in-between)

Change to black yarn, chain 1 turn

Row 89: (Basically the same as row 88 but with black yarn – you will have one extra stitch coming down your peaks), SC, SC Decrease, SC in next 4, 3 SC, SC in next 6, *SC Decrease, SC in next 6, 3 SC, SC in next 6, repeat from * until last seven stitches. Make a SC in 4 stitches, SC Decrease, and SC in last.
Row 90: SC in first 14 stitches, SC Decrease over 3 stitches, *SC in next 13, SC Decrease over 3 stitches, repeat from * make a SC in last stitch (end with 14 SC stitches just like you started with), chain 2, turn
Row 91: DC in first 4, HDC, *SC in next 5, HDC, DC in next 2, TC in next 3, DC in next 2, HDC, repeat from * make a HDC and DC in last 4 stitches, chain 1, turn
Row 92-111: SC in each stitch across, chain , turn
Fasten off weave in ends.

Frankenstein Hair OPTION #2: Spike Stitch
And easier way to create Frankenstein looking hair is to make one row of spike stitchings at differing levels for just one row when you change to black yarn. This is just a regular single crochet stitch but bring your hook down to work in the row(s) below the current working row.

Eyes (make 2):
with white
magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 7: 2 SC in first, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (50 SC)
Round 8: SC in each stitch around, fasten off leaving long tail

With orange
magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (30 SC)

With black
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 12 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (12 SC)

Stitch black eye onto orange (with your tapestry needle, add a little white yarn for an “eye sparkle”)
Then stitch on orange eye to white eye.
Lastly, stitch completed layered eye onto blanket between rows 46-66

Tip: when sewing the pieces onto your blanket, work tapestry needle in-between the blanket stitches so the back doesn’t look messy.

Neck Bolts (make 2):
with gray yarn
chain 13, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-7: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (12 SC)
fasten off yarn at the end of row 7 and re- attach yarn 4^th stitch in from right edge.
Row 8: SC in next 6, leave remaining 3 unworked (you should now have 3 extra stitches on either end), chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 9-12: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Fasten off after row 12 and stitch neck bolts onto either side of blanket towards the bottom.

Mouth/Smile:
with black yarn
Chain 35, fasten off and stitch onto blanket under eyes

Optional: You could also surface slip stitch a smile on!

Frankenstein Stitches:
with gray yarn
Surface Slip Stitch to create the look of stitches above the left or right eye. You could make more than one! I have a tutorial on surface slip stitching HERE on my YouTube Channel.
