Crochet Bat Basket

It’s spooky season and this crochet bat basket will fit those king size candies at treats! Most of this project is made with a double strand of yarn. This means that you will hold two strands of worsted weight yarn together for a sturdy basket that is quick and easy to make!

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in black and a bit of white for the eyes.

– Size J hook for the basket and wings
– Size H hook for the ears and eyes
– Tapestry needle
– 15mm black safety eyes

Basket itself measures about 5×5 inches. With wings and ears attached, it is 15 inches wide by 6.5 inches tall.

Basket:
Using two strands of black yarn together and a size J hook
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat aroud, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 7: in back loops only, SC in each stitch aroumd, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
continue to work in both loops for rest of pattern
Round 8-11: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 12: SC Decrease, SC in next 6, repeat around, join, chain 1 (35 SC)
Round 13-19: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (35 SC)
Round 20: Reverse SC (crab stitch) around edge, fasten off, weave in ends.

Wings (make 2):
Using a double strand of yarn and size J hook
Chain 11, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (10 SC)
Row 2: SC in first 8 SC, leave the rest of the stitches unworked, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (8 SC)
Row 4: SC in first 6 stitches, leave the rest of the stitches unworked, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 5: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 6: SC in first 4 stitches, leave the rest of the stitches unworked, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 7: SC in each stitch, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
SC around the back two edges of wings, fasten off.
Note: for the right wing, you may want to fasten off the yarn and re-attachd at the oposite end before you SC around the back two edges so your stitches are facing the correct way.

Stitch wings onto sides of basket so they are sticking outward.

Ears (make 2):
Using a single strand of black yarn and size H hook
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (6 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 5, repeat around, join, chain 1 (14 SC)
Round 7: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 6, repeat around, join, (16 SC)
Fasten off, leave long tail.

Stitch ears onto inside rim of basket. Place them together in the front of basket.

Eyes (make 2):
with single strand of white yarn and size H hook
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in first two, 2 HDC in next two, 2 DC in next two, 2 HDC in next two, 2 SC in last two, join, fasten off leaving long tail.
Place safety eye in bottom corner of eye, stitch eyes together onto the front of the basket.
