Koala Crochet Square

August 1, 2023

Grab that gray yarn because we are about to stitch up the 8th square in our Animal Square CAL! This cute Koala fits right in with the other adorable animals. The little flower is optional but adds a sweet pop of color! Just like the other squares, this is very easy and you can always customize these animals to your liking.

If you aren’t familiar with my Animal Square CAL you can read all about it HERE.

Each month (January through December of 2023) I will post a new Crochet Animal Square.  These are simple crochet squares that are embellished with adorable animal faces! These squares work up quickly and won’t take you more than an hour or two. This project is extremely beginner friendly and you can add more or less embellishments. Customize to your liking!

At the end of the year, I will be stitching these all together to make a blanket! But they could also be turned into a pillow(s), a scarf, or any other creative way you’d like to use them.

Keep in mind that I am making 2 of each square so I can place them back-to-back to make our finished blanket reversible.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in colors Dusty Gray (for the background/ears/feet), Light Gray (for the border/ears/feet) and Charcoal (for the nose). You will also need a bit of pink and purple for the flower (the same pink and purple from the pig and hippo!)
Shop Red Heart Super Saver Yarn HERE on Yarnspirations.com
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
– Safety eyes (12mm) optional

It has come to my attention that some of these grays are sold out on Yarnspirations.com. The Red Heart Store on Amazon has them available for purchases!

First let’s make the Square:
With dusty gray yarn
Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-23: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
now continue making a SC in the 3 sides (2 Chains in each corner)
join in light gray yarn, fasten off dusty gray, SC in each stitch all the way around 4 sides making 2 SC in each corner.

Fasten off weave in ends.

NOTE: Remember the backside of your square can be messy! We are going sandwich two squares together to make the blanket completely reversible.

Koala Ear (make 2):
Starting with light gray
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 8 DC in ring, pull tight but do not join, chain 2, turn
Row 2: DC in first, 2 DC in next, repeat around, join in dusty gray, chain 2, turn
Row 3: 2 DC in each stitch around, fasten off.

Stitch bottom edge of ears onto either side of the top of the square a pictured. See video for additional help placing and sewing on face embellishments.

Nose:
With charcoal yarn
Chain 5, SC in second chain from hook, SC in next two, 3 SC in last, now working on other side of chain, SC in each stitch across, join to first SC, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 2: SC in first 3, 2 SC in next 4, SC in last 3, join to first SC.
Fasten off leaving long tail.

Stitch nose onto middle of square. Place safety eyes (or crocheted eye) on either side of the top of the nose.

How about using my crochet cartoon eyes for these animals squares?! The smaller version would work great for most of them! GET THE FREE CARTOON EYES PATTERN HERE. They are a great safety eye alternative.

Feet (make 2):
Starting with light gray
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join in dusty gray, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in first 4, 2 SC in remaining 6 stitches, join, fasten off.

Stitch feet onto either side of the bottom of the square, angled outward.
Take a strand of charcoal yarn and your tapestry needle, weave yarn around top edge of feet in 3 different places to make the cute little claws.

Flower (optional):
starting with pink yarn
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join in purple yarn,
Round 2: Chain 2 + 2 DC + Chain 2 all in one stitch, slip stitch over to the next stitch and repeat Chain 2 + 2 DC + Chain 2 (you will slip stitch that last chain two back to same stitch). You should have 6 petals!
Fasten off and stitch flower onto edge of the right ear.
