Peace Sign Crochet Square

Peace Out Single Digits! This girl is 10! It’s my daughter Zoe’s 10th birthday today and if you’ve been following my blog since the beginning, you will remember when she was a newborn!

She’s been my little crochet model since day 1 and I am so thankful that she still loves to be in front of the camera and cheers me on with every project idea. She hasn’t had the urge to learn to crochet herself but I will give it more time. Right now she is into theater, musical dance, skin care, organizing, and shopping (especially at the craft store!).

She wanted a little room refresh for her birthday so I think I will make this square into a larger blanket with other groovy symbols. Something similar to my Daisy Aghan (see it here) but using the peace sign, a heart, and the daisy flower. I will be sure to post more about this project as I work on it!

I love these pastel colors from the Red Heart With Love line of yarn. They are going to be perfect in her room and the yarn is super soft!

Materials:
– Red Heart with Love in colors Blush (purple) and Minty.

– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

Finished Size: Approximately 6.5 x 6.5 inches

Grit Stitch Square:
with minty yarn
Chain 25, SC in third chain from hook, *skip one chain, 2 SC in next, repeat from * until the end of your chain except you will need to make only one SC in the last chain, Chain 1, Turn. 
Row 2-21: SC in first stitch, *skip one stitch, make 2 SC in next, repeat from * until the end of your row EXCEPT you will need to make only one SC in the last stitch, chain 1, turn. 
After row 21, continue to SC around entire square for a more finished edge, making 3 SC in each corner.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
NOTE: you could absolutely make a a basic SC square instead of using the grit stitch.

Peace Sign Circle:
with purple yarn
Chain 40, join to first chain to create a circle, chain 2
Round 2: 2 DC in first stitch, DC in next, repeat around, join, fasten off leaving long tail.

Peace Sign Middle Line:
with purple yarn
Chain 16, DC in 4th chain from hook, DC in the remaining chains, fasten off leaving long tail.

Peace Sign Short Lines (Make 2):
with purple yarn
Chain 8, DC in 4th chain from hook, DC in the remaining chains, fasten off leaving long tail.

Attaching your peace sign pieces to the square:
Start by stitching on the outer edge of your circle to the square with your tapestry needle. Leave the inner circle for now. You will want to be able to tuck the other pieces under it.

Stitch down the main vertical line and tuck both ends in the top and bottom of circle as you stitch it down.

Now add the two smaller lines. The straighter edge to the piece should butt up against the middle line. Tuck the other side under the circle.

Now you can go over the inner part of the circle and make sure it is all stitched down.

I love that the meaning of the peace sign conveys a desire for peace and harmony, as well as non-violence and goodwill.
