Fox Crochet Square

Now we have NINE! This fantastic fox is the ninth square in our animal square crochet-along! This woodland critter would be cute as a stand alone project as well. Especially as we head into the Fall season!

Each month (January through December of 2023) I will post a new Crochet Animal Square.  These are simple crochet squares that are embellished with adorable animal faces! These squares work up quickly and won’t take you more than an hour or two. This project is extremely beginner friendly and you can add more or less embellishments. Customize to your liking!

At the end of the year, I will be stitching these all together to make a blanket! But they could also be turned into a pillow(s), a scarf, or any other creative way you’d like to use them. 

Keep in mind that I am making 2 of each square so I can place them back-to-back to make our finished blanket reversible.

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Carrot orange, White, and Black.

– Size H Crochet Hook
– Two 12 or 15mm black safety eyes
– Tapestry Needle

First let’s make the Square:
With carrot orange yarn
Chain 21, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-23: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
now continue making a SC in the 3 sides (2 Chains in each corner)
join in light black yarn, fasten off orange, SC in each stitch all the way around 4 sides making 2 SC in each corner.

Eye Patch:
with white yarn
Chain 19, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (18 SC)
Row 3: SC Decrease, SC in next 14, SC Decrease over last two, chain 1, turn
Row 4: SC in first 8 stitches, leave the rest unworked, chain 1, turn
Row 5: SC Decrease, SC in next 4, SC Decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 6: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 7: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, SC Decrease, chain 1, turn 
Row 8: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 9, SC Decrease twice, fasten off.

Join yarn in on row 4 in the middle stitch where the remaining 8 have been unworked.
SC in last 8 stitches, chain 1, turn
Repeat Rows 5-9, fasten off leaving long tail.
Attach safety eyes 3-4 rows down from top on each side of eye patches.

Nose:
with black yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 2 SC + 2 HDC + 2 SC + 2 HDC, join to first SC, fasten off leaving long tail.

Attach nose to middle of eye patch.
Stitch eye patch to square about 5 rows up from bottom.

Ears (make 2):
with orange yarn
chain 5, SC in second chain from hook, HDC in next, DC in last two, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first 3, 2 SC in next, SC in last 4, chain 1, turn
Row 3: SC in first 3, 2 SC in next 3, SC in last 3, fasten off

Stitch ears onto upper corners of square

Tail:
starting with orange yarn
Chain 5, SC in second chain from hook and remaining 3 chains, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, 2 SC in last, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 4-5: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 6: attach white yarn, SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 7: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, SC Decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 8: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 9: SC Decrease twice, chain 1, turn
Row 10: SC Decrease, fasten off
optional: SC around edges that are white in white yarn, and the orange edges in orange yarn to make the tail look finished and nice.
Stitch tail onto bottom right corner of square.
