Cute Crochet Camel Pattern

This crochet camel has been on my to do list for over a year and it was finally time to get this cutie on my hook and the pattern written down.

I’m using one of my favorite yarns: Bernat Super Value in color Topaz. Stock up on this color because I use it very frequently in all my gingerbread themed patterns!

I’ve learned recently that one-humped camels are actually called a Dromedary. And two-humped camels are called a Bactrian. The humps store fat and convert it to energy when needed. It’s been fun researching a bit about this awesome animals! I do plan on making a two hump crochet version as well!

Materials:
– Bernat Super Value in color Topaz
or Red Heart Super Saver in color Buff Beige would be another great option.
– Size H Crochet Hook
– 15mm Black Safety Eyes
– Polyfil Fiber Stuffing
– Tapestry Needle

Finished Size: 10 inches tall x 10 inches wide when sitting.

Camel Body:
Working top down and starting with the hump.
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (15 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (15 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (25 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first, SC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 7: SC in each stitch around, join chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 8: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (40 SC)
Round 9: SC in each stitch around, join, (40 SC)
Round 10: Chain 12, skip 4 stitches and join to the 5^th stitch in round with SC, SC in remaining stitches, join, chain 1 (36 SC + 12 chains = 48)
Round 11: SC in each of the chains and the 36 stitches (leave the skipped stitches unworked), join, chain 1 (48 SC)
Round 12-17: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (48 SC)
Round 18: SC Decrease, SC in next 6, repeat around, join, chain 1 (42 SC)
Round 19: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (42 SC)
Round 20: SC Decrease, SC in next 5, repeat around, join, chain 1 
Round 21: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 22: SC Decrease, SC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 23: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join chain 1
Round 24: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 25: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 26: SC Decrease until closed.
Fasten off weave in ends.

Stuff body with polyfil through neck hole.

Neck:
Attach yarn at any point along neck hole and chain 1.
Round 1: SC along the edge of the neck hole so you have 14 SC stitches around, join, chain 1
Round 2-7: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (14 SC) (feel free to make neck longer by crocheting a few more rounds)
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Stuff neck firmly with poly-fil and stitch head onto opening of neck.

Camel Head:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 9 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (27 SC)
Round 5-7: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (27 SC)
Round 8: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 9: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (18 SC)
Round 10: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (36 SC)
Round 11-17: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (36 SC)
Round 18: SC Decrease, SC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 19: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Add safety eyes between rounds 10 and 11 about 6 stitches apart.
Stuff with polyfil
Round 20: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 21; SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 22: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 23: SC Decrease until closed.
Fasten off weave in ends.

Ears (make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (6 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (9 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (12 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (15 SC)
Round 6-7: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 8: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Pinch bottom ends together and stitch onto head at round 18 behind the eyes.

Legs (make 4)
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (15 SC)
Round 3-6: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (15 SC)
Round 7: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 8-9: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 10: SC Decrease, SC in next 4, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 11-14: SC in each stitch around
Fasten off leaving long tail
Stuff with poly-fil
Stitch legs onto bottom of body. Two sticking out from the bottom front and two sticking out from the bottom back. The camel cannot stand on the legs.

Camel Tail:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 4 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2-5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (4 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in remaining stitches, join, chain 1 (5 SC)
Round 7-10: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Weave 3 strands of strand through bottom tail where your magic ring round is. Knot and trim.
Pinch top of tail closed and stitch onto back of camel body.

For Saddle and Reigns I used:
Red Heart Super Saver yarn in colors Jade, Real Teal, and Gold.

Tapestry Saddle for Camel Hump:
Starting with Jade yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (15 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around,  (15 SC)
Join in Teal yarn, chain 1
Round 4: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 5: *2 DC in first, HDC in next, SC in next 2, HDC in next, repeat from * around
Join in Gold yarn, chain 1
Round 6: *3 SC in first, SC in next 5, repeat from * around, join, fasten off and weave in ends.
Loop two strands of yarn in the middle SC of the 3 SC in each of the 4 corners. Knot and trim to create tiny tassels.

Saddle Reigns:
With Teal Yarn
Chain 25, fasten off leaving long tail.
Chain 35, fasten off leaving long tail. 
Wrap the chain 25 in a circle around the head at round 9. Join the two ends and weave in ends. You can secure it to the head if desired, so it won’t be removable.
Join one end of the chain 35 to one side of the chain 25 and the other end to the opposite side. The middle of the chain 35 can be attached to the tapestry on the hump of the camel.

The saddle really adds a nice finishing touch to our camel. You could include more details as well! Maybe a little nose/mouth? Tassels on the reigns? Small tuft of hair between the ears? Lots of ways to customize!
