As much as I would love for all my kids to take in interest in crochet, I’m just as happy cheering them on as they pursue their own passions. My son Chase is busy playing hockey on two teams, and my daughter Zoe has found her second home on the ice as a competitive figure skater. Between early-morning rink time, chilly bleachers, and sparkly skating dresses, I’ve officially entered my skate-mom era — and honestly, I kind of love it.
With the Winter Olympics on the horizon, we’ve also been having so much fun watching all the incredible ice sports together. That inspiration led me to design this sweet Crochet Ice Skate Appliqué — the very first winter-themed design in our Winter Activities Crochet-Along!
This skate measures about 6 × 6 inches, making it perfect for:
- blanket squares
- tote bags
- scarves
- sweaters
- wall hangings
- and more
And yes… the little heart is optional, but it adds just the right pop of love
Winter Activities Crochet-Along
This Ice Skate Appliqué is the first square in our Winter Activities Crochet-Along, a 12-month project filled with cozy winter themes, ice sports, and snowy fun. Each appliqué can stand on its own — or be turned into a full blanket as we go.
If you’re joining me for the Winter Activities Crochet-Along, this Ice Skate Appliqué is designed to be made as a matching pair — because every skate needs its mate!

Even if you’re not doing the CAL, this Ice Skate Appliqué works beautifully on its own for bags, clothing, décor, and gifts. So feel free to use it however you like!

– Heart Appliqué Pattern (optional – link above)
– Red Heart Super Saver Yarn
Dusty Gray (blade)
Black (heel & laces)
White (boot)

– Size H (5.0mm) Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle
Crochet Ice Skate Pattern:
Starting with gray yarn
chain 18, HDC in 3rd chain from hook, DC in next, chain 3 and join back down to same stitch as DC, SC Decrease, SC in next, SC Decrease, SC + chain 3 + DC+ chain 3 and slip stitch back down all in one stitch, SC Decrease, SC, SC Decrease, SC + chain 3 + DC+ chain 3 and slip stitch back down all in one stitch, SC in next, 3 SC in last,
now working on other side of starting chain
SC in each stitch along bottom of skate, work SC stitches up the front until you are at the top of the first HDC made, join in black yarn
Row 2: SC in top of DC stitch from previous round, chain 3, SC in top of chain 3, SC in top of DC, SC in top of chain 3, chain 3, SC in top of chain 3, SC in top of DC, SC in top of chain 3, chain 3, turn,
Row 3: SC in 3rd chain from hook, SC in next 3 SC, SC in next 3 chains, SC in next stitches, SC in next 3 chains, 2 SC in last stitch, fasten off
Join in white, chain 2, turn
Row 4: 2 SC in first, SC in remaining 14 stitches, chain 1, turn
Row 5-7: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 8: SC Decrease, SC in remaining stitches, chain 1 turn
Row 9: SC in each stitch until last two, SC Decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 10: SC Decrease, SC in remaining stitches, chain 1, turn
Row 11: SC in each stitch until last two, SC Decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 12: SC Decrease, SC in remaining stitches, chain 1, turn
Row 13: SC in each stitch until last two, SC Decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 14-19: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn
Row 20: SC Decrease, SC in remaining, fasten off, weave in ends.
Laces: With your tapestry needle, weave a long strand of yarn around the right edge of the skate and tie a bow at top. Loose ends can be knotted and hidden on the backside.
Optional Heart Appliqué
Add a little love to your skate by stitching on the small heart appliqué.

Sew it onto the side of the boot using matching yarn and a tapestry needle.
